Benefits of Phase 1
• Production of clean electricity – Solar Panels: 1 MWh/yr– Wind Turbine: 2.5 MWh/yr– Combined total would supply a
single family home with electricity for 4 months
– A distinctive landmark that raises the curiosity of young people and passers-by.

In addition…
A symbol of the commitment to concrete action towards
reducing our carbon footprint at school and at home, and to make ecology a priority in our
community.

Influence at Gisèle-Lalonde HS
• Specialized Environmental Program • Diploma recognized by the Ministry of
education and coop program• Aéro-Solaire Club
– Experimentation and learning about renewable energy. Construction of a mini solar car and participation in an inter-school solar car race.
• Environmental Improvements– Construction of new recycling boxes by the
students– Remplacement of disposable dishes in the school
cafeteria

Phase 2
• Educational Component– Online data showing production of
electricity (on web site and closed circuit tv)– Posters, interactive activities and other
educational materials.– Creation of a permanent mural illustrating
the projects, actions et changes made at the school (in pieces which are added as new components are put in place)
– Purchase of 30 Kill-a-Watt monitors and exercises in class related to conservation and carbon footprints (at school and at home)

13
Phase 2
• Conservation Component– Energy Audit by a group of grade 12
students under the supervision of an engineer from Genivar
– Purchase and installation of energy usage and distribution monitors and online data
– Development of an energy efficiency model which will guide our priorities for future phases (controls, etc.) and could be re-applied to other schools

Phase 2
• Communication Component– Involvement of feeder elementary
schools, (presentations, solar model boat race made from recycled matierals)
– Partnering with colleges and universities– Idea for 2009: eco-fair for the Orleans
Community in collaboration with Team Ottawa–Orléans and the City of Ottawa
• Special guests, green products and demos, contests, etc.
