The Olympic Torch has always served as an international symbol of brotherhood and peace; but this year, the icon takes on even greater significance. For one: the triumph of human ingenuity in the face of daunting physical obstacles. Its designer—plane and train manufacturer, Bombardier—was charged with the challenge of creating a torch whose flame could endure extreme winter temperatures and burn cleanly, brightly, safely and inexpensively while traveling by land, air and water for 106 days, lighting up 1,036 communities across 45,000 cold Canadian kilometers—the longest domestic torch relay in Olympic history. And to Bombardier there was just one fuel for the task: Propane. Considering past games have seen everything from gun powder and olive oil to the disastrously skin-scorching magnesium and aluminum blazes of the 1956 Melbourne games and the smoky propylene-fueled “cigarette” torch of the Atlanta games—the relative safety and stability of the 2010 torch fuel—made of propane (which boasts the lowest flammability range of all alternative fuels) blended with isobutane and other hydrocarbons—may have been triumph enough. But, that is just the beginning of the benefits this fuel of champions. With a wide operational range from -50°C to +40°C, the torch of the Vancouver Games burns brightly at a lower temperature than any torch before it (www.vancouver2010.com). This long-enduring flame becomes even more impressive when you consider that it’s also blazing the trail in another global dilemma: the energy crisis. Produced in the U.S.A. and in Canada, propane is a government-supported alternative fuel offering high energy density and low greenhouse gas emissions. And in that sense, the symbolic 2010 Olympic Torch is, above all, a bright symbol of hope.

Produced in the U.S.A. and in

Canada, propane is a government-supported alternative fuel offering high energy density and low greenhouse gas emissions.

And in that sense, the symbolic 2010 Olympic Torch is, above all, a bright symbol of hope.

Re-evaluating Home Energy Efficiency from the Roof DownSave Cash on Home “Clunkers”

There’s a lot of talk about energy-efficient cars, but what about those other unassuming fuel-consuming monsters of America—our homes? The average house emits twice as many greenhouse gases as the average car!

Luckily, propane users are already on their way to a clean, green home: Propane is an approved, alternative clean fuel and, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, “Propane gas furnaces and heaters … have a longer average life span of 20 years, compared with electric heat pumps’ 12-year average life span.” (www.npga.org). If energy efficiency doesn’t motivate you, saving money might: it could cost up to twice as much to operate your range, water heater, dryer or furnace with electricity than with propane gas.

So, aside from sticking with one of the cleanest-burning alternative fuels available, avoid buying, renting or living in a “clunker,” by spotting these energy-sapping usual suspects:

Roofs: Dark roofs tend to absorb heat from the sun, making attic vents key to cutting heat retention. Lighter roof colors will also help reduce heat absorption.

Walls: Hitting a wall in reducing your energy bills? Thinning and deficient wall insulation could be the culprit.

Windows and Doors: Unsealed or unfortified windows and doors can release our hard-earned heating and air conditioning even when closed. Choose reinforced and insulating materials and check for cracks and breaks in interior or exterior caulking.

Heating/Air Conditioning: The age and condition of your heating, water heating, and air condition systems will have

a significant effect on the overall efficiency of your propane. Look for equipment with high Energy Star ratings and Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratios (SEER) and remember to do regular maintenance on old pumps, pipes and ducts that can lead to leaked resources.

Floor: Wood, stone, tile, or concrete flooring feel cold to the toes; stay warm and save on heating bills with carpet, or beef up floor insulation.

Using “Outdoor” Propane Heaters INSIDE Can Be Deadly Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning is nothing to take lightly. Like disease, death, or illness, most people believe it will never happen to them. In actuality, accidents or equipment malfunction can happen at any time.

Carbon Monoxide: The Facts• CO is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that is extremely poisonous.• When propane is burned, it depletes (“eats up”) the oxygen from the air in addition to releasing carbon monoxide, which can be a deadly combination.

• Inhaling CO can cause dizziness, headaches, nausea, and in high levels, loss of vision & death.

• 1,500 Americans die every year from accidental exposure to carbon monoxide, and 10,000 more are injured (www.childrenshospital.org)

Outdoor Portable Propane Heater PrecautionsPropane heaters that are designed for outdoor use are generally connected to a small, portable propane tank. If an outdoor propane heater is used in an area that is not well-ventilated, CO can quickly fill the area. Because of this, it is extremely important to remember that outdoor heaters must never be used inside. This includes not only houses, but garages, basements, and other enclosed spaces. Outdoor heaters should also never be placed near a home’s open window, as CO can drift inside and fill a room.

Indoor Propane HeatersPropane heaters are approved for indoor use. In California, only “natural vent” and/or “direct vent” heaters are allowed to be used inside a home; these are heaters that are installed (by a professional) in a wall or attic and are attached to a vent leading outdoors. Unvented heaters, which are connected to a propane tank through piping, by law, are to be used only in RVs. RVs typically have carbon monoxide sensors, and unvented heaters have oxygen depletion sensors. It is important to note that some heaters approved for RV use require that a window be propped open. These types of heaters do not emit carbon monoxide, but they do consume oxygen.

Safe, Reliable & AffordableAs long as precautions are taken, propane heaters are extremely safe, reliable, and affordable. When purchasing a unit, speak with a

propane expert about proper usage, and take care to read the user manual and manufacturer’s warning labels. The most important thing to do to stay safe is to understand how to safely use your propane products.
