Project Narrative
1. Briefly describe the project.
a. What were your original objectives? The original objective of the project was to improve the basic standards at the Shree Kalidevi Primary and Disabled School in the village of Kuntabesi in eastern Nepal. This Matching Grant Project will provide clean water, sanitation, improvements to the classrooms and secure play area for the disabled students.
b. What was actually accomplished? (Photographs can help to tell your story. Please submit any action photos that you have that show beneficiary participation and demonstrate Rotarian involvement in the project. Please also indicate the name of the photographer.)
During the period since our last progress report (April 2014), the Primary School exterior walls have been cement rendered and a wire fence and iron gate have been erected at the school.

Since the commencement of this project in 2011 the following has been achieved:

Construction of a disable friendly toilet
Construction of female only toilet
Direct access to water was supplied to the Primary & Disabled school via a gravity fed system with holding tanks at both schools
Hand washing facility at the primary school
Water taps situated outside the toilets
Interior walls of primary school rendered & painted
Doors and window shutters painted

Members of the Rotary Club of Dillibazaar and the District Governor of Nepal Dilendra Raj Shrestha visited the site in late July 2013. Members of Rotary Club Dillibazaar have visited
the project site on 3 occasions.

c. When and where did the project take place, and who were the beneficiaries?
The Project took place at the Shree Kalidevi Primary & Disabled School in the village of Kuntabesi, 2.5 hours drive east of the capital Kathmandu. Worked commence September 2011 and was completed 30th September 2014.
The beneficiaries of this project were the students and teachers at both the disabled school and primary school.
2. Scope change. If the project was changed, how and why was it changed?
As reported in the progress report 2012/13, access to water was changed from solar powered pumping system from the village water supply to being gravity feed from a mountain stream higher up the hillside. The gravity fed system was far more beneficial to the school & village council as there will be no ongoing maintenance costs. The series of holding tanks will always be full because the mountain stream constantly flows.
Approval was sort and given by TRF to use funds designated for the solar arrays to now be used to build a second toilet, improve the appearance of the exterior walls of the school and construct a fence around the school.

9. What was the impact of the project on the beneficiaries?
The impact of this project has certainly been a positive one. The students who are the main stakeholders now have a school that has access to water, new toilet facilities, classrooms that are bright and the disabled children have a secure play area and disable friendly toilet facilities.
The working relationship between the Principal and teachers at Shree Kalidevi Primary, members of both Rotary Club’s and the staff from the Asha Foundation (Cooperating Organisation) has always be one of mutual respect and teamwork. Throughout this project the overall outcome for the stakeholders has been of utmost importance as has cultural sensitivity.
This is the first Rotary project at the village of Kuntabesi and it has showcased the impact that Rotary can have on disadvantaged communities.
10. What are the expected long-term community impacts of the project?
This project has addressed the issues of sanitation, hygiene, access to water and improvements to the appearance of the school.
Direct access to water now means that for the first time ever, the students and teachers can just turn on taps whenever they need water. More time can be spent in the classrooms for both students and teachers as the need to walk down a steep path to the village water supply is no longer needed. Hand washing facilities insure that hygiene issues have been addressed. Improved toilet facilities at the disabled and primary school also address the long term sanitation aspect of the school.
