LORD & TAYLOR - NEW YORK, NY PROJECT SPOTLIGHT
MX LUMINAIRES PROVIDE TAILOR MADE SOLUTION FOR RETAIL LEADERLord & Taylor’s 5th Ave. store receives a custom-built upgrade to shine new light on displays
“We found out from the purchasing agent that
the original lighting specifications called for
another manufacturer’s product,” says Tracy.
“But we knew that Intense Lighting’s great
customer service and fast product delivery
would keep this job on schedule. These
factors, combined with the MX line’s versatility
and flexibility, made the luminaires the ideal
solution for Lord & Taylor.”
Laughead-Riese agrees, “What made this
project so special is that the MX trim pieces
had to be modified in order to work in the
existing footprint.

“The existing lights were 12” x 12” Halogen
PAR38 pull downs that were already
re-lamped with screw-in LED lamps.
Unfortunately, they were not providing the
light levels we wanted for the merchandise
presentations. We realized the best solution
for our needs would be to replace them with
Intense Lighting’s MX 4-head luminaires.”
According to Chris Tracy, a business
development and technical sales
representative with NESCO/Needham Lighting
and Electrical Solutions in Massachusetts, his
company has a long history working with Lord
& Taylor.
A recent remodel of Lord & Taylor’s 5th
Avenue department store in New York City
included a revitalization of the interior design
and various architectural elements along with
updated luminaires. To achieve the desired
look, a custom-made solution from Intense
Lighting’s MX Line proved to be exactly
what the project required, according to Amy
Laughead-Riese, a lighting designer and
principal of 37 Volts Light Studio in Cincinnati,
Ohio who specified the MX 4-head luminaire.
“The client originally asked for a retrofit
solution so as to preserve the existing plaster
ceilings,” says Laughead-Riese.

Intense Lighting’s Sales Manager got involved
to help us create a propriety retrofit solution,
which basically became a custom-made fix,
allowing the trim pieces to fit into the existing
square configuration.”
Intense Lighting’s product development team
was able to design, manufacture and deliver
more than 200 luminaires for this project in
less than three weeks from start to finish.
“I’m incredibly pleased with the outcome,”
says Laughead-Riese. “Not only was Intense
Lighting able to modify their luminaire and
make it work in an existing application, but
we got brand new lighting that produces
double the lumen output with four heads in
one fixture, so we could highlight more of the
displays.
Thanks to Intense Lighting’s cost effective and
speedy resolution of our lighting challenges,
combined with customer service by Intense
& NESCO, Lord & Taylor plans to expand that
solution to other floors within its 5th Avenue
store.”
Laughead-Riese adds, “As a specifier, there is
an incredible amount of value in knowing that
I can count on Intense Lighting’s unique ability
to respond quickly and modify products for
special applications when needed.”
