PROGRAMME NOTES

Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1750), ItalySonata in E major, k.380 L.23

Andante comodo

Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was an Italian composer in the Baroque period. As a

resident of Rome of over 10 years, his work often reflect traditional spanish

influences. His work was highly influential to his followers, especially his effort on

keyboard sonatas and secular cantatas.

Sonata in E major, k.380 L.23, was originally written for the harpsichord. It was takenfrom the fourth Venice volume of his sonatas in 1754. The work opens with an

elegant and lyrical melodies with start-and-stop rhythmic pattern. There are many

double-note passages, use of dotted rhythm, ornaments and octaves in the

composition which shows the elements of Spanish dance music. Scarlatti used many

ornaments throughout the piece and it requires the bright and the clear tone color.

Sonata in E major, k.380 L.23, was the traditional bipartite writing in Baroque

period that dominant chord appears in the first half and it moves to tonic in the

second half.

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), Austria

Sonata No.38 in F major, HD. XVI: 23

Allegro moderato

Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer in classical period. Hewrote many different types of compositions, not only for the

instrumental sonatasbut also symphonies. His works were described to

be witty,unpredictable and elegant.

Sonata No.38 in F major, HD. XVI: 23, was published in 1784. The

opening subject is based on two remarkable voices with joy . It establishs

obvious major/minor key center which is the main character of the

classical era. In the first movement, it begins with F major key and ends

in its dominant key,(C major) and back to its home key, F major. The composition is charming and entertaining in melodic wiring.

Frédéric CHOPIN (1810-1849), Poland

Nocturne in B-flat minor, Op. 9, No. 1

Frédéric Chopin was a Polish composer and pianist in the Romantic

period. Most of his works are for solo piano, such as sonatas, mazurkas,

waltzes, nocturnes, and polonaises. The most significant features in hisworks include beautiful melodic lines and sensitive deployment of

materials.

Nocturne in B-flat minor , Op. 9, No. 1, was one of the Chopin’s twenty-

one nocturnes – short pieces for solo piano inspired by the night, often

featuring song-like melodies supported by broken chords as

accompaniments.

Nocturne in B-flat minor  is written in ABA form, though it is easy to hearthe B-flat minor Nocturne as a work consisting of four - rather than three

– sections. The melancholic opening melody returns several

times, each with changes in nuances as well asembellishments. The music modulates to the relativemajor for the middle section, complete with a moreoptimistic melody. A powerful and dramatic coda finally subdues to

bring the music to a quiet conclusion, ending with a peaceful picardi

third.
