Mandate

The Cochrane District Social Planning Councils mandate is to enhance and participate in social development in the larger context of community planning by:

• Promoting community discussion on social and economic issues;

• Information gathering and sharing;• Advocacy, and;• Social Awareness.

Boundaries

• The Cochrane District Social Planning Council will serve the municipalities along the Timmins/Highway11 corridor (City of Timmins, Matheson, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Smooth Rock Falls, Kapuskasing, Mattice, Hearst, and all municipality points in-between).

 • Consideration will be given to the entire Cochrane District.

Composition

• Current Interim Coordinating Committee will continue to serve as members of the Social Planning Council

• Diverse group of community minded individuals

• Overall membership needs to reflect the district and diversity of the Cochrane District

• Membership is available through recognized organizations and community members.

• Currently, the Social Planning Council has eight (8) additional seats to fill

• Nominations will be open to stakeholders shortly

• CDSPC requires candidates to submit a letter indicating interest in the SPC, as well as relevant linkage's and/or involvement with social issues.

Priorities Through extensive community forums, and multiple stakeholder interviews the district self identified four main priorities:

Priority Goals1. Holding Our Own: Young people see

Timmins/Cochrane as a place to continue to call home, raise families, build careers and contribute to civic and community life.

2. Welcoming Community: A community prepared to welcome immigrants, newcomers and in-migrants from other parts of the province and Canada to live and work in Timmins/Cochrane

3. Inclusive Community: ‘Closing the distances’ amoungst diverse parts of the population in Timmins/Cochrane to achieve a high level of social cohesion and inclusiveness.

4. Supportive & Responsive Community: A more proactive, collaborative support system that breaks down the silos among service providers for more coordinated deliver of essential health and social supports to the community.
