greater significance in bringing tourist to Kerala.

The conceptual and operational framework of Ayurveda is wide

enough to include all that is essential to make a man healthy and happy. It

includes the study of right conduct (dharma), which is necessary for the healthy

growth of society in which the man lives. Further it deals with the philosophical

aspect of life, the knowledge of which contributes greatly to the comfort and

happiness of all human beings. Ayurveda philosophically understands the

The marketing section of ARYA VAIDYA SALA is in Kottakkal itself. The

finished goods, both the manufacturing unit are stored and distributed from

here. This department is mainly done in Kottakkal store department and

coordinates all the products from both the factory and in the warehouse.

There is no separate segment for the firm’s products, as the products are

Ayurvedic medicines and all who needs them are the users. The product attracts

more customers due to less chance of side effects when compared to Allopathic

medicines.

Functions of Production or Manufacturing department

The manufacturing activity takes place at three factories. These factories

operate on manufacturing license issued by the Drugs Controller of the state and

both possess GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certificate issued by the

government.

The important feature of the three factories is the fact that the basic principles

and practices of medicine manufacture are still based on the specifications in the

classical text books. At the same time, extensive mechanization has taken place

as a necessary consequence of adapting industrial methods. This change is

essential when scaled up and bulk level production of medicines becomes

necessary.

All the processing activities are done in pharmaceutical grade stainless steel

vessels. There are several electro mechanical equipments which are employed

for achieving efficiency in production. Major areas where mechanization has

been incorporated are: Fire wood has completely been replaced by boiler

generated steam for boiling purpose.

Major functions like disintegration, sifting, filtration, concentration,

incineration, compression, filling, blistering, packing, etc are done with the aid

of heavy equipments.

The introduction of modern dosage presentation forms of tablets and capsules

has also necessitated the incorporation of modern pharmaceutical machinery

like punching machine, mass mixer, granulator, drier, blender, encapsulation

equipment, blister packing machine, etc.

34

Page 35: Project Report

The factories work round the clock in three shifts. More than 600 people are

engaged in manufacturing activity including workmen, supervisors, clerical and

support staffs. Every section of the two factories is managed by qualified and

trained physicians under the overall control of a Factory Manager and

Production Manager.

The production activity is scheduled by the Production Planning Unit. It draws

up annual / monthly / weekly / daily production schedule by taking into account

the requirement of the Factory managers and Finance department.

Arya Vaidya Sala manufactures more than 530 classical formulations which

fall in the following nine categories:

1. Arishta / Asava (Fermented formulation)

2. Bhasma (Calicinated drug)

3. Churna (Powdered herb)

4. Ghrita (Ghee based)

5. Gulika (Pill)

6. Kashaya (Decoction)

7. Leha (Electuary)

8. Rasakriya (Collerium)

9. Taila / Kuzhampu (Oil based)

These formulations are adapted from several classical text books. Their

manufacture and marketing are licensed by the Drug Controlling Authority of

the State Government. The manufacturing activity is also granted GMP

certification by the government.

35

Page 36: Project Report

The principles and methodology of medicine preparation are based on classical

tenets. However modern technological and industrial methods are adapted to

possible extent. For example, basic cooking is now done in pharmaceutical

grade stainless steel vessels by using steam as the source of heat. Vacuum

evaporation is employed for concentration step. Several electro mechanical

equipments are used for size reduction of herbs, pulverization, sifting, grinding,

filling and packing, etc. Similarly, Quality assurance procedures have also been

adapted considerably from the methods of modern chemistry and physics.

On an average, 20-30 herbs are used in the preparation of a medicine. There are

rare instances when more than a hundred herbs go into the making of a

medicine. There are others which take months to get prepared as a lot.

Ayurvedic medicine manufacture the material intensive, time intensive, labour

intensive and also water intensive. They form the main cost factors.

36

4. Packaging of materials

The Indian System of Medicine and also the Homoeopathy system

predominantly use raw materials in most of their preparations and formulation.

The credibility of these systems, thus mainly depends upon the use of genuine

raw materials in the manufacture of drugs of these systems. In all, about 1100

medicinal plants are estimated to find regular use in the Indian System of

Medicine (ISM). As a result of continuous exploitation of these plants in forests

and absence of regular developmental programs in the forestry sector, a number

of species have become vulnerable to extinction due to loss of population and

also unscrupulous collection. This also leads to a gradual erosion and ultimate

loss of vulnerable genetic diversities of these economic plants in India.

