PROJECTS AND VISIONS CT Market overview Industrial Parks in Europe CHEMIE TECHNIK regularly publishes overviews of industrial Parks in Europe. Our latest overview nearly 60 parks focussing on the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries.
Infrareal The six owners of Marburg-based site service provider Pharmaserv have an-nounced their intention to acquire more industrial parks in Germany. The Manage-ment-Holding Infrareal GmbH, Marburg, was founded specifically for this purpose in August 2008. It is to manage and control site operating companies. Infrareal AG, Zü-rich, is to aid further development of the group. “Infrareal will thus become the first group of site operating companies which is independent of special interests such as energy supply, waste management, facil-ity management or engineering”, was how Markus Schwerzmann, one of the six owners, outlined the concept. Core busi-ness of this “integrated site management”
INDUSTRIAL PARKS
Pharmaserv Owners Plan to Operate More Sites
model is holistic site management. Infra-real is to establish a permanent place as leading site operating group in the con-stantly moving industrial park market
with Pharmaserv as reference. The site op-erators see potential for takeovers pri-marily among the 30 or so multi-user sites in Germany. www.infrareal.de

Investment Boom at Hürth
Hanau Evonik Industries, Essen, is planning to merge the sites operated by its sub-sidiary company Industriepark Wolfgang GmbH (IPW) at Frankfurt and Hanau. This means that it will give up its Weißfrauen-straße site in Frankfurt and relocate to Hanau Wolfgang between 2010 and 2015. Synergies in site service, strengthening of important control functions of business areas, and the future presence of essential service divisions of Evonik Industries will safeguard the future of the site. “We are pleased to be able to realise these benefits without any loss of jobs”, comments Ste-fan Kroll, managing director of IPW. The reason for this concentration on what will be a single site at Wolfgang industrial park lies primarily in a drastic increase in the lease rate at the Weißfrauenstraße lo-cation as of 2015. www.ipw-rheinmain.de
Chemiepark Knapsack The Knapsack chemical site is currently enjoying an in-vestment boom. A total of Euro 800m was invested in 2007. As a result, a new water line as well as a gas and steam power plant are now in operation. The area occupied by Knapsack Cargo was also enlarged. This year investment decisions to the tune of Evonik Industries Boosts

Euro 100m have been made, for example by Bayer Cropscience, Vinnolit, and Infra-serv Knapsack. The new substitute fuel power plant came into operation in June. Planning security for the site is assured by the extension of water rights for another ten years. www.infraserv-knapsack.de
New world-scale plant for complexing agent Ludwigshafen BASF is investing in the pro-duction of its sustainable complexing agent Trilon M. The construction of a new world-scale plant at Ludwigshafen, Ger-many, has begun. Upon completion in
2010, BASF will have a worldwide capacity of 120,000 tonnes a year for its complete range of complexing agents. www.basf.com
Annual Silicon Production to Reach 1 800 t
Bitterfeld PV Silicium, Erfurt, is investing Euro 80m in construction of a solar-grade silicon production plant at Chemiepark Bitterfeld which is to come into operation stepwise, starting in the autumn of 2008. As of spring 2009 the company plans to produce 900 t/a of silicon, and 1 800 t/a by 2011. Hitherto the company has pur-chased solar-grade silicon, which it has fused and sawn into thin slices for produc-tion of solar cells. Operation f the plant will create 80 new jobs. www.chemiepark.de

Chemtrix chooses Chemelot for the development of microreactor systems Geelen Chemtrix will be developing revol-utionary microreactor systems, which use chip technology, at the Chemelot Research & Business campus in Geleen. As well as being much smaller than conventional batch reactors, the equipment is also safer and more efficient. Chemtrix develops production units with built-in microreac-
tors. These microreactors, which are the size of a SIM card, are based on chip tech-nology. In these microreactors, small liquid flows produce a continuous chemical reac-tion. A large number of these chips are combined to form a production unit which is suitable for industrial use. The micro-reactors themselves are produced by Lion-
ix, which is linked to the Mesa+ institute of the University of Twente (NL). Chemtrix is concentrating on scaling production up to valuable production units. In the long term, fine chemicals and pharmaceutical products will have to be produced on an in-dustrial scale, i.e. at up to 1000 kg/hour. www.chemelot.nl

