  • English across the curriculum 0IY: migrat-0

Read the text. Find three reasons why animals migrate.

a Match the animals in A to the c1assifications in B.

    A 1 a wildebeest 2 a salmon 3 a monarch butterfly 4 an Arctic tern 5 a swallow 6 a zebra

    B

a bird an insect a fish a mammal

We call this migration. In Africa, large mammals, like elephants, zebras and wildebeests, migrate to find food and water. They usually follow the same routes every year.

A lot of birds migrate to find food and better weather, too. They are usually birds, like swallows, that eat insects. They spend the summer in northern Europe, because there are lots of insects there. In the winter there aren't any insects, so the birds f1y south to southern Europe and Africa.

Some insects migrate, too. In North America, millions of monarch butterflies fly south to spend the winter in Mexico, California and Florida, where it's warmer. They travel

50-65 km each day and they travel about 1,125 km.

b Where do salmon, monarch butterflies, Arctic turns and swallows migrate from and to?

C Answer the questions. How many days does it take a monarch butterfly to fly to Mexico at 60 km per day7

2 How far is it from the Arctic to the Antarctic7 If an Arctic tern lives for six years, how far does it travel in its life7

    ~Animal migrations

Alot of animals travel from one place to another. Some fish migrate to breed. Salmon can swim over 20,000 km in their life. They are born in rivers in Ireland, Scotland and other piaces in northern Europe. The

young fish swim down the river to the sea and into the Atlantic Ocean. They live in the ocean until they are adults. Then they return to the river where they were born. They lay their eggs in the river and then they usually die. Salmon do this, because their eggs are safer in the river. Other fish can't eat them.

Arctic terns travel the furthest when they migrate. They spend the summer in the Arctic, but when winter comes they fly to the Antarctic, because it's summer there. The next year they fly back to the Arctic again. In one year these small birds travel 36,000 km from one end of the earth to the other and back again. Nobody knows how they do it. :

questions. 1 What is the UK short for? 2 Which is the largest part of the UK? 3 15 Eire part of the UK? 4 What are the capital eities of Scotland, Wales and

Northern Ireland? 5 What is the capital of The Republic of Ireland?

    ////////////////////////#////#///#//////////#////////////////////////,w/////#,aw///#//////////////////////////

There are several names for Britain: Britain, Great Britain, the United Kingdom, the UK. The official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Alot of people call the country 'England', but this is not correct. England is only one part ofthe UK. However, it is the largest part. There are four 'countries'in the UK - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland [or Eire) isn't part of the UK. It's an independent country.

London is the capital of the UK, as weil as England, but all the other countries have their own smaller capital cities, too.

Scotland: Until 1503, Scotland and England were separate countries with their own monarchs and parliaments. In that year, however, the English queen, Elizabeth I, died. She had no children, so her cousin, James VI, the King of Scotland, became King James I of England, too. In 1999, Scotland got its own parliament again. This can make laws about some things.

Wales: The English king, Edward I, conquered Wales in the 13th century. Many people in Wales, especially in the north, speak Welsh as their first language and all children must learn Welsh at schoo!. In some schools other subjects are taught in Welsh, too.

Ireland: Elizabeth I's armies conquered Ireland in the 15th century and it later became part ofthe United Kingdom. There were a lot of problems in Ireland in the 19th century and thousands of people ernigrated to the USA. In the 1920s, the south became an independent country [The Republic of Ireland ). but Northern Ireland is still part of the UK.

This is the British flag. People often call it the Union Jack. It's really three flags in one.
