Introduction

Business continuation planning allows the business to maintain or restore critical business operations in case of a disaster or other unexpected disruption. This project will support the activities of the ITaP Business Continuation Roadmap project, led by Bill Urbanczyk. Most of the research and planning for this project will be focused on the business processes, rather than the supporting technology, which will be covered by the ITaP Business Continuation Roadmap.

Objectives

Determine critical business processes and develop a business continuation plan for Human Resource Services, Risk Management, Investments, Sponsored Program Services, Purchasing Services, Comptroller, Costing, Accounting, Disbursements, Payroll, Freehafer Operations, Budget and Fiscal Planning, and the offices of the Vice President of Business Services and Director Business Managers.

Approach

Each area defined above will be asked to assign resources to work on this project. Departmental resources will use interviews of stakeholders and observations of departmental operations to gather information for this project. A template will be developed to facilitate planning.

General Tasks to Complete the Project

Identify critical business services

Identify related critical business processes

Develop risk assessment for critical business processes

Develop templates for documenting business continuation needs and strategies

Develop mitigation and recovery plans

Develop and implement plan for communicating business continuation plan

Develop process for updating the business services continuation plans.

Assumptions

ITaP will be responsible for restoring central computing services, such as networking, file storage, mainframe access, etc.

The Business Services-Computing Steering Committee will prioritize critical business services.

Each department will be responsible for identifying critical business processes and developing business continuation strategies.