New Spherical Gas Tanks
Marl Infracor Logistik is currently building a new spherical tank for liquefied gases at Marl. Construction of the tank was made necessary by the Evonik Oxeno Project 2-PH requiring storage and handling of ad-ditional hydrocarbons. With a volume of some 8 800 m3 and a diameter of about 25 m, the sphere will be the largest on the site. It is scheduled to become operational in the first quarter of 2009. The sheer size of the sphere places rigorous demands on constructional engineering. www.infracor.de

Currenta Modernising Wastewater Treatment
Leverkusen Currenta is investing Euro 15m in modernisation of basin biology at the Leverkusen-Bürrig waste management centre. This expansion has the goal of raising the efficiency and cost effective-ness of processes involved in the last stage of wastewater treatment and of reducing the proportion of inorganic nitrogen com-pounds by at least 40 %. Work on the sec-ond stage is proceeding rapidly. Concrete building work is scheduled to be com-pleted by February 2009. On completion of subsequent technical installation work, test phase operation is due to start in Au-gust/September 2009. In addition, No-vember 2009 will see the start of con-struction of a further aftertreatment unit, bring the total up to four (amount in-vested: Euro 2m). The overall modern-isation and expansion project is due to start operation in late 2010. Currenta is also investing Euro 4.5m in restoration of the quay wall. 35 new mooring facilities will in future facilitate berthing in the CHEMPARK harbour. www.currenta.de

Frankfurt Industriepark Höchst strengthens its position as a logistics hub. In September 2008 Infraserv Höchst put the EUR-44-million Logistics Center into operation. The NLC at Industriepark Höchst is the largest logistics facility for chemical products in Hesse with approxi-mately 70,000 pallet positions. The state-of-the-art, fully automated high-bay warehouse streamlines workflows and helps Infraserv Logistics compete more successfully in a highly contested market. The New Logistics Center, equipped with cutting-edge materials-handling equip-ment and intelligent IT solutions, has the potential to boost efficiency significantly – and ensure an optimum level of safety. That is a crucial point, since it allows Infra-serv Logistics to store almost all its cus-tomers' chemical products in accordance with the German Chemical Industry As-sociation's (VCI) storage guidelines. www.infraserv.com

energy / disposal specialities Leverkusen: Investments Topping Euro 500m
Chempark “Totalling over half a billion euros, investments as well as expenditure on maintenance remain at a constant high level”, was the positive balance drawn for the Leverkusen site by Dr. Ernst Grigat, Di-rector of Chempark industrial park. “All the investments so far announced remain on plan.” Chempark consists of the three sites Leverkusen, Dormagen, and Krefeld-Uerd-ingen. One of the strengths of a chemical park is the is the interconnected system of products. Examples of current invest-ments at Chempark: Lanxess is investing some Euro 35m in its Leverkusen plant network for production of basic chemicals. In early 2008 Saltigo commissioned a multifunctional facility for active ingredi-ents and intermediates, involving an in-vestment of Euro 10m. Momentive Performance Materials is ex-panding one of its three global research operations. nkt cables is building Europe’s most modern cable works for about Euro 120m. www.chempark.de

