General Engineering Data

Heat Treat Options

Promac employs several heat treating processes to improve material characteristics. The heat treating processused in each application is determined by the particular requirements of the application. In addition wherethe application dictates, chain parts can be plated.

Through-Hardening

In through-hardening, the material is heat treated throughout. This process primarily increases the strength ofthe material although wear resistance is also improved. Through-hardening is generally performed onsidebars, pin, rollers, some bushings, and on sprockets.

Carburizing

Carburizing is a surface heat treating process which primarily increases wear resistance of pins, bushings, andsome rollers and sprockets. This process is used when maximizing surface hardness and wear resistance isdesired.

Induction Hardening

In this process parts are first thru-hardened and then the surface areas are induction hardened to a controlleddepth. The core is left tough and ductile. This process provides a surface much harder than is possible withthru-hardening alone. The harder surface can double the wear life of chain components while the ductile coreretains the ability to absorb the impact and shock loads encountered in chain applications.

Plating

The purpose of plating generally is to provide added resistance to corrosion. Two types of plating arerecommended for chain parts: 1) Mechanical Galvanizing, 2) Hot Dip Galvanizing.

Mechanical galvanizing is the preferred coating because of the higher corrosion and corrosion-fatigueresistance it produces. Hot dip galvanizing provides a thicker protective coating and is generally used herevariations in coating thickness can be permitted.

General Engineering Data

Chain Performance & Fatigue Strength

The failure of properly engineering and maintained engineering chain is commonly caused by one of twofactors: Wear (elongation) or Fatigue, engineering chain quality and life expectancy is directly related to itsresistance to wear fatigue.

Fatigue

When used in chain terminology, fatigue is the endurance of a chain when a load is applied under recurringcycles. During a complete cycle, chain will go through a period of tension and slack. The greater the loadapplied, the fewer cycles the chain can endure. The point at which a constantly applied load will not causefatigue breakage is called the endurance limit or fatigue strength.

Wear

When used in chain terminology, elongation is the result of wear due to the erosion of metal in the bearingarea of the chain (pins and bushings) caused by friction. The oscillation and contact of the moving chain partswill cause roller chain to elongate. Elongation causes improper chain and sprocket tooth contact requiringchain replacement.

Tensile Strength

This is the point at which the chain will break with a load applied one single time. Tensile strength is not anindicator of chain quality. Choosing a chain based on tensile strength and tensile strength calculations is notthe best way of selecting a chain.

Fatigue vs. Tensile Strength

In real life applications, fatigue strength is far more important than tensile strength. When selecting a chain, calculating from Maximum Allowable Loads is much more accurate than calculating from Tensile Strength.

Fatigue Strength

This is the point when the load applied will not longer cause fatigue breakage. This point is called theendurance limit or fatigue strength.

Catenary Sag

The return strand of a chain normally has some slack. This slack results in a sag, called catenary sag, of thechain. This sag must be of the correct amount if thechain is to operate properly. If the return strand is tootight (too little carenary sag). the load and the wear onthe working parts will be excessive. If the return strandis too loose, vibration and unwanted chain flexure willresult. A chain that is properly installed will permitflexing of the return stand by hand. This flexure, measured from a staight line, should not be less thanabout 3% of the horizontal center distance.

The amount of catenary sag that will be present can becalculated as follows.

CS = .375 BEWhere CS = Catenary sag (inches)

L = Return Strand length (inches)B = Center distance (inches)E = Excess chain, L – B (inches)

Depending on the combination of chain pitch, sprocket center distance, and the number of teeth inthe sprockets, there will always be excess chain in thesystem. The catenary sag resulting from this excesschain for various sprocket center distances is given inthe table below.

Catenary Sag – Inches

NOTE: Values above and to the right of the heavy stepped line represent 3% or greater sag.

Lubrication

Proper lubrication of a chain is of supreme importance, if long life and satisfactory service are to be maintained.During operation, an oscillating motion takes place between the pins and the bushings, and between the housingsand the rollers. The rubbing surfaces are hardened, but the quality of these surfaces is quickly destroyed unless theyare separated by a lubricating film.

Lubrication is also required between the link plates of the pin links and those of the roller links, and between theroller-link plates and the sides of the sprocket teeth.

Secondary functions of lubrication include the prevention of rust and corrosion, and the cushioning of the joints toreduce shock and noise.

Lubricant SpecificationsThe lubricant used must have the following properties:1. It must be sufficiently fluid to reach the internal surfaces of the bushings and rollers.2. It must have sufficient body to maintain a separating film between the bearing surfaces.3. It must be free from corrosive elements.4. It must be capable of maintaining its lubricating qualities under the operating conditions of temperature, moisture, etc.

For normal installations, a pure mineral oil is recommended. The operating conditions (speed, load, temperature, method of application, etc.) determine the viscosity required, as follows:

The oil should be delivered to the upper edges of the link plates on the lower strand of the chain, near the pointwhere the strand engages with the sprocket. Oil delivery rates should be regulated to assure complete lubricationwithout flooding. Scheduled servicing is necessary to make sure that the lubricators are kept filled and dripping.Drip lubrication should be used only in clean environments.

Temperature Degrees F Recommended Lubricant-20- +40 SAE 2040-100 SAE 30100-120 SAE 40120-140 SAE 50

At elevated temperature, attention must be paid to the decrease in viscosity and to possible loss in lubricating quality.

Expansion of Bodies by Heat

The coefficient of linear expansion (ε) is the change in length, per unit of length, for a change of one degree oftemperature. The coefficient of surface expansions is approximately two times the linear coefficient, and thecoefficient of volume expansion, for solids, is approximately three times the linear coefficient.

A bar, free to move, will increase in length with an increase in temperature and will decrease in length with adecrease in temperature. The change in length will be εtl, where (ε) is the coefficient of linear expansion, (t) thechange in temperature, and (l) the length. If the ends of a bar are fixed, a change in temperature (t) will cause achange in the unit stress of Eεt, and in the total (stress of) AEεt, where A is the cross-sectional area of the bar and (ε)the modulus of elasticity.

Spocket Pitch Diameter Constants

Example: To determine pitch diameter of a 18tooth sprocket for W124 chain, multiply th echain pitch of 4.000 times the18 tooth constant of 5.7588. Pitch diameter is equal to 4.000 x 5.7588 =23.04.

To obtain the pitch diameter of a sprocket, multiply the constant for the number of teeth, or pitches, from the table belowby the chain pitch.
