Projectile Motion

• Objects that are thrown or launched into the air and are subject to gravity are called projectiles

• Path of a projectile is called a parabola–With air resistance, the path is not a

parabola– Text keeps the horizontal velocity of a

projectile constant (doesn’t account for air resistance)

Vertical Motion of a Projectile

• Put equations on page 100 onto formula sheet

• Used to calculate the vertical component of final velocity and the vertical displacement–Can use 3rd equation to solve for time (see

page 101)

Horizontal Motion of a Projectile

• Put equations on page 100 onto formula sheet– The horizontal component of velocity is

constant– The horizontal displacement can be

calculated by multiplying the horizontal velocity by the time the object is in the air
