The Main House

The main house has a canopied entrance porch with double doors opening into an elegant square galleried reception hall. To one side are a coats cupboard and a guest cloakroom. A beautiful cantilevered staircase with its polished handrail scrolls and balustrade, rises to a galleried landing. An oak ground floor, heated from beneath, has been laid through the main reception rooms giving a natural flow. A pair of double doors open back into a delightful dining room with a wide bay inset with French doors opening onto the rear terrace with its view over the Thames, protected open land opposite and the house’s private 130ft mooring, suitable for two substantial cruising boats!

The high corniced ceiling and full height windows and doors with glazed fanlights give the rooms a lovely feeling of space and light. A wide square arch opens into the drawing room which is an elegant room flooded with natural light, being triple aspect with three sets of French doors opening onto the south and west facing terraces, and to the front a large sash window overlooks the meadow. An open fireplace with its classic marble surround provides an attractive focal point to the room. The kitchen/breakfast room has been thoughtfully planned and fitted with a range of light maple fronted units complemented by cream Italian marble worktops inset with a double width Belfast sink and a recess housing the Rangemaster dual fuel range cooker and an integrated dishwasher. Either side of the deep bay window are two larders and a further set of French doors open onto the river-facing terrace, perfect for al fresco dining. To the front, a separate utility room with a quarry tiled floor and a trap door to the wine cellar, completes the ground floor.

Upstairs

The first floor, the layout has been arranged for our client’s specific requirements as writers and editors, but with the forethought and services to easily convert into four bedrooms leading off a large central landing.

The master bedroom suite is situated on the southwesterly corner, positioned for the best views and with direct access onto a riverside balcony. There are “his and her” walk-in wardrobes and an en suite bathroom. Currently, an open arch leads into a library (bedroom 3) with its bay window opening onto the balcony and double doors onto the landing and double-study area. The family bathroom has a 4-piece period style suite with a spa bath, shower cubicle and mahogany vanity unit.

The Tower House is situated in open countryside on the fringe of Shepperton village, with its bustling High Street and station approx. 1.25 miles away. The larger town centres of Chertsey, Staines and Walton are within 1.5, 4.3 and 2.4 miles respectively, providing excellent shopping and leisure facilities. For the theatregoer, there are a number of reputable regional theatres within easy reach and London’s West End is only 19 miles away.

You will be ideally placed for major road networks with Junction 1, M3 and the start of the A316 to London being only 4 miles drive, and Junction 11 of the M25 only 2.5 miles drive. On the B357, the road that passes the estate, there is a stop for buses going to Heathrow in just 37 minutes - handy if you don’t want the headache of parking there.

Garden & Exterior

The grounds are a magnificent backdrop and play a significant role extending to about 3 acres, approached from the road through a field gate along a 100 metre gravel drive, flanked by mature chestnut trees to a paved parking area, big enough for half-a-dozen cars, with a large raised flower bed and a Victorian well.

One of the historic obligations of the Lord of the Manor, was to provide gaol. Whilst this is no longer valid, as a humorous nod to tradition, an arched door inset into a mock gaol wall conceals a handy garden store. Beyond is a secluded patio and to the side is the portion of London Bridge that was removed 100 plus years ago, that makes an attractive garden feature as well as an interesting talking point.

The lawned riverside garden stretches down to the towpath that is framed by two mature trees and inset with a large pond, graced with good statuary and flanked by two fine mature weeping willows, that plays host to semi-resident pair of ducks and Egyptian geese. Victorian wrought iron railings and gates open onto the towpath and the private river frontage with landing stages and pontoons. To the north and western sides of the house is a meadow bordered and screened by railings and mature laurel hedging.

Additional Features

1. The title of ‘Lord of the Manor of Shepperton’ is included within the sale.

2. The well is fitted with a pump to feed the main pond and flower beds. With a little adaptation, it could provide water for all the cultivated garden - useful at times of restriction.

3. The house is raised about 3’6” above the ground around it, to bring it above the 100-year flood level, a feature not shared by many other existing homes with river frontage.

Getting Here

From the bottom of Shepperton High Street, turn right at the war memorial roundabout onto Renfree Way. The Tower House can be found set back on the left hand side a short way past Dockett Eddy Lane.
