MDG’s and India• India compared to most nations in Asia, has made

very slow progress in eradicating poverty over the period of 10 years, according to a report in 2011.

• The country has lagged behind in bringing infant mortality and maternal mortality rates down during the 1990-2008 decade significantly.

• However it has made progress in bringing down tuberculosis prevalence rate and HIV prevalence rates.

MDG’s and India• In 2009, it was reported that there has only

been a 3% drop in extreme poverty rates (from 42% to 39%.)

• Southern Asia has achieved its target of cutting in half the proportion of people without access to clean water, but is lagging behind in providing access to safe sanitation with 580 million people still without sanitation.

MDG’s and India• There has been an 11% increase in primary school

enrolment.

• Despite the gains for girls’ school enrolment, southern Asian women remain at a huge disadvantage.

• Only 19% of paid jobs in the region are held by women.

• Maternal health also remains dismal. In 2009 the death rate of children born to South Asian mothers was 7-11%.

How can aid help?• Aid is the transfer of resources from richer

countries to poorer countries.

• It includes money, equipment, training and loans.

• Write a few sentences in your books explaining how aid can help countries achieve the 8 MDG’s.
