PART  1THE

MECHANICSOF  RECYCLING

THE  PROBLEM

Page 6: Project recycling presentation revision

The  green  and  yellow  bins  suit  western  countries  but  are  impractical  for  use  here  in  Thailand.  In  addition  the  collection  system  fails  as  can  be  noted  by  overflowing  trash,  requiring  manual  separation  by  the  Sa  Leng or  it  just  ends  up  in  landfill.

NO  STRUCTURED  RECYCLING  COLLECTION

SYSTEM  WITHIN  THE  INFORMAL

SECTOR

Many  microsystems  in  place  that

create  organised  chaos

The  problem  may  seem

overwhelming  to  fix

Recycling  collection  has

been  encouraged  as  a

free  for  all

The  Saleng may  feel

they  cannot  make  changeor  organise  themselves

MOST  BIN  DESIGNS  DO  NOT  SUIT  THE  THAI  URBAN  LANDSCAPE

80%  of  all  recycling  is

collected  within  the  informal  sector  &  most

people  don’t  trust  the    Sa  Leng

Each  individual  business  or  home

decides  for  themselves  what,  when  &  how  to

recycle

Actual  education  on  recycled  is  very

limited

While   there  are  calls  for  a

recycling  system,  the  government  remains  silenton  regulation

Page 10: Project recycling presentation revision

Our  approach  is  to  work  from  the  bottom-‐up

What  others  think  are  the  problems

ü Whilst  many  see  education  as  the  main  issue,  education  alone  without  a  structured  waste  collection  program  will  not  work.

ü Whilst  industry  believes  government  regulation  is  one  answer,  that  too  will  be  difficult  to  enforce  unless  there  is  a  structured  collection  program  in  place

More  materials  can  be  recycled  if  there  are  both  better  bin  designs  for  behaviour  change  and  a  structured  collection  system.

Page 11: Project recycling presentation revision

PART  2THE

MECHANICSOF  RECYCLING

THE  SOLUTION

Page 12: Project recycling presentation revision

ü Increase  recycling  from  20%  to  50%  within  10  years  – not  just  the  easy  recyclables…

ü Put  a  recycling  bin  in  every  household,  business  and  light  industry  in  Thailand…

ü Which  will  reduce  landfill

ü Increase   incomes  for  all  those  who  buy  and  sell  recycling  materials  (including  households)

ü Support  government   regulation

ü Government  regulations  can  be  implemented  within  an  existing    workable  system  and  the  Sa  Leng  are  not  marginalised  even  further.

Our  Aim

Except  there  may  be  up  to  5  million  businesses  once  we  count  the  informal  economy

“Design isn’t about objects,

it’s about every day decisions”

1st YearDesigns  -‐ Bin  and  Collection  Systems

üCollaborate  with  University  Design  Faculties  to  research,  design  and  test  prototypes  of  bin  designs  that  suit  the  Thai  residential  and  SME  sector.

üThe  Industrial  Design  Faculty  of  Suan  Sunandha  Rajabhat  University  will  manage  residential  designs

ü 2nd University  will  manage  Light  Industry  and  Convenience  Stores

üAlongside  the  new  bin  designs,  acceptance  testing  of  a  structured  collection  system  will  be  conducted  with  a  select  group  of  Sa  Leng  within  the  trial  area.  Here  we  can  also  ascertain  what  of  support  systems  need  to  be  put  into  place  for  the  Sa  Leng

Page 17: Project recycling presentation revision

Awareness  and  communication  channelsü Create  brand  -‐ “Keep  Thailand  Beautiful”ü Create  website  – www.keepthailandbeautiful.orgü Establish  social  media  platformsü Newsletter  ü Create  logo

To establish an easily identifiable wholly Thai program toenable education, branding, website, pamphlets & recyclingcontainers in later stages.

Page 18: Project recycling presentation revision

Identify  &  Build  in  Support  Systems  ü Develop  new  business  models  as  incentive  for  the  Sa  Leng  to  drive

the  change• Bring  in  NGO’s  and  other  organisations  to  educate  the  Sa  Leng

ü Identify  new  work  opportunities   for  the  Sa  Leng• By  virtue  of  a  structured  collection  system  some  Sa  Lengmay  need  to  be

transitioned  to  other  new  work  opportunities  that  will  arise.

These images show how local residents in Petchburi, a town approximately 160km south ofBangkok, have used old paint containers for the Sa Leng to collect recycling materials in a moreefficient way.

THE  EXECUTION

Page 21: Project recycling presentation revision

The  Sa  Leng  will  be  the  agents  of  change  in  this

project

No.  1

Page 22: Project recycling presentation revision

They  will  create,  build  and  operate  the  recycling  of  trash  as  a  business

with  a  territory,  assets  &  a  customer  base.

No.  2

Page 23: Project recycling presentation revision

They  will  offer  their  customers  a  choice  of  recycling  containers  according  to  their

customer’s  circumstances  &  requirements.

No.  3

Page 24: Project recycling presentation revision

The  Sa  Leng  will  educate  (it  is  called  marketing),  their  customers  in  order  to  grow  their  business.

WHERE  DO  WE  START?

Page 37: Project recycling presentation revision

If  I  could  wish  for  something,  I  would  wish

for  neither  wealth  nor  power, but  the  passion  for  possibility.

I  would  wish  only  for  an  eye  which,  eternally  young  eternally  burnswith  the  longing  to  see  possibility
