PROVIDENCE BRUINS SEASON RECAP: The Providence Bru-ins concluded the 2014-15 regular season with a 41-26-7-2 record (91 points), putting them second in the Atlantic Division and sixth in the Eastern Conference. Entering the AHL playoffs in the sixth seed, the P-Bruins were matched up against the Hartford Wolf-pack, the AHL affi liate of the New York Rangers, where the series went the full fi ve games. The P-Bruins jumped out to a 2-1 series lead when forward Seth Griffi th potted a triple-overtime winner in Game 3 on April 26. But Providence was unable to hold on, losing their next two matchups, with a Game 5 overtime goal from Hart-ford ending the P-Bruins hopes at a Calder Cup Championship. Griffi th and Ryan Spooner led Providence in postseason scoring with fi ve points and four points, respectively, in fi ve games played.

PROSPECT ROUNDUP: The New England Hockey Journal’s Kirk Luedeke recaps the B’s collegiate prospects, many of which whose team’s participated in the NCAA National Championship tournament in April.

DONATO MAKING STRIDES: The Summer of 2014 was a dream come true for Massachusetts-native Ryan Donato, who was the Bruins’ second round pick at the NHL Entry Draft at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Donato, son of former Bruin Ted Do-nato, attended Bruins Development Camp in July before beginning his season with the South Shore Kings and fi nishing 2015 with the Omaha Lancers of the USHL. Though the 19-year-old saw success with both teams racking up 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists) in 21 games between both squads, Donato understands what it’s going to take to get to the next level. “I realized the skill and talent level of every player at camp,” Donato explained, “and my thought leaving camp was just to get better and be bigger and stronger and just come in for camp and impress all the scouts.”

PROSPECT STANDOUTS: For the second straight year, forward Alexander Khokhlachev led the Providence Bruins in points, with 43 points (15 goals, 28 assists) in 61 games played... Following the conclusion of his season in the SHL where he posted fi ve assists in 41 games with Djurgardens IF, Linus Arnesson joined the Provi-dence Bruins to fi nish out the AHL season. Arnesson adapted to the North American game well, notching one goal and three assists in 11 games... After scoring just two goals in last year’s campaign, Rob Flick fi nished the 2014-15 season leading the Providence Bruins in goal scoring, fi nding the back of the net 19 times... Justin Florek had a strong campaign, ranking second on the P-Bruins in points with 35 tallies...Unversity of North Dakota goaltender Zane McIntyre enjoyed a very successful season, being named the con-ference’s most outstanding goaltender, a Hobey Baker fi nalist and was named the winner of the Mike Richter award as the NCAA’s top goalie In 42 games played for University of North Dakota this sea-son, the 22-year-old goaltender posted a 29-10-3 record (led the NCAA in wins) along with a 2.05 goals against average and .929 save percentage. McIntyre’s 29 wins season tied him for the second most in UND single-season history.... University of Devner’s Danton Heinen tallied an impressive 45 points (led the team) in 38 games and was named NCHC Rookie of the Year... Boston University Cap-tain Matt Grzelcyk led the terriers to a Hockey East Championship while earning career season highs in goals (10) and assists (28)... Northeastern Univeristy blueliner Matt Benning registered a team-leading 24 assists for the Huskies in the 2014-15 campaign.

BRUINS PROSPECT ROUNDUP

The Boston Bruins have gotten signifi cant mileage from their prospects playing in the NCAA this season.

Two of the biggest impact players have come out of the NCHC, where both Zane McIntyre (University of North Dakota) and Danton Heinen (University of Denver) scored major conference awards for the 2014-15 campaign. Mc-Intyre was named the conference’s outstanding goaltender, a Hobey Baker fi nalist and was named the winner of the Mike Richter award as the NCAA’s top goalie. Heinen was named NCHC Rookie of the Year after leading the Pioneers in scoring with an impressive 45 points in 38 games. His top-end hockey IQ is one of the many reasons he fi nished in the top-15 of NCAA scor-ing as a freshman.

