OCTOBER 1997 NEWSLETTER OF THE WISCONSIN FEDERATION OF STAMP CLUBS

BvATFP Editor Karen Weigl

WFSC at STAMPSHOW 97 After 15 years, the American Philatelic Society's STAMPSHOW returned to Wisconsin. STAMPSHOW 97 , held August 21-24 at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee, undoubtedly was a special event for all collectors in this region.

Twenty-four Milwaukee-area philatelists served on the local organizing committee and scores more provided manpower throughout the four-day event. Most left the exhibition hall each day bone tired but yet proud to be a part of this prestigious event.

Our WFSC booth entertained a constant flow of visitors, affording us the opportunity to direct more than 200 lone collectors to a local WFSC club . Representatives of 29 of our 32 member clubs checked in to light up their club names on our Wisconsin map . Additionally, we distributed a WFSC good-will memento to 434 individuals from across the nation.

LCPS officers recently re-elected for another term are: Pres . Fred Schaeffer, VP Glenn Zinck, Secy. Howard Shaughnessy , and Treas . Walter Veile. Hang in there, guys!

There's nothing like a hot topic to incite discussion and philately offers many . Collectors of all stages can benefit from open debates . Furthermore, such sessions can serve as a substitute for a scheduled speaker, with no advance planning. Just throw out a topic and let it flow.

I've noted several provocative topics while reading the minutes of the Elmira (NY) Stamp Club . The minutes are regularly published in Stamp Insider, newsletter of the Federation of Central New York Philatelic Societies:

• Mixtures - worthwhile or a waste of time and money

• What's wrong with the Scott catalog? • Buying philatelic supplies • Archival quality of supplies • What countries are best to collect? • Collecting beyond Scott • Is it better to collect mint or used stamps? • Collecting stamps as an investment While studying the Oshkosh Philatelic

Society's annual program schedule, I found some more great topics:

• Ins and outs of auctions • What kind of catalog is best? • What album do you use? • Displaying material at shows, etc . • What to use for mounting philatelic material • If you were appointed postmaster for a

week, what changes would you make? From the manner in which the topics are

stated, I assume that at least some are meant to promote open discussion.

What others are doing

Green Bay Philatelic Society officers reelected for the 1997-98 club year are : Pres. Kirk Becker, VP Gordon Lindner, Secy. Clete Delvaux, and Treas . Ken Coakley .

The Lake County Philatelic Society (Gurnee/Grayslake, IL) has seemingly tried everything in the past few years to bring in potential new members , and let's hope its June meeting experience won't lead to giving up. When a club member was scheduled to speak on the subject of golf on stamps, posters were

Members of the Northwestern Mutual Stamp Club (Milwaukee) enjoyed an April program focused on United Nations philately . It was followed by a quiz on the same subject.

WOW! The Belle City Stamp Club's (Racine) April donation auction added almost $150 to the treasury . 1997-98 BCSC officers are: Pres . Frank Garniss, VP Bill Pier, Secy. Ray Wood, and Treas. Serge Logan.

Alice Bieda is the Kenosha Stamp and Cover Club's new president. VP Carl Sandine was re-elected for another two-year term.

The Oshkosh Philatelic Society elected Paul Thoman to serve as its new president. At the death of member Charles Buck, past-President Hank Schmidt will fill in as acting VP. ■

CoNfEdERATE STATES of AMERicA PART I Gary Zink has collected stamps since 1962, and began his specialty collection of Confederate stamps and covers in 1973. In addition to his local membership in the Janesville Stamp Club, he belongs to the American Philatelic Society, Confederate Stamp Alliance, and Universal Autograph Society. He 's also a member of the History Round Table, a group that meets in Madison, WI.

Gary has widely exhibited his collections since 1980 and has won many awards, including four Best of Shows. His exhibit titled "A Brief Study of the Confederate London and Local Printings " took a bronze medal in open competition at STAMPSHOW 97.

With the secession of South Carolina from the

United States on December 20, 1860, 10 more

Southern states eventually seceded and became

the Confederate States of America. The other states that seceded (all in 1861) were:

Mississippi - January 9 Florida - January 10 Alabama - January 11 Georgia - January 18

Louisiana - January 26 Texas - February 1 Virginia - April 17 Arkansas - May 6 North Carolina - May 21 Tennessee - June 8

At this time, the states were still using

United States stamps. They were valid for usage

until June 1, 1861, when the Confederate Post

Office took over . On that date, United States

stamps were declared invalid and Southern

postmasters were told to use whatever means

they had to provide postage to the general

public . Government postage (regular issues)

would not be available for usage until October

16, 1861.

The seceded states formed their government

and the Confederate States of America was

established on February 4, 1861. The cover in

Figure 1 was canceled on February 4 , 1861, in

Raleigh, NC. North Carolina was admitted to

the Confederacy on May 27 . U.S. Scott #26 was

used for postage .

Figure 2 shows the embossed 1860 issue

canceled February 21, 1861, Columbus, MS.

This particular issue of embossed covers is the

only one that was postally-used in the Confederacy.

The cover in Figure 3 includes a U .S.

Scott #26. It was canceled February 21, 1861, in Mobile, AL. Alabama joined the Confederate States of America just 17 days before.

