DE A R F RIEN DS,
Well, here we are in year four of Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival and it’s an honour to present you
with our most exciting and diverse programme to date.
We’ve dipped into every genre and traversed the globe to bring you a line-up dedicated to the
incredible musical legacy of jazz and blues; from swing to funk, bebop to blues, Gypsy jazz to
gospel, soul to rock ‘n roll.
We have the supremely talented chanteuse Melody Gardot opening the festival; a 350-strong
choir celebrating Frank Sinatra; no less than three members of James Brown’s original line-up
including the legendary Maceo Parker; the vintage extravaganza that is our Big Swing night and
the UK’s own ‘King of Jazz’, Courtney Pine, with a very personal project featuring musicians from
Africa, the Caribbean and Europe.
These things don’t happen without your support and encouragement and, on behalf of the team,
I’d like to thank you for helping us to grow the festival in scale and ambition every year.
Enjoy the festival!

GODFAThERS OF F U Nk
The names maceo parker, pee Wee ellis and fred Wesley stand tall as pioneers of funk in the
1960s. Taking their inspiration from the jazz masters of the 40s and 50s, they redefined the word
‘groove’ and have inspired countless pop, soul and funk stars ever since. Working with James
Brown, they created the greatest horn section in history with riffs and harmonies that are still the
benchmark today.
maceo parker brings his band to Bristol for the first time and it goes without saying his
performance will be one of the highlights of this year’s festival. Expect high-energy funk, soul and
blues of the sort only Maceo can deliver!
pee Wee ellis and fred Wesley will take us in the other direction. They’ll be looking back at the
music that inspired them when they were starting out. Their show, back to Jazz, will revisit the
music that inspired them to become two of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
We’re taking bets on the three of them appearing on stage together at some point during the
festival!

SOU L SIST ERS
We have an incredible line-up of world-class women headlining this year’s festival including
melody gardot, lisa simone, clare teal and claire martin.
Grammy nominee melody gardot’s extraordinary voice and rare combination of natural talent
and musical sophistication hold audiences all over the world in the palm of her hand. Melody will
open the festival on March 18th.
lisa simone, daughter of the legendary Nina, recently produced the award-winning
documentary ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?’ but she is very much an artist in her own right,
writing her own music alongside heartfelt musical tributes to her mother.
BBC radio regulars and jazz vocalists extraordinaire, clare teal and claire martin, make a
welcome return to this year’s festival. Clare Teal will perform alongside Joe Stilgoe as part of our
perfectly frank show, paying tribute to Frank Sinatra. Claire Martin will perform some of the
great jazz duets alongside the legendary Ray Gelato.

We present four groups who sit comfortably
on the outer fringes of jazz, constantly
pushing the boundaries and redefining
the genre. Jazz-rock fusion pioneers soft

years after their groundbreaking experiments
at the end of the 1960s. The award winning

kick off our Lantern programme on March

brings his latest group groundation and
trombonist dennis rollins treats us to a show

The Foyer is always one of our favourite places
to be during festival. This is where the best
local jazz and blues artists take over and show
us what a vibrant and healthy scene we have
here in Bristol.
There are so many highlights to choose from
but look out for George Cooper’s new group
the Jazz defenders; mind-boggling duo

stars of UK jazz sefrial and, a VERY special

M ACEO PA Rk ERHis name is synonymous with funk music, his pedigree impeccable, his band the
tightest little funk orchestra on earth. We’re delighted to welcome the ‘King of Funk
and Soul’ himself, Maceo Parker, to Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival!
As the lynchpin of James Brown’s legendary JB’s, he produced some of the most
enduring entries in the vast canon of American soul music and sowed the seeds of the
funk revolution of the 1970s.
His collaborations over the years have included Prince, Ray Charles, James Taylor, De
La Soul, Dave Matthews Band and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. His timeless sound has
garnered him a fresh young fan base.
It is almost impossible to separate which came first, Maceo or the funk. He is one
of the early pioneers of the modern funk and hip-hop sounds we still jump to in the
present day.

MELODy GA RDOTGrammy Award nominee, international best-selling singer, songwriter and musician
Melody Gardot transcends musical distinctions of jazz, blues and R&B to offer a
stirring social and musical statement. Her extraordinary voice and rare combination
of natural talent and musical sophistication hold audiences all over the world in the
palm of her hand.
With its funky bass rhythms, retro-soul brass arrangements, euphoric gospel singers
and esoteric orchestrations, her new album, ‘Currency of Man’, is the very antithesis
of smooth jazz. She has mastered the art of capturing mood and emotion in her
music, prompting The Times to say of her music: ‘every decade or so an artist comes
along who redefines the art of the possible’.
“With such a perfectly melodious name, Melody Gardot was surely
destined to be a star. Last night at the Royal Festival Hall she certainly
seemed like one. It was a proper old-fashioned rock gig, with a kick-ass
rhythm section, clouds of dry ice, a gyrating trio of saxes and trumpet, and
a wall of pumping sound that made everyone sway and clap ecstatically.
Startling!”

Pee Wee and Fred have worked with many of the greats – from Ray Charles and Count Basie to
Ginger Baker and Randy Crawford – inspiring several generations of musicians along the way.

LISA SI MON ELisa Simone is her own woman: a Grammy nominated singer, songwriter and performer whose
ability to transcend genres echoes the tradition of her mother – musical icon and pioneer Nina

Better known as Simone and Lisa Simone on Broadway and in entertainment circles, she was
revealed to the world of jazz in 2009 when she performed alongside Dianne Reeves, Angelique

Blessed with a rich vocal range, an innate skill for lyrical interpretation and a soul-deep

Ay NSLE y LIST ER With explosive natural ability and fiery, emotionally charged compositions, Aynsley
Lister’s brand of blues-based rock delivers contemporary songwriting that’s real,
heartfelt and soul-searching.
Lister is a leading light in the resurgence of British blues-infused music. Whether
passionately writing and recording his own material or mesmerising audiences at his
live shows, one thing is abundantly clear; music is hard wired into his DNA and flows
from his fingertips like sonic bolts of lightening.

ChRIST I A N MCBRIDE A N D EDGA R M E y ER
The term “double bass” takes on new meaning as two of the greatest living practitioners of the
instrument— jazz master Christian McBride and classical/folk/bluegrass Renaissance man Edgar
Meyer—join forces for a thrilling exploration of the deep space beyond genre and expectation.
Christian McBride is the undisputed don of the acoustic-bass in jazz. You could even say he was
born into the role as his father and great-uncle were bassists before him in Philadelphia. Child-
prodigy Christian followed studies at Juilliard with a stellar jazz career performing with everyone
from Freddie Hubbard to Pat Metheny as well as guesting with James Brown, Paul McCartney and
The Roots and leading his own band. The McArthur ‘Genius’ Fellowship-winner Edgar Meyer - who
is also a bassist-son of a bassist-father and a noted composer as well as an instrumentalist -
combines bluegrass with the classical repertoire. His collaborators include Yo Yo Ma, Joshua Bell,
Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas and James Taylor.
We welcome St. George’s contribution to the Bristol International Jazz and Blues Festival .