The major functions of material / purchase department is as follows:

Procurement of raw materials and packing

It means the collection and store of raw materials from various sources after that

it will be needed to the production process at that time, to allow suitable

quantity of items to production.

38

Page 39: Project Report

Supplier or vendor development

The purchase field of ARYA VAIDYA SALA is very wide, so there is a focus

to supplier or vendor development programs in the institution. They provide

better chance for the vendor to make their products and to evaluate the

availability of raw materials to the institution. It clearly helps the institution

availability or chances of getting the materials.

Storage

For storage of all resource such as raw materials and finished goods in the

organization, ARYA VAIDYA SALA has got a large and high storage area.

Finished goods have to be stored fully secure all these are important function of

this department.

Printing and Stationary

This department handles the purchase of printing and stationary items. These

items are kept to the suitable stores and when needed, it will be handed over to

the proper departments.

Packing Materials

It does the purchase of all the packing materials from suitable source and is kept

to stores and whenever it is needed then to forward the materials to marketing

department. All these activities are clearly and carefully done by the materials

or purchase department of the institution. In Ayurveda 70% of input materials is

from the plant kingdom, 20% is from the animal kingdom and 5 % of metals

such as gold, silver, iron, etc and 5% of minerals such as Sulphur, Calcium

Carbonate, etc.

39

Page 40: Project Report

Arya Vaidya Sala uses more than 4000 tons of raw materials (about 600 items)

in a year to produce 530 formulations for the market. A rough estimate of

annual consumption by ARYA VAIDYA SALA:

1. Milk - 13 lakh liter

2. Oil - 5 lakh liter

3. Ghee - 180 ton

4. Honey - 290 ton

5. Jaggery - 750 ton

6. Saffron - 856 kg

ARYA VAIDYA SALA have always been aware of the need for constant

scientific research for the development of an Ayurveda, taking advantage of

modern scientific know-how and have established an R & D wing. Apart from

quality control of raw materials and end products, this wing is engaged in

research work for modernization of production, always keeping in view the

quality and cost factors and general convenience of the public.

Arya Vaidya Sala has signed a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with

CSIR of the government of India to undertake research on Ayurvedic

science.

It has also joint programs with department of science and technology and

Indian Institute of Chemical Technology to evolve modern standards for

materials, process and products.

Research on medicinal plants and their extension to fields are also carried

on.

Recently, Arya Vaidya Sala has embarked on a venture of modernizing some

of the conventional dosage forms by converting them into more user

compliant forms.

Example

a) Bitter tasting liquid Kashayam into the more convenient form of tablet.

b) Incinerated Bhasmam into more reliable and accurate dosage form of

capsule.

c) Messy and greasy Tailam into more convenient and less greasy form of

gel.

All these modifications are attempted only after confirming about retaining

the original quality of the traditional medicines by conducting a series of

formulation and clinical studies.

48

Page 49: Project Report

Another fundamental change brought about by the Arya Vaidya Sala was the

standardization of medical treatment. Earlier, the dosage of medicines was

determined in accordance with the demands of specific individual. P.S.

Varrier followed allopathic practice in fixing a prescribed amount of the

medicine. This made the introduction of packaged, ready to use medicines,

with a long shelf life, possible.

Clinical Research

A clinical research ward with that offers treatments to patients suffering

from the peptic ulcer disease, ward run under the Central Council for

research in Ayurveda and expenses of the patients are met by ARYA

VAIDYA SALA.

A clinical research unit that aims to develop new method and procedures for

dealing with debilitating ailments, such as cancer and rheumatoid arthritis.

A collabourating research had been also launched by ARYA VAIDYA

SALA in association with Swamy Vivekananda Medical Mission, Muttin at

Wayanad. The research studies efficacy (Capacity or power to produce a

desired effect) of Ayuvedic medicines in the treatment of sickle cell anemia,

a disease commonly found in section of tribal population in the Wayanad

district.

Today, as an advanced centre of medicine and health care, Arya Vaidya Sala

is engaged in research for widening the horizons of Ayurvedic knowledge.

There are specific programs engaged in research on peptic ulcer, alleviation

of pain in cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, palliative care and gastroenteritis.

