Information Society Technologies (IST)Information Society Technologies (IST)
• Integrating research into technological areas of priority interest for citizens and businesses– Key security challenges posed by the ”all-digital world”– ”Ambient intelligence” systems offering access to the information society for all– Electronic and mobile commerce– Larges-scale distributed systems and platforms
• Communication and computing infrastructures• Components and micro systems
• Information management and interfaces– Knowledge representation and management systems– Multi sensorial interfaces
EU 6RP
Developing environmentally friendly transport systems and Developing environmentally friendly transport systems and means of transport means of transport
Research focus (1)
• New technologies and concepts for all surface transport modes (road, rail and waterborne)
– High efficiency propulsion systems and their components, based on alternative and renewable fuels, taking into account the the fuelling infrastructure.
– Development of zero or near zero emission systems and components, in particular those integrating fuel cells, hydrogen combustion and their fuelling infrastructure into the transport system.
• Advanced design and production techniques– ”Transport specific” advanced design and production techniques, in particular
for ”one-of-a-kind” production environments, leading to improved quality, safety, recycling, comfort and cost-effectivensss of environmentally vehicles and vessels.
EU 6RP - 1.1.6.2 Sustainable surface transport
Making surface transport safer, more effective and Making surface transport safer, more effective and
more competitivemore competitive Research focus (2)
• Rebalancing and integrating different transport modes– Interoperable transport systems, to enable the interconnectivity of the transport
networks, in particular enabling a competitive European railway system and the integration of a European vessel traffic information system.
– Intermodal transport services, technologies (e.g. harmonisation of unit loads) and systems, and advanced logistics
• Increasing road, rail and waterborne safety and avoiding traffic congestion
– Strategies and technologies to increase road safety and improve maritime safety.
– Concepts and systems for advanced human-vehicle, vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-infrastructure interaction.
– Large scale integration and validation platforms for intelligent transport systems (e.g. transport pricing, transport and traffic management and transport information), including satellite navigation applications, new vehicle types and operational procedures to increase capacity and safety, while respecting the environment (in particular in urban and sensitive areas)
EU 6RP - 1.1.6.2 Sustainable surface transport
Instruments (project types)Instruments (project types)
• Networks of Excellence• Integrated projects (”tens of millions Euro”)• Participation in national programmes (Article 169)
• Specific Targeted R&I projects (”millions of Euro”)• Specific research projects for SMEs (”Craft”)
• Promote and develop Human resources and mobility• Coordination activities• Specific support activities• Integrated Infrastructure activities• Direct activities
EU 6RP
Integrated projects (IP)Integrated projects (IP)
Purpose• Object driven research, mobilizing critical mass of activities to solve a
technological or societal problem. New knowledge is prime deliverable
Activities• Multi disciplinary research, development, demonstration, training,
dessimination, take-up of new technologies.
Size• Up to tens of millions of Euro. Minimum 3 participants from 3 different
countries. More likely more than nine.
Duration• Typically 3-5 years, but no maximum.
Contract regime• European Organisations (legal entities) may be coordinator• Increased flexibility and management autonomy• Grant to the budget. 50% for research. 30% for demonstration
EU 6RP
Network of Exellence (NoE)Network of Exellence (NoE)
Purpose• Strengthen scientific and technological excellence on a particular
topic by networking together at European level critical mass of resources and expertise. Creating a progressive and durable integration of partners.
Activities• Programmes with research activities in common, common use of
resources, common management• Partners are expected to incorporate within the frame work most
if not all of their activities on the topic
Main deliverable• Restructuring and reshaping the way research is carried out.• Spreading excellence - not ”closed clubs”
EU 6RP
Research supporting polices and anticipating Research supporting polices and anticipating scientific and technological needsscientific and technological needs
Policy oriented research:• Agriculture; fishery; environment; energy and transport• Health; regional development; trade; development aid; internal market
and competitiveness; social policy and employment; education, training and culture; gender equality; consumer protection; freedom, security and justice; external relation and enlargement; statistical methods and tools, ..
• Economic policy; information society, e-Europe, enterprise
Research to explore new and emerging scientific and technical problems and opportunities
EU 6RP
Horizontal research involving SMEsHorizontal research involving SMEs
15% of funding for Network of Exellence (NoE), Integrated Projects (IP) and Specific Targeted Projects (RTD) is reserved for SMEs.
In addition, special schemes are available for SMEs:
Collective research (new)• Research undertaken by RTD performers on behalf of industrial
associations or industry groups to expand knowledge base for large communities of SMEs. Examples:
– In order to meet regulatory requirements, environmental performance, etc– Pre-normative research (norms and standards)– Reinforcing the technological basis for a specific sector
Cooperative research (CRAFT)• Group of SMEs outsorce research to a RTD performer• SMEs may also carry out the research by themselves in cooperation with
RTD performers