Kalle-Albert Industrial Park Cel-ebrates its 150th Anniversary
Wiesbaden Kalle-Albert Industrial Park celebrated its 150th anniversary in October 2008. On October 1, 1858 Heinrich Albert founded a glue and fertiliser factory at Bie-brich. The factory relocated to Amöneburg three years later. Heinrich Albert was a pharmacist and took his degree under the chemist Justus von Liebig, who estab-lished the theoretical basis of mineral fer-tilisation. On the occasion of the jubilee, Dr. Helmut Müller, Chief Burgomaster of the state capital Wiesbaden, awarded In-fraServ Wiesbaden the Golden Badge of the City. Rotterdam C.GEN submitted a preliminary memorandum for the purpose of a licence application and the Environmental Impact Assessment for a hydrogen power plant. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is looking into the possibility of siting the power plant at a location between the EECV coal/ore terminal and the Lion Gas LNG ter-minal in the Europoort. This type of plant was recently recommended by the Energy Council in preference to direct burning in conventional coal-fired power stations, due to the simpler and cheaper method of CO2 capture and storage. The Energy Council sees coal as a good strategic alter-native to generating energy via gas and oil. C.GEN itself develops and invests in envi-ronmentally friendly electricity gener-ation. The company belongs to the same group as Cobelfret. Cobelfret is a large lo-gistics concern with operations world-wide, including the Netherlands, with branches in Rotterdam and Vlissingen. Co-belfret is active in shipping and port ter-minals, has 1680 employees and a turn-over of almost €1 billion. www.portofrotterdam.com
orandum of Understanding with Delta Energie B.V, a division of multi-utility com-pany Delta N.V., for capacity rights in Lion-Gas Terminal in Rotterdam. Delta N.V. and global LNG terminal developer 4Gas sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for capacity rights in 4Gas’ LionGas LNG terminal in the Port of Rotterdam. The MoU assigns capacity rights to 1 billion cubic metres per annum (bcma) to be pur-chased by October 2012. The LionGas LNG import and regasification terminal will be based at the mouth of the Port of Rotter-dam (Maasvlakte area) with an initial an-nual throughput capacity of 9 billion cubic metres of which now 2/3 is contracted. Ear-lier the energy suppliers Eneco (The Ne-therlands) and Energie Baden-Württem-berg (Germany). The site is sufficiently large and has permits for expansion to 18 bcma capacity. The project has received all its environmental and construction per-mits. www.portofrotterdam.com

Biomethane from Höchst Green light for the biomethane-upgrading plant in Industriepark Höchst: Infraserv Höchst and Mainova AG signed the letter of intent.
Frankfurt Infraserv Höchst and Mainova EnergieDienste intend to establish a pro-ject company to build a biomethane-up-grading plant in Industriepark Höchst. „Re-newable energy sources are an integral part of Infraserv Höchst's energy strat-egy,“ said Roland Mohr, COO of Infraserv Höchst. The companies intend to feed biomethane into the public network using technology that Infraserv developed to produce biogas from industrial sludge. The planned facility is also a future-looking project for Joachim Zientek, Member of
the Management Board of Mainova: „Never before has anyone built a facility of this size with this kind of bio-technology in Germany. “ Infraserv Höchst will con-tribute not only the raw biogas but also know-how in large-plant operations, while Mainova EnergieDienste will provide ex-pertise in conditioning biomethane and feeding it into the public network. Some of the plant's raw-biogas output will be up-graded to pipeline-quality biomethane in a new plant and fed into the public net-work in the future. Up to 80,000 mega-watt hours (MWh) of biomethane will help reduce the need for conventional natural gas. Both partners will invest around EUR 5 million in the new plant and the necessary infrastructure. The new plant is scheduled to come on line in 2011. infraserv.de
Framework Cooperation Agreement Signed Infracor and InfraServ Knapsack The two site operators and service providers Infra-cor, Marl, and InfraServ Knapsack (ISK) have concluded a framework agreement concerning future cooperation. The goal is to intensify collaboration between ISK and Infracor in the areas of method devel-opment in maintenance and plant services as well as utilisation of the other party’s engineering and technical resources on a case-by-case basis. The two partners plan to exchange information about method developments in the field of maintenance and plant services, jointly promote devel-opments, and provide the necessary re-sources. This concerns developments both in the equipment sector and in processes and methods. According to the agree-ment, the two companies will provide each other mutual help on a case-by-case basis. www.infracor.de www.infraserv-knapsack.de
