Semi-Cooked Food:Semi Cooked Food is also known as

Convenience Food, Tertiary

processed food & Ready to Cook food.

They are commercially prepared food designed for

ease of consumption.

Products designated as convenience

foods are often

prepared food stuffs that can be sold as hot, ready-to-eat dishes; shelf-

stable products; or refrigerated,

frozen products, or

dry mixes that require minimal

preparation.

Products such as candy, fast

food; processed

meals, meats and cheeses;

canned products such as soups and pasta dishes

all come under

Convenience Food.

Types of Processed Foods:

Fully processed convenience foods/ Ready to Eat foods:

These come in packets which have to be heated and are ready to be served. They are either packed in pouches or vacuum sealed packages.

Semi processed convenience foods:

Products that require some cooking procedures to give finishing touches by the customer are known as Semi Processed foods. One minute noodles, idli mixes, gulab jamun mixes, upma mixes, soup mixes, cake and baked products mixes are examples.

Dehydrated foods:

Products that have been subjected to dehydration constitute this group. Powders for making south Indian dishes, soups, dhokla and bakery products along with cakes are all dehydrated food products.

Canned foods :

These products keep in good condition for a long time, have good shelf life and can be stored easily. Meat products, fish, fruits, vegetables and pulses all come in the form of cans. Fruit juices, soups and other fluid products are also canned.

Sun dried products:

Food products made by drying under the sun are Sun dried products. Examples: Papads, vegetables, fruits, green chillies, chips, fish and kachris have been sun dried to make them last long and save time of the home maker. These products are tasty and require minimum cooking time.

Frozen Food Products:

These are food preserved by Freezing. Food is persevered from the time it is prepared to the time it is eaten. Freezing food slows down decomposition by turning water to ice, making it unavailable for most bacterial growth.

Examples: Pre-cooked chicken nuggets/fingers, Lean/Hot Pockets , Frozen Vegetables, French Fries etc.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Processed Foods:

Advantage of processed foods· Reduces the bacteria thus decreasing the risk infection.· Stays fresh for a longer time.· Makes appealing to consumer· Encourages more people to patronize the products such as milk and other

processed food· Benefits children who are suffering from rickets and other diseases.

Disadvantages of processed foods· Processed food can lead to disease of the stomach.· Children become constipated because there is no fiber in their diet.· It does not promote chewing.· Not all processed food is good for consumption because their days/period for

consumptions are numbered.

Introduction OF “MTR”:•MTR Foods Private Limited is amongst the top five processed food manufacturers in India. MTR Foods Pvt Ltd. was formerly known as Brahmanara Coffee Club and changed its name to MTR Foods Pvt Ltd. in 1951. The company was founded in 1924 and is based in Bangalore, India.

•They manufacture, market and export a wide range of packaged foods to global markets that include USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, UAE, Japan and Oman.

•Their products include ready-to-eat curries and rice, ready-to-cook gravies, frozen foods, ice cream, instant snack and dessert mixes, spices and a variety of accompaniments like pickles and papads.

Competitors:

ITC made its entry into the branded & packaged Foods business in August 2001 with the launch of the Kitchens of India brand. Kitchen of India offers Ready to cook Meals, Semi- cooked meals, Varieties of Chutneys, Desserts, Conserve (Special Jams).

Convenience and Authentic taste now has a new name with the Aashirvaad Instant Mix range. Aashirvaad launched their Ready to Cook Meals in March '06, which includes Gulab Jamun, Rava Idli, Rice Idli and Rice Dosa. Aashirvaad Instant Mixes, Semi Cooked Meals which promise the discerning Indian homemaker perfect tasting dishes, consistently.

MTR Foods has launched a new advertising campaign for its line of breakfast mixes, focusing on their south Indian breakfast offerings. The commercial depicts a typical Indian family early in the morning, were the wife/mother ask family members what they would like to have for breakfast and everyone asks for something different. Unfazed, the woman comfortably smiles and is ready to prepare what her family wants using the Instant Mixes within no time.
