17 TAPPSA JOURNAL | VOLUME 4 2014 SAPPI NGODWANA Giant crane and hoist company Konecranes – which has supplied 1,000 heavy-duty process cranes to the pulp and paper industry worldwide since 1947 – also supplied Sappi Ngodwana with two portal and electric overhead travelling cranes for the purpose of roller and motor maintenance in the drying process at the mill’s Fibre Line 3. Delivered in October 2012 to Ngodwana, the larger crane boasts a 45-tonne capacity, a lift height of 16m and a 20.4m span. Travelling speed clocks 40 m/min at weights of 26.1 t. The crane’s hoists, end-carriages and electrics were manufactured in Finland and its bridge- girder structure was manufactured at Konecranes’ Alrode facility, in Johannesburg. Four trucks were used to deliver it to Sappi Ngodwana’s Fibreline #3. Konecranes Southern Africa service, sales and marketing director John MacDonald says this installation was complicated, owing to the limited space for the crane inside the Fibre Uptake 3 building. “A mobile crane, which is generally used when installing a fully assembled double-girder crane, was not an option, as the crane needed to be installed inside a closed building on a different floor from the access point. Therefore, the crane had to be dismantled into smaller components to fit through a 10m by 5m opening in the building’s roof.” The crane also features sway control, which allows its load to achieve the required speed while reducing the sway caused by the acceleration and deceleration of the crane. Konecranes has also equipped the crane with protected areas software which prevents the hook or lifting device from entering protected areas to eliminate machinery or infrastructure damage. Prior to the mill upgrade, Konecranes also installed a 32 t double-girder portal crane in 2007 which is used to move paper rolls. Konecranes also manufactures more general-purpose cranes suitable for the paper and pulp industry. The company’s CXT wire rope hoist is suited for any general lifting, while its jib cranes are suitable as workshop or auxiliary cranes.
