Causes of fires are everywhere!- preventive fire protection with smoke detectors!

In every household there are numerous potential sources of fire, from the playroom in the base-ment to the attic. Smouldering fires that produce poisonous smoke for a long time without being discovered are particularly frequent and dan-gerous. They can turn into a fatal hazard. Smoke detectors have shown to be a preventive fire protection.

Can you hear your smoke detector?

Do you live, and what‘s even more important, do you sleep on more than one floor or in a house, or is the children‘s room at a distance from the parents‘ bedroom? In that case we would recom-mend that you use cross-linked smoke detectors, either wireless or wired, so the alarm will go off in time in case one of the smoke detectors in the house or apartment warns you of a fire. Depen-ding on the type and cross-linking you can even see which smoke detector has sounded the alarm, i.e. which room has been affected. Ask your specialized dealer which systems would be best for you.

Installation

Smoke detectors can be installed easily withthe enclosed screws and dowel pins, even byunskilled persons.

For optimum protection you will have toobserve the following rules when you install a smoke detector:

• Always install smoke detectors on the ceiling, because smoke rises upward• on the ceiling in the center of the room, or at least 50 cm away from walls• always in a horizontal position (applies to roof slopes, too)• not near air shafts and in strong air drafts• not in the tip of the roof (at least 30 to 50 cm below it)• not in rooms where there is usually severe steam, dust or smoke

For safety reasons smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years at the latest.

Fire Prevention

Smoke detectors cannot prevent fires. They can only recognize them early and soundan alarm. The best thing is to prevent fires in the first place. Therefore the following advice should be observed in your living space: • Never smoke in bed. • Use only noncombustible containers for cigarette butts and cigar ends. • Never leave electrical devices, such as an iron, stove, coffee machine unsupervised when turned on.

• Never use water to extinguish burning fat (e.g. in pan or fondue device), but use a fire blanket or woollen blanket or fitting lid (never use synthe- tic blankets).• Have gas or electrical appliances repaired only by qualified service centers.• Never leave an open fire (e.g. candles) unsuper- vised.