Closer to home, Boston University captain Matt Grzelcyk capped a sensa-tional run to the Hockey East championship by earning conference First Team All-Star honors. With a career season in all offensive categories, the 2012 third-rounder continues to impress with his speed, smarts and energy from the blue line. He also secured the Terriers’ fi rst Beanpot championship since 2009 with an overtime strike to cement his reputation as a character performer in the clutch.

Northeastern defenseman Matt Benning earned Hockey East All-Star Honor-able Mention with a solid sophomore season. Although he did not score any goals, the deft puck-mover registered 24 assists (third on the team) and points (fourth on the team) from the blue line. He fi nished with just one helper fewer than each of the Huskies’ top scorers Kevin Roy and Dalen Hedges.

Boston College sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald showed glimpses into what his next couple of years at the Heights might look like offensively, as he fi nished with the team lead in goals despite a disappointing Hockey East tournament and Beanpot.

Also making a positive impression in collegiate hockey this season was Notre Dame freshman Anders Bjork, a fi fth-round draft choice last June who brings speed and a strong two-way game to the mix. Bjork had a solid second half after playing sparingly to begin the year. Harvard defenseman Wiley Sher-man is a huge (6-foot-6) but raw project. He will be an important piece for the Crimson moving forward, as players with his size and mobility are rare.

The Bruins signed rugged forward and 2012 seventh-rounder Colton Har-grove to an entry-level contract, while adding UMass free agent Frank Vatra-no to the mix as well. The former Boston Jr. Bruins scoring ace is an intriguing risk-reward signing if he can round out the other areas of his game as a pro.

Perhaps the most underrated of all Boston prospects in the college ranks this season is Yale junior Rob O’Gara. The fi nal pick of the fi fth round in 2011 has the size, intelligence and attitude to one day be a solid top-four NHL defender with the Bruins. At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds he continues to grow into his sizable frame, and with his fi ne skating/footwork and long reach, he’s tough to beat 1-on-1. This season, the Long Island native took a major step forward offen-sively, fi nishing tied with friend and junior hockey teammate Frank DiChiara for the Bulldogs team lead in scoring with 21 points.

While O’Gara will head back to New Haven for his senior season, it might not be too much longer after that before Bruins fans are seeing him in the Boston lineup. He’s perhaps the best-kept secret in the B’s organization and seems to be getting better at each and every viewing.

Although not yet an NCAA player, 2014 second-rounder Ryan Donato bounced back from a disappointing loss in the New England prep champion-ship game vs. Salisbury to make an impact for the USHL’s Omaha Lancers. In just eight games with the Lancers, he racked up fi ve goals and fi ve assists and chipped in an additional goal in three playoffs appearances. He’ll be in Cambridge next season playing for his dad at Harvard.

Bruins Prospect Snapshot:

Frank Vatrano, LW Providence Bruins (AHL)

Scouting report: East Longmeadow Mass. native is built like a fi re hydrant but moves with fl uid agility and power despite a short stride. Although not tall at about 5-foot-10, Vatrano has a low center of gravity and is strong on his skates, often getting up under defenders to outmuscle them for loose pucks and fi ghting through checks in traffi c. Deadly between the hash-marks…shot and blurry-fast release are already NHL-caliber. Possesses a natural nose for the net and can wire the puck to any corner from just about anywhere in the prime scoring areas. Three-zone game is something Vatrano will need to improve at the next level. Plays with enthusiasm and will go straight to the net…loves to score. Needs to prove that he can dedicate himself as a pro both in terms of on-ice ability and conditioning.

Outlook: With the talent to eventually play a regular shift and contribute on the power play in the NHL, Vatrano is one of the more interesting free agent signings this spring because he had a couple of years of eligibility remaining for the Minutemen. The team is looking to add more scorers to the mix, and despite the lack of ideal size and speed, the 21-year-old is a pure fi nisher who may be on the cusp of putting everything together. He’ll be one to watch in Providence as the latest local kid to get a chance to one day put on the spoked-B and skate for the hometown team.

By Jessica Isner, BostonBruins.com

AMATEUR SPOTLIGHT: Ryan Donato

For Ryan Donato, the summer of 2014 was, in a word, a whirlwind.

