The Jolson Story (18 July) from 1946 chronicles the life of famed performer Al Jolson (starring Larry Parks and Evelyn Keyes) and is one of the most successful films Bill has presented on Foxtel. “It gets an enormous following. It’s an extraordinary motion picture.” Round out the month with 1941’s Belle Starr (25 July) with Gene Tierney as the eponymous outlaw queen and Randolph Scott and Dana Andrews as her suitors. It’s another example of the “outstanding, exciting and innovative” movies of Hollywood’s golden age, says Bill. Settle in for a month of classic Saturday nights beginning with Academy Award winner, 1961’s Judgment at Nuremberg (4 July) Based on the historic trials, it stars Spencer Tracy, Judy Garland and Oscar winner Maximilian Schell and is a film not to be missed, says Bill. “Some films can change your life if they have something to say that affects you deeply and I think Judgment at Nuremberg is that kind of film, it’s that potent.”
