INTRODUCTION INSTITUTE FOR PSYCHOTHERAPY AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (I.P.M.S.) is started with the noble mission of providing counselling and Psychotherapy courses at an affordable cost to the interested Indian inviduals. The institution (I.P.M.S.) is duly registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. Under the provisions to this Act this INSTITUTION IS RECOGNISED AS A SERVICE, TRAINING AND RESEARCH ORGANISATION. The Institute offers training and service to all persons regardless of caste, creed, religion and region. It maintains National character and serves on all India basis. Our students are from different parts of the country and abroad also. The Executive Committee consisting of committed people, is responsible for the general development and maintenance of the Institution. Its vision is to develop as a unique institution in the country. The Managing Committee constitutes experts from the fields of Psychology, Counselling, Education, Management, Medicine and Media Communication etc., vested with authority to confer Certificates, Diplomas and Professional Awards. FELT NEED Despite an increase in scientific productivity and material success, statistics shows that the rate of mental disturbances in terms of Suicide, Alcoholism, Drugs, Marital breakdown and the like are increasing at an alarming rate. It would seem that as the material comforts of life have increased, mental health is deteriorating. Mental health is achieved if man develops into full maturity according to the characteristics and laws of human nature. Mental illness consists in the failure of such development. According to the National Mental Health Programme document about 20-30 million Indians are in need of some form of mental health care. Every year 2,50,000 new cases are reported. But those figures do not include the thousands of others who may be suffering in silence without access to help. With proper care, atleast 60 percent of these mentally ill people can recover completely and atleast 70 percent can avoid chronic illness and disability. A large number of people can be helped merely by listening, providing care and equipping them with life skills to cope with stressful situations in life. A growing awareness of the shortage of professional guidance and the ineffectiveness of traditional treatment has led to a large number of persons to seek new avenues. In the next five years India needs atleast 1,00,000 counselors nationwide. Right now we don’t have even 3000 trained Counselors.

Counselling theory : There are 5 theory papers for the course. Lessons prepared by experienced professionals in the field will be supplied to candidates at regular intervals. Field Work : Candidates after going through the lessons one by one, need to practice skills and Counselling techniques of counseling wherever possible. Verbatim reports may be prepared and sent to the institution. They will be returned after correction by the staff for understanding and modification during the next sessions of counseling. Verbatim reports sharpen your counseling technique.

Contact Programme : The Contact Programme will help participants to get familiarized with the concepts and the subject matter. Those who had attended short workshops and courses also can review and reinforce the concepts and sharpen the skills. 2. Contact programme will be held at all contact programme centers with a short duration of 4 days. (Depending on No. of candidates).

3. Written Examination will be held at all contact programme centers (Depending on No. of candidates).

4. Participants are encouraged to attend the contact classes as they will immensely benefit from it.

5. When there is need, individual replies will be given.

6. Institute will be glad to provide counseling services to any of your counselors at reasonable charges.

7. Study materials will be sent for all chapters, which is sufficient from Examination point of view. However, our students are requested to go through the suggested readings, as it will provide them wider exposure.

8. There will be no communication made regarding remittance of Installments.

Students should remit it at the given due dates. Admission to the course is open to persons from all over India subject to the condition that disputes of any kind arising shall be resolved / decided only by Court, forum, Tribunal located in Nagaland and no other Court, Forum, Tribunal will have any jurisdiction to resolve / decide in respect of any dispute.

PSYCHOTHERAPY AS A CAREER

With the increasing pace of life, the ever-changing economy, complex relationships, the secular trend of growth & overwhelming pressures, the subjective discomfort in people has increased manifold. The general notion that the tolerance level of people is going down and so the stress levels are going up; stems from the fact that now a days the pace of change is very rapid. The world is becoming more and more accessible and thus, the affect of one culture on the other is intensifying. The pressures of ‘living’ itself are overwhelming. In the desperation to catch up with the pace of change around us, we also are changing rapidly. The definitions of achievement & success are changing. In an effort to earn a little extra, to be little more, to possess a little more we are compromising on the contentment of self. To cope up with ourselves, we then try & learn techniques to manage ourselves better to be able to do more. It seems like we are living a 48-hour day & still it feels less. Relaxation does not come to us by itself nowadays. We need to put in effort to relax. Some of us prefer yoga, some meditation, some medication & some the alternate therapies. Psychotherapy & counseling are one of these alternate ways to catch up with oneself – to see inwardly to reduce subjective distress & live life to its fullest. What is psychotherapy? As is experienced, ‘talking things over’ has helped all of us in finding solutions to our problems or reducing our tensions. Psychotherapy is also aimed at reducing our distress or anxiety and equipping us in finding our own solutions. Psychotherapy works on the assumption that pathology (physical & mental) is a result of a person’s perceptions, interpretations, beliefs & expectations about oneself as well as others. A child has stomachaches to skip school, a teenager has fever just before the examinations & a manager has a backache due to excessive work pressure. All these people are suffering from physical ailments but have psychological causes. We tend to ignore the causes and treat the symptoms to experience the same pain again & increase the dosage of medicine next time. Psychotherapy aims at –

1. Finding these causes & equipping people to handle stress & anxiety better; 2. Changing maladaptive patterns of behaviour; 3. Improving the quality of interpersonal relationships & interaction abilities; 4. Modifying false interpretations & beliefs; 5. Understanding & resolving conflicts arising from expectations from self as

well as others; 6. Reducing the damaging impact of emotional reactions and 7. Equipping in problem-solving & resolving crisis.

