HHS Mandate an Assault on our Religious LibertiesEditor’s note—As this newsletter went topress, “Stand up for Religious Freedom”rallies were being planned for March 23in more than 100 cities across the coun-try to protest this assault on our religiousliberties. Pro-Life Action Ministries wasplanning rallies in St. Paul, Duluth andOrlando. (www.standupforreligiousfreedom.com)

The recent mandate from the U.S.Department of Health and Human Ser-vices (HHS) forces religious people, organizations, hospitals and educationalinstitutions to provide abortion-inducingdrugs, contraception and sterilization indirect contradiction to deeply held moralbeliefs. But the issue is not about contra-ceptives nor their availability, contrary tomany media reports and the propagandaefforts of Planned Parenthood and itsassociates. That may be the ignition forour need to respond, but the issue is

plainly and simply our religious free-doms being assaulted by our government. Our First Amendment freedom of reli-

gion is supposed to guarantee that wewill not be kept from practicing our faithor be told by the government what tobelieve or how to live out our beliefs. That is why this mandate is an attack onall Americans and not just Catholics. And our freedom of religion is an indi-vidual liberty that does not hinge on thefaith to which we belong. And because,as people of faith, we organize togetherinto churches and other institutions forworship and living our faith, thesechurches and other institutions enjoy thesame First Amendment freedoms.

As Timothy Cardinal Dolan of NewYork stated in his February 24, 2012 let-ter to all Catholic bishops, “In the UnitedStates, religious liberty does not dependon the benevolence of who is regulatingus. It is our ‘first freedom’ and respect forit must be broad and inclusive—not nar-row and exclusive. Catholics and otherpeople of faith and good will are not sec-ond class citizens. And it is not for thegovernment to decide which of our min-

istries is ‘religious enough’ to warrantreligious freedom protection.”We have the deceptive voices of those

attempting to force this mandate upon ustestifying that we are seeking to denycontraceptives. There is nothing in theefforts to stop the HHS mandate that willor is intended to deprive women of con-traceptives (as noble an effort as that maybe.) The mandate has not yet been putinto place and women in the UnitedStates today have unprecedented accessto contraceptives, often freely availableat taxpayer expense. Planned Parenthoodhas built a billion dollar business on dis-pensing contraceptives with our tax dol-lars while building their abortion empire. There is no need for this mandate tomake contraceptives available for little tono cost for women.

Our efforts are not an attack on theperson of Mr. Obama, just the policiespertaining to this assault on our religiousliberties. And this is not an attack on thehealthcare law commonly referred to as“Obamacare.” It is indeed a response tothe violation of our religious freedomsguaranteed by the First Amendment.

applies to the new 40 Days for Life TwinCites campaign at Planned Parenthood.God granted victory at HealthPartners’Regions Hospital and the abortion unitthere closed on December 9, 2011.Unfortunately, the new Planned Parent-hood (PP) mega abortuary opened forbusiness December 20, 2011, just in timefor Christmas. This new PP facility islocated in the 16th largest metro are inthe United States, but it is the 3rd largestabortuary in the country (46,000 sq ft),killing pre-born infants up to the lastminute allowed, that is, up to 21 weeks, 6days. (At 22 weeks, Minnesota lawrequires, among other things, that abor-tions be committed in hospitals.)The location is different but the spirit

and the abortion practice are the same. Our 40 Days for Life tactic at the new siteis the same—prayer. We do not "wrestle"with the abortionist, the escorts, thevalets, the security guards, the adminis-trators or Sarah Stoesz, the director. Wehave and will interact with all of them, but our advantage will be prayer and theability to stand in spiritual warfare. To this end, the emphasis for the new

40 Days for Life Twin Cities campaign

has been focusing in on the personal par-ticipation of senior pastors to lead prayerfrom 3:00-3:30 p.m. daily. There hasbeen an increase in interest of non-Catholic pastors and African Americanpastors to hit the street in prayer, fastingand reflection. The following quotes arefrom pastors who have participated in 40Days for Life campaigns in their cities. The video is on the 40 Days for Life TwinCities website: www.40daysforlife.com/twincities (on the "Get Involved" page)."As a leader, I think we need to cham-

pion the cause. I just want my church tobe pro-life, period, and we are verystrong in our stand. We don't want to bepolitically correct; we want to do whatthe Bible says and fight for life."—Rev.Schell Johanssen, Living Branch Church,Colonial, Texas"The shepherd should do what he asks

the sheep to do and if he's not willing todo this, then how can he ask the sheep tofollow along and be pro-life as well?"—Fr. Tommy Chin, Parochial Vicar, St.Methodius, Shriner, Texas

Brian Gibson, Executive Director ofPro-Life Action Ministries, has stated,"When pastors participate, their church

will also participate." By the time you receive this, the 40

Days for Life Twin Cities Lenten cam-paign will be over, but the battle has notended. Pastors, leaders and laypersonsare needed to continue to pray and side-walk counsel not only in front of PP butat the four other surgical abortuaries inthe Twin Cities. The lives of children andthe spiritual, emotional and physicalwell-being of women and men headed tothe abortuaries are at stake. Just like atRegions Hospital, if we are not there, how will women and men, potential vic-tims of the wake of abortion, hear and seethe truth? The sad fact is they won't.But with pro-lifers standing in prayer

and sidewalk counseling, this will even-tually end. The abortuary closed atRegions and God will do the same atPlanned Parenthood. It's the "same dif-ference” with a different location but thesame battle. See you on the street.

