A Project Proposal

Introduction

„Ecollages BIH“ is a concept that integrates multifunctional aspects of design and

environmental considerations. The design concept we would like to create now and present

as BiH brand is a simple design, affordable, and adapted to local conditions. Our method is

based on design innovation and choice of materials. Our plan is to design products that can

follow new customer requirements. We think if we take care about rational resources and

materials using ultimately eco-design strategies we can bring more sustainable production

and consumption. Therefore, eco-design is an important prevention measure and important

part of environmental pollution prevention strategies. Responsibility for the Ecollages is an

opportunity to focus more closely on eco-living issues here after war destruction and

postwar recovering. From our perspective, it is an exciting time with the current

development of our first Strategic Plan and the people we are going to represent. One focus

we would especially like to pursue in our Strategic Plan is the Ecollages Lab where we will

present our new concepts. Our goals and what we have in mind to promote outcomes in eco

living areas has already provided many opportunities in synergy. For the past year with

Ecollages project organizators and coordinators have been working to establish a develop a

positive sense of sustainable design and architecture. Thus far, our project has been funded

/at first two stages/ by project organizers. Our diversity in terms ages and profiles

contributes to the reality that all efforts are at the heart of our project goals. Our strategies

serve as catalysts for long-term community investment.

The project will serve three goals: 1) Make new concepts of design and architecture 2) Build and rebuild devastated placed and towns 3) Create a working space for talents /Ecollages Lab, website and schools/.

The Project

Beginning of June 2011, the entire community became aware of the new project www.ecollages.net on the internet. Through this site we have created, all innovative students would have an opportunity to ask questions and volunteer to play an integral part in the all building process. The 2012 year we have worked more on different and interesting pieces as parts of this project. The newsletter and site gave us opportunity to publicly represent our best practices and people, thank to our donors, community leaders, and organizations for their help in developing and producing a new place where we can show our best of designs and plans.

Eco-design project incorporates environmental factors at every phase of product development and reduces negative environmental impacts throughout the product life cycle. Ultimately, eco-design can bring more sustainable production and consumption. Eco-design is not a specific method or tool, but a way to think and analyze; it is not a separate action, but part of the whole product design process. We endeavour to provide the solution for product-related environmental issues at the design phase, the beginning part. Thus negative environmental impacts will be reduced or prevented by improving product design or redesigning. Therefore, eco-design is an important prevention measure and important part of environmental pollution prevention strategies. From a wider perspective, eco-design includes technology design as well as product planning and management, which covers related process of suppliers and supply chain management. Eco-design procedure includes the following aspects:

• to analyze related legal requirements & standards and relationship among investment, production, consumption and utilization;

• to analyze and differentiate important environmental factors and relative other factors throughout the products’ life cycle;

• to design and develop in terms of quantitatively or qualitatively;

• to retrospect and finish the evaluation. B A C K G R O U N D

Increased industrialization in BiH has brought a significant positive and negative apsects in the building construction. In one hand local customs, skills and information for safe and natural materials often are inadequate. Lack of familiarity with sustainable designs and architecture means that local populations behave inappropriately in case of protection of healthy living, environment in general, future expanding and growing in this field. Consequently, the risk of wrong or poor planning during the project preparations has also increased in both industrialized and developing areas in country. „Mass destruction and post war reconstruction” that happen in longer period of time - from 1991-2005 - created very bad demographic and urban picture of BiH cities with very much destroyed natural environment. In sake of protection and better planned living so people are not to be seen as “easy” targets for new companies that would like to buld houses with less quality and standards in designs and style; this project offer a base spot for the future better understanding of healthier living.

This proposal has already been discussed with the USAID project managers, and it might be in a good position to share its experiences in the the country.

This project will be built on the expertise drawn from designs and architects from BiH or some developed countries that have advanced in this area such as Switzerland, Canada, United States and the Netherlands.

THE SUSTAINABILITY

Page 26: Proposal ecop edbr (1)

ECOLLAGES.NET

September 2012 page 26 of 11

Sustainable management in design, architecture and economy requires much more

efficient measures for strengthening the productive function, maintenance and promotion of generally useful functions of all materials, resources and plans, natural protected, regeneration of degraded areas, monitoring, scientific and research work, education of human resources about a project and details as we are presenting here.

The intensive exploitation of natural resources, highly polluting technologies that resulting degradation of environment did not offer chances for balanced development and did not open the prospects for sustainable development of Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are many cases of excessive construction of housing and business facilities, roads and other infrastructure, petrol stations, power plants, telecommunications, electric power, or water supply. There is no exchange of professional and expert information (advice and instructions), management, strategy, policy of support in form of guaranteed prices and uniform business sector policy. Likewise, information system, educational, scientific and professional institutions, legislation, and standardised plans and programmes are also lacking. The BiH villages have virtually disappeared, this deflating the motive of refugees and displaced persons to return to their farming estates. The most significant jobs for domestic contractors were and are those in the area of building facilities (devastated or new). Most of the domestically produced constructions are even today less cost-efficient buildings and dissipate a lot of energy. The imperative drive is to find a good solution for as little money as possible. Solutions we have here give us only illusive and short-term effects - cheaper construction, which subsequently requires far more expensive maintenance and are below the minimum European standards. This project could subsequently become economically self-sustainable, if we keep 50% of the savings we invested into the continuing stages of its implementation. This project could prove significant from the point of view of new job openings if people are willing to learn more, and its effects would be soon felt. The long-term economic and social results, development of domestic manufacturers of building materials and especially insulation materials would be seen very soon and is very much advisable from the environmental perspective, too. Those forms of passive heating (solar energy) are recommended and do not need large investment. The housing and construction schemes (and tax policies as well) should support and stimulate the use of domestic materials and materials that are not harmful for health and environment.

Sustainable development and combating poverty

Sustainable development of a country represents a set of measures that have for their aim

the improvement of the material and social position of the population. It is to be achieved through legislative, educational, stimulating and the appropriate strategy /programme for setting sustainable development in motion.

The Dayton Accords helped in establishment of a new BIH system, initiated the activities on the normalization of life and opened up a process of transition, democratization of life and institutional structures of the system of governance. The notion of transition implies changes in the field of social relations, legislative, political and economic system. The causes of the current poor financial standing of great many people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who live in poverty or on the edge of poverty, are very complex, as has been shown by many analyses. Under such conditions, both problems are very important: economic and the environmental. It seems that is not difficult to show that the causes of poverty and the causes of environmental degradation are the same, at least in part – like excessive utilization of resources. New and fresh ideas that will save/prevail and create much higher standards of human living and in general human surviving are needed more then ever.

Recommendations for the Eco housing and positive impact

Find a building contractor, who will follow our Ecollages Project and

• Locate a "green building" professional through our Green Building Council

Directory.

• Access the Sustainable Building Ecollages BIH Sourcebook and/or Green Building

Concepts for information about building an environmentally - friendly home

/houses we will suggest/. Peruse links for books on building green.

• New Home Location: In case of consideration of building a new home, seek out a

location around towns-cities in BIH with the best structure.

• Energy Efficient Mortgages: Create loans options and contracts with banks so

people can borrow extra money to pay for energy efficient upgrades to current

home or a new or old home that you plan to buy or redesign.

• Building Materials: Building material ideas /see straw bale, true (natural) linoleum,

previously used wood, cob for Cob Cottage, and EcoBusiness-Cob Building,

composite decking, etc./.

If you are looking to buy or sell a green home, check out our future Ecollages List.