Medicinal Plant Research

A significant proportion of the ingredients in Ayurvedic medicines come from

plants, many of these from the mountains of the Himalayan ranges where this

49

Page 50: Project Report

system was initially developed. Increasing demand and deforestation has made

many of these plants rare. Arya Vaidya Sala, therefore, maintains an herbal

garden in Kottakkal. The garden had been initiated by P.S. Varrier himself

immediately after the shifting of the Arya Vaidya Pathsala to Kottakkal so as to

familiarize students with medicinal plants. At present, the garden at Kottakkal

has about a thousand medicinal plants including some rare species; some

species even from the North Indian Hills. The garden provides information and

material support to the academicians as well as students. ARYA VAIDYA

SALA also owns estates of medicinal herbs in Kanhirappuzha and Kottappuram

in Palakkad district.

ARYA VAIDYA SALA has participated in an International Development

Research Centre Project for the conservation of endangered medical plant

species. It is also involved in an ongoing TATA – Aided project in medical

plant research.

The Ayurvedic medicine industry is critically dependent upon uninterrupted

supply of raw herbs. It means that medical plants of right quality should be

available in right quantity for the sustained growth of Ayurvedic medicine

industry. It is a fact that the expanding Ayurvedic industry has had an impact on

the raw herb supply position.

Arya Vaidya Sala has recognized the importance of the natural resource base

and has taken comprehensive steps for strengthening this unique resource base.

These steps include cultivation of threatened medical plants, promotion of

cultivation, supply of seedling efforts for cultivation and trade in medicinal

plants.

Several annual (Completing its life cycle within a year), biennial (Having a life

cycle lasting two seasons) and perennial (Lasting three seasons or more) herbal

51

Page 52: Project Report

species are cultivated there for in-house consumption. There are about a

hundred other medicinal plants which are cultivated for supplementing

production needs.

The skills generated in the field of medicinal plant cultivation are transferred to

individual farmers and NGOs through a verity of extension and education

programs. With the involvement of the expertise available with the Centre for

Medicinal Plants Research, various extension activities are conducted at

Panchayat and District levels.

Scarcity of water is a major problem while expanding cultivation activities.

Apart from attempting to identify new sub soil water sources, concerted efforts

are made to conserve ground water by setting up ponds and by recycling

effluent water discharged from the medicine manufacturing activity.

Initiatives in the plant sector

Strengthening the critical resource base of medicinal plant has always been

considered an important task by Arya Vaidya Sala. The efforts in this regard

have been in five major directions, via, maintaining of demonstration garden,

cultivation in natural estates, undertaking collaborative research, collating and

publishing reference material and undertaking extension work.

An important activity has been in the area of collating and compiling

information of the character and use of medicinal plants as found in classical

and modern texts.

One of the major research projects, entitled “Medicinal Plants (India)

Project”, was undertaken in collaboration with the International

Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada

52

Page 53: Project Report

A program to set up a Germ Plasma Bank of medicinal plants has recently

been initiated with the support of the Department of Biotechnology of the

Government of India. The major components of this program are a field gene

bank, an in-vitro bank, a seed bank, digital data base, etc

Twenty endangered medicinal plants of the Western Ghats were studied

under this project with respect to their pharmacokinetics, propagation and

distribution.

The Publication department of Arya Vaidya Sala is actively involved in

publication of modern and traditional literature related to Ayurveda. It has its

own editorial and production wings with DTP capability.

P. S. Varier himself had recognized the importance of bringing out authentic

literature for the growth of Ayurveda. Such activity served essentially two

purposes. The first is to strengthen Ayurvedic knowledge base by bringing out

authentic texts. The target readers were professionals and students.

His publication of Sanskrit classics Ashtangahridayam and Brihacchariram are

examples of this aspect. Secondly, he tried to publish reliable reading material

for the lay-public on health related topics. He wanted to teach the people about

the do’s and don’ts of health care. In both these activities his prime aim was to

strengthen Ayurveda and to propagate the Ayurvedic tradition.

The present Publication department of Arya Vaidya Sala continues to follow the

same path. The Kottakkal Ayurvedic series of books include major works in

Sanskrit, English and Malayalam. Professionals and students find them useful as

reference manuals. Popular Ayurvedic series includes many publications of

health matters to provide useful information for the common reader.

Aryavaidyan, an english quarterly being published by Arya Vaidya Sala,

provides a platform for publication of research papers in subjects related to

Ayurveda.
