The Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) Protocol is Set to Launch in December
The Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) protocol is set to launch in December. NIV is the updated acronym
replacing the Respironic’s trademarked “BiPAP” acronym. Torrance Memorial Medical Center has brought
together a multidisciplinary group in a Kaizen to examine the use of NIV on our patients. The results of
this effort are the roadmap for non-invasive ventilation implementation, decision making and
understanding if the NIV therapy is truly appropriate for the patient. The protocol will offer providers
insight to the indications and contraindications for this therapy to help the provider make the best clinical
decision possible. It will also include an order set with an “indications” drop down menu with only the
approved indications (the “other” option is not available for selection here) for this therapy in the event the
provider is unclear as to what is an approved indication for this life saving therapy. Khalid Eltawil MD, the
