Power System Simulation for Engineers (PSS/E version 30)

Here are instructions for accessing and using the PSS/E-30 software. On-campus students shouldaccess this software at any of the computers in the lab of oo!er rooms ""#$ or "#"#.

%ou should coordinate with your group members to limit the number of simultaneous programuses at any gi!en time &the limit by license is #0'. Also, make sure that you quit the programwhen you are no longer using it. Otherwise it uses up one of the #0 users and someone else maynot be able to get to it.

    %uilding a ase in PSS/E!

,his is illustrated with an e1ample. onsider the power system diagram shown below.

,his power system has 8 ;uses # generating units connected # transformers # loads and $transmission lines. Our ob ecti!e is to model this power system using PSS/E and thereby we canconduct many studies on this networ using the simulation facilities of PSS/E.

    >hen you create a new case using the File &ew command you will get a spreadsheet interface.

%ou will find a lot of ,abs at the bottom of this spread sheet !iew which corresponds to rea;uses ;ranches B ,S etc. mong those the tabs that we use are) &follow the sameorder while creating the case')

    G. Owners,he last three are optional. Bor the sa e of completion we can fill those three spreadsheets too.

    1. %us ata!

,he spread sheet corresponding to ;uses will ha!e many columns in which you are re:uired toenter the data corresponding to e!ery bus in the system. %ou need not enter all the data but onlythe data that are mandatory. Others will ha!e some default !alues that the software assumes while

    sol!ing the Power Blow case.

    a. +i!e e!ery bus a %us &um-er' . Bollow the numbering that is gi!en in the diagram. b. +i!e the %us &ames' as you wish. %ou must type the names within single :uotes. E1.

    ;CS"D etc.

    c. Enter the %us +' in the 3rd column. ,he nominal 47 for buses " and # are "3.A 47and for the remaining 5 buses it is 8G 47.

    d. Once you enter the 47 !alues you can enter the ,rea num-er' to which the bus belongs. ,his is of !ery great significance when it comes to a !ery large system. Hereyou can model e!erything in a single area. So you can fill " under the rea 9umbercolumn for e!ery bus. %ou need not fill in the ne1t column corresponding to the rea

    9ame .e. %ou can also model e!erything in a single ;one num-er . %ou may assign it as " for

e!ery bus. &2i!iding the whole networ into different areas or Iones is at the discretionof the indi!idual modeling the system.' %ou need not fill the Fone 9ame column.

    f. %ou can also model e!erything in a single wner &um-er' . %ou may ust fill " here.%ou need not fill in the name under Owner 9ame column.

    g. Once you ha!e entered the abo!e data you may lea!e the rest of the columns free. ,heywill ta e their default !alues.

one of t ese lines2 i.e.2 we will want to simulate t e outage or removal of a line.)f. %ou need not fill in any other columns.

Bollow this procedure for e!ery branch. Enter all these data for the first branch and then go to thene1t row to enter data for the second. 2o this for e!ery branch in successi!e rows. ,he data for all

branches are ?K" ohm LK"0 ohm and ;K0.00# mho. %ou must find the er unit values for ?L and the line charging admittance ;/#.

calculating L/Fbase . ,his is done only if you are pro!ided with the LD !alues for thetransformer windings. *f no !alues are gi!en then ust lea!e it free'

    i. ,hen enter "00 in the column named 6ate ,' for both the transformers. ,heremaining columns need not be filled. ,hey will assume their default !alues.

    buses # and 5.
