Summer is on its way! We have been busy planning and can’t wait until June to welcome you to our Edina Community Education youth enrichment programs. There are a few things we’d like you to know about our summer programs this year.

First, construction. Eight of ten Edina Public Schools buildings will be under construction this summer (read more on the back cover of this booklet). The Edina Community Center, traditionally home base for many of our summer enrichment programs, will undergo construction on the first and second floors over the summer months. So, we’ll created some new home bases at Creek Valley and Highlands elementary schools this summer. With morning and afternoon camps, plus lunch bunch at both locations, we offer the scheduling flexibility we know you are looking for. KIDS Club and WISE Guys school age care programs for incoming grades 1-5 will also be located at Creek Valley and Highlands this year, offering even more opportunities for flexibility and coordination. See page 4 for more information on KIDS Club, WISE Guys and SURGE.

Both Creek Valley and Highlands have some exceptional outdoor learning spaces, and we’ve planned our programs to take advantage of this opportunity. Our “Nature at Large” program at Creek Valley is led by a professional naturalist and community education staff. Every week includes interactive lessons exploring the school’s natural areas. At Highlands, we’ve invited Hennepin County Master Gardeners to help us maintain the school garden. Kids who are interested will even have the opportunity to become certified Junior Master Gardeners. The goal with our outdoor learning programs is to allow kids to explore the biology of our natural world while picking up some practical skills and making connections that will last a lifetime.

Looking for sports camps? We are able to offer a few sports camps this summer in the Edina Community Center gyms. See page 22 for more information. Please note that we are not able to offer our traditional aquatics swim lessons, as the pools at Valley View and South View will be closed for construction. Look for youth aquatics programs to resume in the fall; registration will open August 1.

We hope to see you this summer! Questions about our summer programs for youth? Don’t

hesitate to contact us: 952-848-3952 or [email protected].

Edina Boys’ Basketball Skills Camp

The Edina Basketball Skills Camp is a unique instructional camp for basketball players who are entering grades 4-9. The camp is directed and coached by Joe Burger, the Edina Boys’ Head Basketball Coach, EHS assistant coaches Zach Makray, Brian Junwirth, and Mike Landers, as well as numerous past and present Hornet varsity basketball players. Beginner players practice the step-by-step and repetitive techniques that will build individual basketball skills. The competitively low cost, low coach to player ratio and our vested interest in the player’s improvement are the factors that make this camp the best summer basketball camp available. Parents are welcome to come and watch. In addition to skills camp, for grades 4-9, see information for our Summer League session that takes place immediately after the camp session. If you have any questions, please call Coach Burger at (612) 237-9694.

Other SportsStrength Training: Open Gym at ECC

Summer Strength Training is a program developed to help improve fitness levels and athletic potential for boys and girls by providing structured and supervised total body strength work-outs in a group setting. All participants are required to complete an equipment orientation that will include assistance in building a training program, how to keep accurate training records

and how to use reps with proper form on the equipment.

After that, participants will be expected to train independently but trainers are always available for questions and adjustments. In order to achieve optimal effects, students should commit to training at least twice per week with a partner whenever possible. Please note: This program is not intended to be one-on-one personal training. Guidelines for Best Results: participants may work out any time between 8am-11am, Monday through Thursday. There is a 90 minute limit. Maximum number of participants allowed in the gym at any one time is 35. We reserve the right to revoke a membership for unsafe behavior. Sail Calhoun: Beginning Optimist

Beginning Optimist is for the new or less experienced sailor. You can repeat the course, since we will attempt to group sailors by skill level and advance them accordingly. The 8 ft. Optimist dinghy is the ideal way to learn to sail a boat and provides a challenge at the racing level. It is a very stable boat and is easy to handle on the water. A sailor who registers for both morning

and afternoon sessions in the same week will receive a discounted fee of $480. Plus, we will avoid repetition of curriculum whenever possible and provide supervision during the lunch hour (bring a lunch or money to buy one). Please contact our office (952-848-3952) to receive the discount. Bring your own life jacket.