The cover in Figure 4 was also franked with a U.S. Scott #26 and canceled May 5, 1861, in Montgomery, AL. At that time, Montgomery was the capital of the Confederate States of America. The seat of govern-

ment was moved to Richmond, VA, a little more than 20 days later. It was felt Rich

mond could be more strategically defended than Montgomery, AL.

The cover is addressed to Mrs. Howell Cobb at Macon, GA, by Howell Cobb himself. He was the first choice for provisional president of the Confederacy but declined to accept the position. Cobb was later appointed a brigadier general by

Jefferson Davis and commanded a brigade of 3,800 men, one of the largest in the Confederate Army . ■

oinin with uniors STAMPSHOW 97 Youth Area A large area devoted solely to young collectors at STAMPSHOW 97 proved to be a big hit with future philatelists. Over 600 youngsters had the opportunity to experience the fun and excitement that our hobby can generate .

The youth area concept has been undergoing radical changes in recent years. With prototypes being used at the New York MegaEvents and culminating in the version premiering at Pacific 97, it is apparent that the U .S. Postal Service and the American Philatelic Society are hoping to tum the tide and bring more young collectors into the hobby.

A rainbow of colorful balloons arched the entrance to the Stampers Kids area. (Stampers is the trade name for the new Postal Service's youth program which introduced "cards" as a whole new way to collect and save stamps .) Each child was asked to register . In order to obtain a gift bag, six activities needed to be completed from among these choices :

• Stamps Around the World - Children could select stamps and carry them home in a first-day envelope .

• Stamp Adventurer - A board game. • Stampers Address Labels - Touch

screen computers were used to produce barcoded address and parcel labels.

• Stamp Wizards - Kids learned how to soak stamps from paper.

interesting background information about stamp designs. Word searches, crossword puzzles , true/false, and complete-the-sentence activities were used to test the child's understanding of the passages .

• Geo-Safari Games - Electronic games using stamps as the media to help children learn about a wide variety of subjects. These popular games are available for sale through the APS and are quite standard in most youth areas, especially at national -level shows.

For completion of six activities , children were rewarded with a gift bag worth about $25. A dinosaur stamp T-shirt was popular

If you are an active first-day cover collector, I

emphatically suggest that you try cachetmaking . I've been doing an occasional cachet since the 1977 United States Christmas issues

(Scott Nos . 1729 and 1730), and each time it ' s been an experience that has given me a rush

like no other in my many years of philately. It

has brought me national and international notoriety, but on a rather restricted scale, of course.

I cannot say that cachetmaking will do the

same for you or that it will put any dollars in

somewhat since I got started. At that time , there were very few amateurs, but within the last 20 years , many have entered the field . There is, however, always room for more .

If you are into trading for items for your collection, you'll find your own cachets to be excellent material for such transactions . Also, sending your cachets to philatelic friends without requesting payment often reaps great items . At the very least, it will bring interesting material to add to your trading stock.

Of course, there is a monetary investment in cachet production that often will not be returned. It helps to create cachets in only one color and to limit your run to about 100 covers .

Getting back to some of the notoriety I have received, it's been in the form of my cachets appearing in Scott's First Day Cover

& So Fonh . I have also been written up in First Days, the official journal of the American First Day Cover Society.

My first cacheted FDC appeared in Mike Malone's 1982 Cover Lovers' National Auction with an estimated value of $10 and . sold for $8. I had donated most of those 1977 covers to a First Day Cover Collectors of Wisconsin fund-raiser , for which they were offered for sale at $ I each . Thus , this particular cover increased in value seven times in just five years.

On Wisconsin In I 998, the Badger State

::- celebrates its 150th anniversary of statehood. As a prelude to the

occasion, this col/,/mn regulgrly features a stamp, or other postal item, and story pertaining to the· · state of Wisconsin.

Many Wisconsin· industries can be traced back to the days of fur traders and lead miners . One early industry - the tanning and leat1:_er

, industry - expanded rapidly in Wisconsin, due in part to immigrating Europeans who were skilled in the trade.

Chicago slaughterhouses provided the rawhides from their incoming shipments of Plains cattle . The vast resources of hemlock timber in the state provided the bark from which tannin, the basic requirement of the tanning trade, was extracted . ■

U.S. Scott #1720 I must say that each time I receive public notice, I'm elated to a level just short of

admission to a psychiatric facility. A Piece of Madison History that Can't be Repeated Are my cachets works of art? Not on your

life . A critic once described my output to be a half step up from junk, and sometimes even junk. Even so, my advice is to give cachetmaking a shot. Don't care what others might say about your work, trade with friends, and let me know when you have something in stock . I predict you will have lots of fun and make many new friends.

In my next article, I'll discuss materials used for amateur cachetmaking and how to deal with copyright issues .

This is what I have to say . What do you

have to say? ■

When members of the DANEPEX '97 organizing committee decided on the theme of postal "firsts," it wanted to go all out and depict an actual 1861 Madison killer within the show's special cancel. The killer tracing was found in "United States Cancellations 1845-1869," by H .C . Skinner and A. Eno .

"No, no," said a Milwaukee Postal Service official who argued the design is the shape of a pentagram, which connotes religion. Specifically, the pentagram is related to witchcraft, and that could open up a tremendous can of worms with DANEPEX being held at a Christian school.

Needless to say , there's no fighting city hall (or today 's polit ical correctness), so the DANEPEX cancel was resub-mitted with another original 1861 geometric design. ■
