Ref. 1990/2015 21st December, 2015

Dear Members,

I was just reading the other day that it is much colder in Mumbai than Mahabaleshwar, such is the unpredictability

of the weather these days. One must brace oneself to experience changing climate. The recent flood in Chennai is

a classical example of bad urban planning, and even today governments are ignorant of the implications of climate

change. While we may have negotiated very well a climate deal in Paris, our relentless assault on forests, wetlands,

grasslands, mountains, and oceans symbolizes the skewed realities of our promises and actions.

On a lighter note, winter is round the corner, and the migrants have started arriving at various places. We have thus

planned a series of Flamingo Watch programmes at Sewri. You will also get an opportunity to go on bird and bat

trails to Elephanta.

Our forthcoming camps to Andaman and Lakshadweep will provide you an opportunity to see some fantastic marine

life. I will be in Minicoy for project work and will join all those who are participating in the camp. Let’s explore

magnificent marine life while we walk the shores of this beautiful island. I was fortunate to spend six years on the

island, and I can bet you will be able to see some remarkable fauna and hear some remarkable experiences.

The joy of seeing magnificent flora and fauna of the Himalaya and trans-Himalaya is an extraordinary experience.

Thus, we have brought to you camps in Spiti, Great Himalayan National Park, Valley of Flowers, and Ladakh. Our

international camps to Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Bhutan will also be an exciting opportunity to watch nature.

While we continue providing new and exciting destinations to our members, please feel free to suggest locations to

which you feel BNHS should take our members. We also solicit your ideas on increasing membership.

Dr. Deepak ApteDirector, BNHS
