PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:can be used: -to identify a material, -to choose a material for a specific purpose, -to separate the substances in a mixturePhysical properties only change the appearance of thesubstance, NOT its chemical makeup.

EXAMPLES OF PHYSICALPROPERTIES

VISCOSITYThe tendency of a liquid to keep from flowing: RANK IN ORDER ofIncreasing viscosity.

CONDUCTIVITYA materials ability to allowheat to flow through it.Rank in order of increasingConductivity.

MALLEABILITYThe ability of a solid to be hammered without shattering.Rank in order of increasing malleability.

Melting or Boiling PointThe temperature at which the stateOf matter changes (solid to liquid, Liquid to gas.) Which has a higher melting point?

DENSITY ratio between mass and volume. Can be used to test purity, sinceall substances have specific, unchanging densities. It is ameasure of how much mass is ina certain volume.

A change in size, shape, or state.

composition of matter. Think of it as potentials. Dry paper has the potential to burn;

therefore it is flammable.

EXAMPLES:FLAMMABILITY-ability to Burn in the presence of oxygen.

REACTIVITY-how readily a substance combines chemicallywith other substances.