The list is exhaustive and can go on. In short, the objective of Psychotherapy is to remove / reduce distress & improve the quality of living. How does Psychotherapy work? Psychotherapy practiced by mental health professionals works by total acceptance of the client. It is a process, where the therapist introduces certain psychological interventions in the relationship – making this relationship different from other relationships. These interventions are deliberately planned and are introduced after ascertaining the readiness of the client. The therapist uses his knowledge of psychological theories to structure interventions. These interventions bring about change in the cognition, emotion and action of the client. The therapist facilitates the process of change in the desired direction. Who can be a Psychotherapist? The therapist is genuinely interested in people and wishes to alleviate distress or suffering. He is warm, receptive and most of all – non-judgmental. He is perceptive, having an ability of picking up the said as well as unsaid, and the impact of this on the client. He should be self-aware and in control of his emotions. He is trained in the theories of Psychology & Psychotherapy. He has an understanding of human behavior and is trained in using the techniques of Psychotherapy and Counseling. In what fields is Psychotherapy and Counselling applicable? Counselling is applicable in every field that deals with people. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, clergymen are all involved in counseling in some form or the other. The different kinds of therapies available are:-

Student Counselling :- Many students undergo crisis during their schooling or college years. The crisis could be in form of a behavioral or conduct problem (like aggressiveness), inability to cope in class or concentrate, academic backwardness or fluctuating performance in academics. Recognizing and working with the problems at this level can ensure healthy & optimal development of a child into a fully functional adult.

Career Counselling :- Today, teenagers are faced with increasing options of careers, family pressures, complex needs (achievement, job satisfaction, good salary, optional use of ones’ potential etc.), inability to commit and grow in one field and/or confusion in recognizing future trends of the market. This leads them into a never-ending search of what they wish to take up as a filed of study or what they want to become. Career counseling is working with people so that they can decide on the path of action that would suit them most in the future.

Parent Counselling :- In this parents are helped through any crisis pertaining to their children. Usually it is clubbed with Play Therapy to obtain maximum results. At times parents have to be helped through crisis is life – like raising a special child. Parent counseling is used to support them through this crisis and equip them with techniques of managing their child.

Vocational Guidance :- This refers to providing people with information about available resources that suits their personality and needs.

Play Therapy :- It is used with children who are facing problems at home or school and/or are manifesting disturbed behavior, conduct problems or academic backwardness. The conflicts in the child are recognized and resolved through the process of play. Usually this technique is used for children below the age of 12 years and people with borderline or low intelligence or pervasive developmental disorders.

Insight Oriented Individual Therapy :- This therapy involves intensive work with the client/patient in gaining insight and resolving ones’ conflict oneself. The therapist acts as a facilitator in the journey of self-discovery and/or alleviation of distress/symptoms in the client. The therapy is used from problems ranging from mild distress to major pathological problems.

Individual behaviour Therapy :- This aims at modifying maladaptive behaviours and dysfunctional cognitions. It also helps individual achieve competencies in which they may be lacking that lead to dissatisfaction – like assertiveness training for the individual to become more assertive.

Marital Counseling or Couples’ Therapy :-

This therapy aims at resolving marital issues and helping couples develop healthy patterns of communication and a problem solving approach to reduce frictions in marriage. It works around expectations, gender roles, need gratification and interaction patterns.

Family Therapy :- Disturbed families give rise to disturbed individuals. Family therapy aims at resolving conflicts within the family members, improving relationships and faulty interactions.

Group Therapy :- The therapist acts like a facilitator and the members of the group support each other and help resolve issues of one another. Career opportunities as a Counsellor or Psychotherapist :- Career of a psychotherapist is that of a professional. A good network can ensure a steady flow of clientele. A Counsellor or Psychotherapist can:

Set up private practice or consultation.

Get attached to an NGO.

Work as a school or College Counsellor.

Work in a hospital as a General Counsellor or choose a specific technique of counseling or psychotherapy.

Work with a psychiatrist or generally practitioner.

Get associated to a Special School.

Conduct workshops on various topics like – stress management, effective

parenting etc.

Use the skills in their respective profession – teaching, law, nursing, HR consultation etc.

RULES & REGULATIONS

1. The fees once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances. 2. All students who take admission by installments must make timely

remittances of their tuition fees, failing which the admission may be treated as discontinued.

3. In the event of some doubt arising in the interpretation of provisions,
