SUCCESS STORY OF Sajana Chakma, RAJNAGAR VILLAGE

Mrs. Sajana Chakma, aged about 25 yrs, w/o Mr. Ravi Chakma who is a cultivator by profession a bonafied resident of Rajnagar village, under Diyun circle, District

Changlang of state Arunachal Pradesh, having one 2½ (two and half) years old son. Her family has been supported by her husband which he does daily wage work at

far and nearby places. Whenever her husband goes far off places to earn money she has to manage the household chores all by herself with no help from others.

Mrs. Sajana Chakma is one of the beneficiary under NERCORMP Project in the village which was started

in the year 2014-15.This is the third consecutive year of running and she is being benefitted since ,under

a NaRM-G called Joddha NaRMG.

The village where she is living is a small village with a. population of 600 persons. It has only 96 families which is divided into two NaRM-Gs before coming of

NERCORMP in the village she had many difficulties in all aspect. But when NERCORMP project started in the

village problems begin to solved one after another. As far as she is concerned, she had a tough time to manage the

family affairs as my husband used to remain out of station for longer times. At times I had to borrow money from

others to run the family. Most of the time she remain in debts. She do not know what to do and what not to do to

earn money. We pinned for a single paisa but from where it will come. So, penury was the problem in her family.

As her husband also earns a very little money and whatever he gets are not enough for feeding even. Thinking of

owning a household article was a distant dream. So, life was miserable then.

I can remember in the year 2014-15 in one of our NaRM-G meeting. It was announced that a fund was released to our NaRM-G from NERCORMP to carry out some

of the activities provided in the list. As the meeting progress, there was time to distribute the beneficiaries suddenly my name was proposed in the beneficiary list.

Hearing this my joys knew no bounds! I thought if I get the benefit I will grab it, and try to carry out as per the norms of the project. At last I was given 1 (one) goatery-

Unit Rs15912/ . I happily accepted it. Initially I got 5 (five) goats. Among the 5 (five) goats 3 (three) were matured one and 2 of them babies. The number was

increased to 11 (eleven) goats within one year. Next year i.e., (session 2015-16) the number reached to 16. Then I decided to sell some as keeping them many in

numbers is a great difficulty. I sold 5 (five) goats that year and earned 15,000 Rupees. Again, this year I sold 4 goats @ the rate of Rs. 3000/- per goat earning 12000/

rupees. So, I like the project very much. Because it has completely changed my life and the lives of the villagers. I became economically independent, Now in

comparison to my condition before coming of NERCORMP.

At present I have 5 (goats) in hand. All are healthy and doing well. The money I got after selling goat was partly utilized to repay debts and partly to purchase

household articles and commodities. I spared 5000 rupees also in hand. Now, I do not have to borrow or take loans from others. It is providing substantial support to my

family. It is really proved to be a beneficial for my family. At present goatery units fetch me yearly income of Rs. 10-15 thousands.

Rearing goats is not a easy job. They are very delicate. They cannot be kept by tethering with a rope. They should be freed to open space or area. As keeping or

allowing them completely free all the time is detrimental for the growing crops in the field of the village. As the only solution is keeping them confine during the crop

season and whenever the crops are reaped or harvested the goats are let to roam free. So, keeping goats in a village with limited space is really a challenging job.

When Mrs. Sanjana Chakma started getting income other householders are also eager to get such benefits from the NERCORMP Project. All of them want that the

project continues to exist and function for longer time in the village and provides benefits and income, so that they can be ameliorated economically facilitating the

upliftment of the poorest into self sufficiency.

Mrs. Sajana Chakma

The impact of women Self Help Group in the society Mr.Manrose Talukder Org Secretary, Arunachal Orphan care Society

Twenty five year back from now Bijoypur III was established under the circle of Bordumsa initially

having more than 50 household inhabited by the Chakma Tribe. It is about 60km from district Head

Quarter Changlang. Chakmas are very poor and maginalised tribe and yet to receive full citizenship

rights of India. Farming and rearing of livestocks are the main sources of income and due to scarcity

of lands, people are compelled to look lands for farming in nearby Tribal Villages on rental basis to

eke out living

In a tribal society women folk are mainly confined to household activities and upbringing the children, the women were never considered as a partner in decision making. Recently the situation gradually started changing with the intervention of Nercormp in the year 2014. The formation of NarMG (Natural resource management group) with the active involvement of women folk, unlike in the past, decision making process within the villages has shown drastic change. The mindset of the people slowly started showing a change and realized the importance of roles and responsibilities of women in growth of the society and family too. The introduction of SHG (Self Help Group) movement among the women played a vital role in transformation of the society

. In this context, we could not help to pen down few words about a woman called Mrs Aruna Chakma of Rhep Rhep Shg of Bijoypur III. She had been into the vegetable trade for the last last nine years and has been supplementing to meet the educational expenses of her four children. She buys vegetables from the vegetable growers and sells vegetable to Jairampur, Bordumsa and Pingri in Assam. She narrated her past status with tears in her eyes by the side of her shabbily dressed children, she wished that her children to get the best education, attire with decent clothe like the children of the better off, but to find herself helpless due to abject poverty. Even though, she is a member of SHG , she was hesitant to take loan fearing not able to repay it. In the year 2015, she gained courage to take loan of Rs 3000/- (three Thousand) with the interest rate of 2% annually from her Self Help Group. With hard work and dedication she started growing Brinjal, Tomato, pumpkin, chillies and selling it to the nearby market and could repay the loan. She was able to earn about Rs 80,000/ in total. She says, SHG being a new concept for them, they have came across many ups and downs. However as the time passed, they have overcome all the hurdles and started regular meetings, weekly savings, contributions and hence strengthen the group. The meeting helps them in formulating the annual action plan and regulating the revolving fund received from the Nercormp Changlang. Lastly she thanks Nercormp for transforming the life of neglected communities and hope to see the same kind of social, economic and education transformation in the near future.