Several WWHabortionists have previous disciplinaryhistories, including one who was respon-sible for a patient death. In February the Texas Medical Board

disciplined two of these abortionists.Alan Molson and Robert Hanson bothadmitted before the Board to conduct thatconstituted violations of the standards ofpatient care. Each was fined $3,000 andordered to take eight hours of continuingmedical education in risk management.

Can You Pray or SidewalkCounsel Here?

As indicated by the photo on page 1,the abortion clients have to walk past thesidewalk counselors at Whole Woman’s.However, typically there is only one side-walk counselor there (sometimes out-numbered by the pro-abortion escorts). Ifthere were two more sidewalk counselorsthere each day, we would have a betteropportunity to save lives because theywould be able to walk down the block orstand at the parking lot nearby to meet upwith the women before the escorts do.This would still leave one sidewalk coun-selor right at the doorway to speak withthe women who are dropped off there. This abortion center is located on 5th St.between Hennepin and Nicollet, a fewblocks from Target Field. Bus and lightrail stops are within a block or we cangive you advice on parking nearby. It isa very safe area during the day. Pleasecall (651) 771-1500 if you can help out, even just occasionally. Babies SavedSo far this year, 34 babies have been

documented saved through Pro-LifeAction Ministries, including 5 at theOrlando PP and 3 at the St. Paul PPduring the “40 Days for Life” cam-paigns at those locations! (As thisnewsletter went to press, “40 Days”was half over.) Here’s another recentstory written by a young mother:

My name is Llam; I am a 26-year-oldsingle mom with two children. My oldestboy Llariel is 2½ and my new baby boy,Leonardo, is 3 months old.

About a year ago I found out I was

pregnant. Already with Llariel and hav-ing a lot of trouble with my baby's daddy, the pregnancy just seemed like it wasmaking everything worse. My baby'sdaddy and I decided that an abortion wasthe right decision. I had everything set upfor a day, and that day came! I alreadyfelt not proud of what I was goingthrough. When I found the place, I sawpeople protesting against the abortion.By then I realized that this was the wrongthing to do!! I drove away, but some-thing inside me wanted to go back andmeet with some of the people in front ofthe abortion clinic. This is when I met

Allura (sidewalk counselor)! Shebecame a wonderful person in my life; Icall her my baby's Angel!! We talked, cried, talked and cried some more. Ilearned from her that pregnant womenhave help from different places. Shegave me hope!

Note—Allura keeps in touch with Llamand they have even gone out together tothe very abortion center (OWC) whereLlam was going to have the abortion. Butthis time she went to try to talk to womenand give them hope so they would walkaway from abortion too!

Amy Hagstrom Miller is the founder, president and CEO of the Whole Wo-man’s Health abortion chain, whichrecently bought the Midwest abortioncenter in Minneapolis. Is Your Doctor Involved in Abortions?Does Your Doctor PrescribeAbortifacient Birth Control?

Ask your own doctor if he/she doesabortions or refers for them, or pre-scribes abortifacients such as the Pill,Ortho Evra (the “patch”), the “shot,”Nuva-Ring, the “morning-after pill,”implants, or the IUD. All these methods(and others) can cause very early abor-tions by changing the lining of the uterusso that if breakthrough ovulation occurs(which it sometimes does) and a new lifeis conceived, the young human beingcannot attach to the uterine lining andtherefore he or she dies. These methodscan also be very dangerous, even deadly,to the woman. If you would like to go toa completely pro-life physician, we havea list of such doctors. Call (651) 771-1500, ext. 202.

Pray for . . . Listing AbortionistsA hallmark of our ministry has been

confronting the evil of abortion with thelove of Christ. This approach has includ-ed publicly identifying who the abortion-ists (and pro-abortion leaders) are. Thepractice of placing the names of abor-tionists in this newsletter has a twofoldpurpose: to ask for your heartfelt prayersfor the conversion of those listed and toinform you so that you are not patients ofthose committing abortions.

The criteria for placing someone onthe following list is that the individual isdirectly involved in committing abor-tions and that this can be reasonably ver-ified. We have resoundingly condemnedany sort of physical or psychologicalthreats to anyone involved in abortion. Our desire is for the love of God to per-meate the lives of those associated withabortion, that they will turn away fromthe harm they inflict and become follow-ers of Christ as so many before themhave done. Please pray for the followingabortionists:
