R&D Projects: Application for Projects on German as well as Chilean
level. The aim is to achieve a good exchange program
and to conduct R&D together on cell, module and system
level
Bifacial Solar Energy

Investigation of different materials (glass, backsheet, encapsulation, etc).
1 year of installation in the Atacama Desert Solar Platform (PSDA)
Exp.1: Degradation of solar materials
Characterization: Peeling test,
IV, EL,DH 1000-5000,
reflectivity, CTM analysis, etc.

FF losses relative to
the module DH0 power
After DH long time
exposure, performance
difference in the groups
due to material
degradation
Enrique Cabrera et al. , bifi PV PSDA in Antofagasta, January 15th 2015
Damp Heat test with focus on BS
10
Strong losses for
standard BS after
DH3000. Might be
corrosion
Desert and transparent
backsheet is much
more stable for longer
DH exposure
Transparent BS results
show that even for
other materials allowing
BiFi cells materials
beside glass exist
giving really good
weatherability.

Damp Heat test with focus on the
encapsulation
12
Good results of POE
with desert and
standard BS
It makes sense to use
desert BS + the right
choice of Encapsulant
(EVA or POE) makes
huge differences:
step closer to a desert
module?
Enrique Cabrera et al. , bifi PV PSDA in Antofagasta, January 15th 2015
CTM in dependence of glass thickness
13
In terms of CTM, there seems
to be an increase in Pmpp for
thinner glass due to less
absorption.
It makes sense to use thin
glass and even DH data shows
that if the right BS is used (and
later encapsulant) good results
for long DH testing is seen.

investigation of bifaciality installed in the Atacama Desert in term of energy yield
outdoor characterization is needed at the PSDA in order to analyze the
performance behavior under real operating conditions for at least 6 mounts of
measurement
Exp.2: Bifaciality
no cracks are
observed after
soldering

Less FF losses
for half size
module on the
same connector
tabs due to the
series
resistances
reduction.
half size solar
cells with half
current reduce
series resistance
losses to a
quarter compared
to full size cells
the energy yield gain!
