The laboratoryA story with strong roots

Apimab Laboratoires were born in Clermont l'Hrault, in the hills shaped by the Mediterranean climate. In 1975, close to Salagou Lake, beekeeper Marc-Alain Bernard, set his first beehives, determined to share his passion for bees through their best known and sweetest product - honey.Step by step, curious about what the hardworking little insect can deliver, he focussed on a material which until that stage had been considered as a waste product of the hive, namely propolis. After considerable work, research and experimentation, he managed to develop com-plex processes of purification and transformation of the propolis to extract all its properties and so the first harvest of propolis was achieved, precursor to the vast majo-rity of the company's current range of products.Today Apimab has over 20 employees, all committed to the bee and convinced of the benefits of propolis, a conviction doubtless passed on by Marc-Alain Bernard.

Ove r the years, my job as a beekeepe r allowed me to discove r many bee-de rived products and their little-known prope rtie s.Through the "Mielle r ie du Salagou"(Honey farm), a p lace to discove r the unusual beekeeping bus ine s s, I was able to share all the se benefits with a wide r circle, mos tly made up of our loyal cus tomers.

Apimab Laborator ie s, was c reated ove r a 30 year pe r iod and repre sents my pas s ion for bee s and nature in gene ral - a pas s ion that led me to become specialised in the trans-formational proce s se s of propolis for food supp lements and cosmetics manufacturing.

Propolia, my precious trademark, was the fir s t to repre sent our all round know-how of such a comp lex and unusual mate r ial as propolis.From a s ing le product in 1979 (Honey-Liquorice Propolis Gum), the company's product range now has more than 60 products. PropolisThe combination of plant and animal origins

Already known are the benefits of royal jelly, honey, pollen or beeswax on your wellbeing. Also to be discovered is that the beehive contains another treasure, not reco-gnised until recently. It has become a reliable solution to achieving natural well-being all year round - propolis.

What is propolis?Propolis is a mix of resinous, gummy and balsamic substances collected by bees from the buds of certain plants and trees, e.g. from poplars (especially in the French Propolis). Propolis, which means in Greek "in front of the City", is used to block entrances or fill gaps in the hive as a natural barrier in order to protect the colony against predators and microbiological attack.

Propolis contains a multitude of active substances, among them flavonoids, phenolic acids, aromatic acids and numerous trace elements that make it a unique substance found in nature.In recent years, scientific research has focused on propolis and highlighted* its significant potential importance for human wellbeing.

Nicely amber coloured (a reddish brown) and with a viscous consistency, bees alter the composition of the resin harvested by adding secretions and wax to it. Containing other impurities due to beekeeping activities and the bees themselves (wood particles, dead bees, pollen, sand ...), propolis is purified before use.

A number of foraging bees specialise in this difficult work. They collect the resin out of the buds with their tongue, mandibles and back legs. The bees then return to the hive where these big drops are deposited for various uses: to varnish the walls of the hive, to repair and sterilise cells or to coat and embalm foreign bodies - all of which ensure the sanitisation of the hive.The beekeeper removes propolis from the hive without harming the colony:- by annually scraping the frames of the hives- by retrieving the propolis from the grids specifically set for the bees to deposit these essential resins.The quantity of propolis harvested depends on the surrounding vegetation and breed of bee, "Caucasian" bee being the most fruitful type.Between 100g and 300g on average per hive per year is harvested. Royal jelly

Propolis for Felix and Fido Our mos t loyal companions can also benefit from the prope rtie s of propolis! But we mus t bear in mind that not eve ry dog can ab sorb alcohol based products ( their live rs may not be able for it) and cats are ve ry sens it ive to e s sential oils. The refore, we should be careful to choose the r ight product.

For cats, the Oily Propolis Solution seems to be a ve ry good compromise, e spe-cially for the uppe r laye r of the skin (epide rmis), for ears ( thanks to its softne s s) or for the g ums.
