PROPAGANDA'S AIM

Appeals to Patriotism Appeals to Emotions Demonizing the enemy. Reinforce negative stereotypes by

using name calling such as calling the Germans, Huns.

TOTAL WAR!

Propaganda was mainly used in the Total War that evolves out of the growing media and WWI

Total war is the dedication of every resource to the war effort, and is marked by high governmental control. One form of government control is censorship

USES AND EXAMPLES OF PROPAGANDA

Lord Kitchener and Uncle Sam. First usage during WWI to promote enlistment into the military

Propaganda was also used to promote the home front to actively engage in the war effort.

•Ways to engage was by buying bonds to support the effort•Turning in needed resources used in bullet making such as copper•Cutting back on certain foods like breads so that the troops would have more food overseas•Joining the red cross

USE OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN

Examples of posters used to promote service to the country by playing on emotions of the people.

Demonization was also a tool used. A country would show the enemy as some sort of monster to help encourage men to enlist and fight.

1. Only greedy rulers want war. The people want peace, and work, and bread.

2. Only the German Kaiser with his militarists, Junkers, and arms manufacturers wanted war, prepared for it and brought it on. No one wanted to fight Germany, no one opposed her desires for a "place in the sun."

BATTLE REPORTS

Battle of Ypres. British Newspaper: “To the north of Ypres our progress has been

continued, especially on our left. We have taken six quick-firers, two bomb-throwers, and much material; and made several hundred prisoners, including several officers.The losses of the enemy were extremely high. At a single point on the front, in the proximity of the canal we counted more than six hundred German dead. On the heights of the Meuse, on the front Les Eparges-St Remy-Calonne trench, we have continued to gain ground, about one kilometre, and have inflicted on the enemy very severe losses.”

German Newspaper: "In Flanders the British yesterday again

attempted to regain the ground they had lost. In the afternoon they attacked from both sides but the attack completely broke down. An evening attack further east failed, with severe British losses.“

Reality: There were three battles of Ypres: All together at least 700,000 casualties were suffered on both sides.

One Kilometer = .62 miles.
