PROPAGA NDA: BANK SY Who is Banksy? Banksy is a world-renowned artist who uses his original street art form to promote alternative aspects of politics from those promoted by the mainstream media. Some believe that his graffiti helps to provide a voice for those living in urban environments that could not otherwise express themselves, and that his work is also something which improves the aesthetic quality of urban surroundings; others disagree, asserting that his work is simple vandalism. Who is Banksy? https://www.youtub e.com/watch?v=5Pa hSMYjA8g&spfrelo ad=10 FIRST LOOK TITLE: NAPALM The image of the girl was reproduced from a photograph of a Napalm bombing of a Vietnamese village in 1972, which provoked worldwide horror and condemnation at the conduct of the war. FIRST LOOK TITLE: What Are You Looking At? LOCATION: Londons Marble Arch Tube Station (2004) Every time you go to London you are recorded by a ridiculous amount of CCTV cameras on your travels. In 2004, the ubiquity of surveillance cameras was a shocking indictment of an ever-more ominous political state. FIRST LOOK TITLE: Falling Shopper LOCATION: Mayfair, London (Nov., 2011) Falling Shopper was purposely placed in upmarket, high-end shopping district of Mayfair, part of London with a high density of upscale shops. Toting Banksys usual subliminal overtones, Falling Shopper provokes ample political and social discussion about consumerism. FIRST LOOK TITLE: If At First You Dont Succeed Call An Airstrike LOCATION: San Francisco (2010) Painted during a 2010 run on the city of San Francisco. Banksy had spent a 30-day period unveiling two handfuls of pieces in the streets of San Francisco.. FIRST LOOK TITLE: Destroy Consumerism LOCATION: New York Only one in a range of politically engaged street work by Banksy. Ironically, Wal-Mart ripped off this piece, and was selling it on t-shirts. What is ironic about this piece? Make this the year YOU discover a new destination. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e2dShY8jIo Gaza Strip Banksy in Gaza In the video, Banksy outlines the hardships faced by Palestinians living under occupation in the Strip especially following last summer's Israeli war which killed more than 2,200 people, mainly civilians. On July 8, 2014, Israel launched a military operation, codenamed Operation Protective Edge in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. What followed was seven weeks of bombardment, Palestinian rocket attacks, and ground fighting. The street artist explained a spray-painted bit of commentary the reaction of a local man to the work, and his response: A local man came up and said 'Please what does this mean?' I explained I wanted to highlight the destruction in Gaza by posting photos on my website but on the internet people only look at pictures of kittens. FIRST LOOK Title: Government Spies Location: Cheltenham, London (2014) The mural depicts mysterious 1950s style agents listening in on a telephone box in reference to former CIA agent Edward Snowdon exposed techniques used by several agencies. The house on which the mural was painted is close to GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) which is the UK equivalent of Americas NSA. FIRST LOOK Title: Soldiers Painting Peace Sign Location: London (Near Parliament) The original was confiscated for allegedly breaking laws regarding protests in this area. It has been suggested that it represents the repression of free speech as well as acting as an anti-war protest. This satirical work by Banksy repudiates the repression of free speech that often takes place when a nation is at war, in an effort to maintain the appearance of consensus. FIRST LOOK Title: Death of a Telephone Box Location: Soho, London This broken telephone box appeared overnight in a Soho street complete with an axe and pool of blood, just after the change in London away from the iconic red phone boxes to a more modern design. It is argued to represent the death of phone communication thanks to the birth of social media. FIRST LOOK Title: Flower Thrower Location: Jerusalem (2003) The subject, who appears to be involved in a riot, wears a handkerchief and backwards cap and is depicted armed with a bouquet of flowers instead of a Molotov cocktail. The complete work is done in black and white, except the flowers, which are in color. Banksy leads us to believe the subject has armed himself for a riot or a war. FIRST LOOK Title: Sweep It Under the Carpet Location: North London Banksy's maid keeping the streets of Hoxton Square clean and tidy. Those red bricks have been painted on the white wall of the White Cube gallery. Reberl Rocket Attack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsF3HspQY6A Title: Rebel Rocket Attack Location: Video 2006 The actual audio is take from a video of Mennegh Airport in Syrias war-torn Aleppo posted on February 23, A voice in the background yells, Go back, go back, go back, and another documents the footage saying, God is the greatest; Aleppos military council air defense battalion. Throughout the video, the rebels are heard shouting the infamous Takbir, a chant often used by Islamists during protests and moderate Muslims praising God, Allahu Akbar, meaning God is the Greatest.." Nazi propagandists targeted the German people who were unemployed and living on the breadline, and they suggested Hitler as their way out, their savior.