SUCCESS STORY OF Mrs. KOPHA SINGPHO ON PIGGERY KHAGAM

MOSSANG VILLAGE

Mrs. Kopha Singpho is a house wife of Mr. Nongkhrunong Singpho from

Khagam Mossang Village, in Changlang district. Her husband is a farmer by

profession and very hard working person. His income is very little as their land

holding too small. Mrs. Kopha never attended any formal schooling. Now, she

is mother of 4 children, a very simple and hard working woman. She started

her own small business of selling vegetables to support the family requirements.

Time and again she suffered heavy loss due to lack of facilities for preservation

of vegetables and little capital was a constant hurdle in her progress. Finally

she was forced to close down her vegetable business.

In the mean time while she came to know about the NERCORMP PROJECT in

the village of Khagam Mossang in the year 2015. With the intervention of this

project she got 1unit piggeryRs11526/ (2 Female and 1 male) from

NERCORMP . She took care of them all and within a year she got 6 piglets of

which 1 died and other 5 she sold After a year she got profit of Rs. 20000. She

was encouraged with her success and planning to scale up her unit. She

attended several awareness programmes on animal husbandry, several

meetings with women groups and SEVA KENDRA staff. She is encouraged

and is happy to learn that she will do better in the coming days. Now she is

more settled and could give better education facilities for her children. She

motivates her neighbors by telling about her success and new dreams of

making much from her new farm .Indeed she is very inspiring in her speech

and dedication with which she does her job. Several other women too are

beginning to take similar interest to begin piggery farm of their own. Actions

speak louder than words. There is lots of positive growth all around. Better

individual, better communities, leading to self reliant individual and

communities. NERCORMP Changlang and SEVA KENDRA too hope a better

future for such enthusiastic women in the locality.

The project looks forward to bring transformation with the co-operation of the

people

A success story of Nongsam Ngemu Fishery Shri. Nongsam Ngemu, a farmer of Kuttom Village of Kharsang Circle, Dist.Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh. He is living with wife, son & daughter also supports his old father and mother. He owns 2 Bighas of tea plantation to afford every needs of family. The annual earnings from this source is hardly 24000 rupees only. However it’s insufficient to support the required needs of family. Being a farmer he had to go through lots of financial constraints as he is the lone bread earner of the family.

He had to manage for livelihood, education for his children’s and medical expenses of his old parents. With the intervention of NERCORM project in Kuttom village, the villagers received financial assistance from the project for different income generating activities. Mr.Nongsam Ngemu got such assistance of Rs 33227/ from the project to construct a fish pond measuring 100 ft. x 50 ft(length & breadth). In the banks of the pond he also planted banana plants which is very beneficial. Banana leaves serve as a fish feeds and are used during the preparation of local rice beer called “Kham”. Moreover, banana fruits are more beneficial for human consumption and household purpose. Hence it can be termed as “Fishery cum Banana Culture”. He got 3000 fingerlings (sp.bahu, grass carp & Rohu) from the Deptt. of Fishery Kharsang, Dist.Changlang. The fingerlings were received from nearby local office which made it convenient to deliver with less mortality and transportation charges. According to him, with the intervention by NERCORMP projects have immensely benefitted him to cultivate fish in his unused plot of land. Earlier the said plot of land was left uncultivated and unproductive due to lack of funds. At present the pond is filled with different species of fishes which is harvested annually. From this harvest he sold some quantity fish to the villagers at the cheaper rate @150/-, whereas the market rate is @200/- per Kg. Hence the villagers can afford nutritious menu on their table in a very cheap price and organic fish from own locality. Moreover, he sold the large quantity in the local market at the rate of Rs.170/-. In Dec.2016, he harvested approximately 230 kg of fish from his pond, out of which 40 kg was sold to the villagers @150/kg.

Economics of the activity

Say, (A). 40 kgs x @150/- = 6000/- and, the rest 190 kgs were sold at the nearest local market @170/- per kg

Say, (B).190 kgs x @170/- = 32300/-. Therefore, the total income generated was approx. A + B=6000 + 32300 = Rs.38300/-(Thirty eight thousand three hundred only). However, the fish feeds are to be purchased from the locality that include mustard cakes @20/- per kg and rice bran @8/- per kg. Approx. 250 kg of mustard cakes and approx. 300 kgs of rice bran are to be fed in a productiion cycle. Say, (A).250 kgs x @20/- = 5000/- and, (B).300 kgs x @8/- = 2400/- Hence, the total expenditure in fish feeds is A+B=5000 + 2400 = Rs.7400/- approx. annually. After the deduction of all the expenses like fish feeds, labour charges, and transportation cost etc. the final profit amount in hand are as follows:- Total Income from Fish, minus total expenditure in fish feeds and others. So, Rs.38300 - Rs.7400/- = Rs.30900/- Therefore, the net income from fish cultivation in the year 2016 was Rs.30900/-(Thirty thousand nine hundred only). Today, he is very happy and much indebted to the NERCORMP/ Changlang for changing his life dramatically. He says, it could have been very pathetic life if the NERCORM did not support him in right time. He describes the project as a boon from the almighty god. At present he and his family members are economically stable to afford the expenses for their livelihood, can afford the school fees to children’s and can look after his ageing parents with good medical attention. Moreover, he is also planning to construct another fish pond to increase the production to double folds thereby multiplying the annual income to touch the five figures.