He was an 18-year-old kid who had just been selected in the second round of the NHL draft by his hometown team. From there, he was off to a development camp during which he would spend a week showcasing his skills — on and off the ice — among his fellow Bruins prospects in front of members of Boston’s management and coaching staff. For a couple of months, he became a quasi-celebrity.

And then, when it was all over, it was back to high school. Back to real life. It was an interesting transition, to say the least.

“I think it was a little bit diffi cult,” Donato said of re-acclimating to life as a regu-lar 18-year-old kid. “I think when I was at Bruins camp, everything was really fast and overwhelming, and everything was awesome, and there was just a lot going on always, and I think going back to prep school and everything like that was a little bit slower.

“[It] kind of felt weird, but I honestly realized that that’s probably what a lot of guys are wishing that they had, too, so I used that to my advantage and worked out as much as I could, and just tried to get ready for the next camp.”

And already, the next camp is right around the corner. It has been almost a year since Donato was selected by the Bruins with the 56th overall pick in the 2014 Draft, and in that year, Donato has dedicated himself to becoming big-ger, faster, stronger — everything that the Bruins told him they wanted him to be at the end of last summer.

“I got a better idea of what kind of player I needed to be,” Donato said. “I real-ized the skill and talent level of every player at camp, and my thought leaving camp was just to get better and be bigger and stronger and just come in for camp and impress all the scouts.

“[I want to] do what I can to impress the scouts more this year.”

Donato admitted that there were times, perhaps, when nerves got the best of him last summer. He was 18, and as a native of Boston — and as the son of former Bruin and current Harvard hockey coach Ted Donato — he was under the microscope, much more so than the majority of his fellow prospects.

“Honestly, it was pretty cool, but I just think at the beginning, I was a little bit nervous,” Donato said. “I think after [a few days], I realized it wasn’t so bad. Everybody was very welcoming, and I think this year, I’ll be just as welcoming with the new guys. I’ll be a little bit more experienced, and I’ll use that experi-ence to be a better player at this time.

The Bruins’ brass gave Donato plenty to work on over the course of the last year, and after a year at Dexter followed by a total of 24 games spent with the Omaha Lancers and then the South Shore Kings of the U.S. Hockey League, Donato is confi dent that he has fulfi lled Boston’s expectations. In those 24 games, he tallied 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists). He kept in mind what it was like to compete against the rest of his fellow prospects — future NHLers, if all goes to plan — and he focused on his size and his speed, as well as his skating.

“[I concentrated on] just being more explosive and powerful,” Donato said. “At the end of the year, I played with Omaha, which has defi nitely helped, playing at a faster pace. I think they thought that I was going to be a little bit slow and behind everybody — which I was, a little bit — but I think after this year, when I come back, [the Bruins] will see that I can play at a higher level and a higher pace.

“I think that’s one of the biggest things that I tried to work on, so hopefully, that’s what they notice.”

Once this year’s development camp is in the books, Donato will turn his focus to the next item on the docket: playing his fi rst season at Harvard, for his father.

It won’t be all that weird, Donato said. He did, after all, spend his time at Dexter playing for his uncle, so he is rather familiar with the seemingly unorthodox coach-player family dynamic.

And if anything, he added, the fact that his dad is at the helm at Harvard will push him harder.

“I think, honestly, at the end of the day, it’s just going to help me improve my game at a faster rate because [my dad] is not going to be afraid to yell at me, and he won’t be afraid to make an example out of me,” Donato said, adding, “I think at times, it will be a little bit stressful, but I think at the end of the day, it will help me more.”

The elements of his game he is focusing on improving in preparation for devel-opment camp are the same elements of his game he is honing in preparation for his fi rst year of college hockey — his explosiveness and his skating.

But even when he feels as though he is up to speed in those areas, he vows to fi nd some other area of improvement to which he can dedicate himself.

The work is never done, he said. There is always something new to improve.

“I mean, anything can always get better,” he said. “I think that’s what they were saying [at camp] — just always work hard.”

“He prepares to come to play every night. His competitiveness is infec-tious and he wants to win, fi rst and foremost.”
