Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger
• Poverty has consistentlyconsistently decreased since 1996, after the 1994-1995 crisis that produced 15 million people on extreme poverty. Some of the causes are the following: Low inflation rate and a
positive impact on real salaries as well as citizens purchasing power.
Fiscal discipline has produced a credit market especially for consumption and housing.
Increases on income and improvement on capacities of population in poverty.
GOAL 1. ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY AND HUNGER
• Target 1: Halve, between 1990s and 2015, the proportion of people whose income is less than one dollar a day
– Indicator 1: Proportion of population below national poverty threshold
– Indicator 3: Share of poorest quintile in national consumption
• Target 2: Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger
– Indicator 4: Prevalence of underweight children under 5 years of age

EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN
• Target 4: Eliminate gender disparity in primary
and secundary education, preferably by 2005,
and in all levels no later than 2015.

primary education
– Indicator 9a: Ratio of girls to boys
in secundary education
– Indicator 10: Ratio of literate
women.
– Indicator 12: Proportion of seats
held by women in national
parliament.

GOAL 4. REDUCE CHILD
MORTALITY
• Target 5: Reduce by two
thirds, between 1990 and
2015, the under-five mortality
rate.

GOAL 5. IMPROVE
MATERNAL HEALTH
• Target 6: Reduce by three
quarters, between 1990 and
2015, the maternal mortality
ratio.

health personnel.

GOAL 6 . COMBAT
HIV/AIDS, MALARIA AND
OTHER DISEASES
• Target 7: Have halted by
2015 and begun to reverse the
spread of HIV/AIDS.

mortality rate.

•México has innovative environment targets such as– Taxes for environment rights
that provide protection to the environment and at the same time support citizens living in rural areas.
– Natural areas protected to preserve original fauna and flora.
– Environmental information systems and inventories.
– However, environmental deterioration accumulated for years has not reversed the loss of environmental resources.

GOAL 7 . ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL
SUSTAINABILITY
• Target 9: Integrate the principles of
sustainable development into country policies
and programs and reverse the loss of
environmental resources.
– Indicator 25: Proportion of land area covered
by forest
– Indicator 26: Ratio of area protected to
maintain biological diversity to surface area
• Target 10: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of
people without sustainable access to safe
drinking water and basic sanitation.
– Indicator 30: Proportion of housing with
sustainable access to an improved water
source, urban and rural.
– Indicator 31: Proportion of housing with
access to improved sanitation, urban and rural.
Progress on main MDG´s indicators
México, up to day:
•Has achieved the target of 10 indicators.
•There is confidence on achieving the target on 13 more indictors.
•It will be very difficult to achieve the target of 3
•Has generated 27 new indicators to focus the challenge on those areas more needed of atention.
