The Department of Economics

Lady Shri Ram College for Women is one of the most prestigious institutions of higher

learning for women in India. LSR continually strives for excellence in the sphere of

education, emphasizing on holistic learning in tandem with its philosophy, “Leadership with

Social Responsibility”.

The Department of Economics at LSR holds an unparalleled repute in India. The Department

in order to encourage and motivate learning beyond the classroom organises regularly

interactive sessions with eminent scholars in the field. Some of such guest speakers have

been Madame Christine Lagarde (Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund),

Dr. Poonam Gupta (Senior Economist at the World Bank), Mr P. Sainath (Founding Editor

of People’s Archive of Rural India, PARI), Dr. Subir Gokarn (Director of Research at

Brookings, India), Dr. Atul Sood (Associate Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New

Delhi), Dr. Nachiket Mor (Currently a Member of Central Board of Reserve Bank of India)

and Prof . Pulapre Balakrishnan (Former Director of Centre of Development Studies).

The annual student’s Symposium, Econvista, organized by the Department of Economics

provides a platform, wherein some of the most innovative and intellectual minds are brought

together to engage in discussion, interpretation and application of policies and economic

theories. Econvista aims to extend beyond the realm of Economics to deal with critical

economic, social and political issues within an integrated framework. Given its immense

popularity as providing an opportunity for applied learning, the event has been sponsored by

very many reputed organizations in the past.

The transformation of the Econvista from local to national and then to international have

been a matter of pride for us. Some of the highlights of this journey are as follows:

Econvista 2014

This National Level Economics Symposium witnessed participation from nine outstation

colleges and several Delhi University colleges. Dr. Isher J. Ahluwalia, chairperson of the

Board of Governors of Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations,

made the Symposium special with her gracious presence as the chief guest.

Econvista 2015

The event went International after being immensely successful at the national level. This

Symposium had many prominent personalities as Guest speakers like Prof. Deepak Nayyar,

former Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India, Mrs. Shikha Sharma,

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Axis Bank, Dr. Rajat Kathuria, Director

and Chief Executive at Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations. It

also had participation not only from nine national colleges, but also from international

colleges, such as Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and Kathmandu

College of Management (KCM).
