DANCE CRITICISM

This dance resembles the old form of dance called tap dance because the foot works are more emphasized than any other body gestures or movements in the whole performance. It involves stomping, jumping, stepping, kicking, and the like. Although foot movements dominate the whole dance, hand movements were also seen, although very minimal, like raising and waving. All of the movements, feet and hands, were done in a very synchronized and coordinated manner, like to that of dominoes. As far as speed is concerned, the whole performance/dance was done in a lively mode that every person in the audience also dance and move with the dancers on stage. Speaking of music, as it is described as an important element of dance because the music gives the beat of the music, and it also helps to harmonize the dancers in the stage, especially if there is spectacular number of performers. The music used in the video, which is an instrumental music, really helps in because every beat of the music is in time with every step.

Dancer. The dancer, being the most important element of dance, must be really great because the whole performance depends on him/her. In the video, there are maybe more than a hundred of dancers positioned side by side and a main dancer, whose job is to motivate the audience to dance with them.

Choreography. The dance, as mentioned, mostly includes footwork and only includes very minimal hand movements. But even though the dance steps are very simple, the performance still becomes spectacular because such number of dancers is hard to choreograph but still, the dancers manage it and their every steps and actions become very coordinated and an eye candy to the viewers. On the part of the main dancer, although his movements are different from the steps of the backup dancers, the main dancer’s part compliments to those of the backup and he contributes a lot in the whole performance because he executes his dance briskly.

Technique. The style used by the dancers in the video is that they put force and power to their every, hop, jump, step and stomp, and it also implies that the dance is energetic and lively which also makes the audience alive.

Movements. The steps of the backup dancers are non locomotor movements because they are fixed and are stationary to their places. Only the main dancer is seen doing locomotor movements because he travels all around the stage.

Costume. The backup dancers, as the word implies, are only in the background and are not the lead dancer of the performance. As such, their costumes include only black, white and gray (neutral colors-no life). Their shoes is also an essential part of their costume because it produces more sound than the normal shoes, maybe because of the steel plate under it. In the case of the main dancer, he wears an open-chest red top (lively) which suggests energy and full of life performance.

Lightings. The lights also help in the performance. The lights, which are of different colors, contribute much in the performance because it make the dance more as an eye candy and it adds an

entertainment value to the whole act. The lights also let the audience see the dancers and the performance clearly know if they are coordinated with each other.

Set Design. The set design of the presentation includes a stage which has different levels, which functions as a platform which elevates the dancers on the second, third and last row. There is also a designated spot for the band. The set design is an important part of the dance because it allows those numerous dancers to move and groove comfortably on their places.

Spatial Patterns. There are many patterns seen on the dance. The dancers are free to execute their steps without hitting the dancers beside them because of the space given to them. But the dancers didn’t move on their spot on the stage and they are fixed on a single position throughout the performance, because all of the movements are non-locomotor ones.

Music. The music used in the performance is mainly instrumental, but it adds a lot in the overall composition of the dance, because without the music, the dancers would not be that synchronized and coordinated with each other. It also gives the beat to the dancers when to start their stunts.

Interaction of the dancers. More than one dancer appears in the video, maybe a hundred or more and a main dancer. The main dancer is the only one who interacts with the audience and he is also the one who encourages the audience to cheer for them.

Time. The dance has a very fast tempo or speed which makes the whole performance very lively. The speed makes the dance entertaining.

Energy. The dancers possess energy because the dance is very fast.
