Zwölf Notizen zur Arbeit des Verlegers

1. Bücher zu verlegen ist eine Suche – der Antrieb dabei, die flüchtige Gegenwart lesbar zu machen.

2. Der Verleger organisiert die Gemeinschaft der Produ-zierenden. Er ist derjenige, der die unterschiedlichen Akteure zusammenbringt; er sorgt dafür, dass alle an einer Buchproduktion Beteiligten in einen Austausch-prozess treten, kooperieren.

3. Eine Bibliothek ist für den Verleger, was für den Über-setzer das Wörterbuch ist – eine Möglichkeit, sich zu vergewissern. Er weiß, dass Bücher immer auch aus an -deren Büchern gemacht sind und dass der Ge brauchs -wert eines Buches nicht zuletzt darin liegt, Ideen für neue Bücher zu liefern.

4. Die Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten des Mediums Buch weiter-zuentwickeln, gehört zu seinen Aufgaben: Denn ein Buch ist mehr als ein Container für Texte.

5. Die Arbeit des Verlegers ist Kritik in ihrer elementar-sten Form. An ihm muss vorbei, wer in den Raum des Buches hineingelangen möchte.

6. Bei jeder Buchproduktion gibt es viele Kontrollgänge: Das Lektorat, der Layoutentwurf, die Fahnenkorrektur, die Proofs der Bilder, der Blindband, das „Gut zum Druck“, die Druckabnahme, die Bindefreigabe. Erst wenn Ja gesagt wird, geht es weiter.

Twelve Notes on Working as a Publisher

1. Publishing books is a quest, propelled by the urge to give legible form to the fleeting present.

2. The publisher organizes the production team, bringing together the various actors and ensuring that all those involved in producing a book enter into a process of exchange, a cooperative venture.

3. A library is for the publisher what the dictionary is for the translator — an opportunity for self-assurance. The publisher knows that books are always created from other books and that the practical value of a book lies not least in its capacity to furnish ideas for new books yet to come.

4. Since a book is more than just a textual container, one of the publisher’s tasks is to develop the range of ex-pressive possibilities inherent in the book medium.

5. Saying no: the publisher acts as a critic in the most fundamental sense of the word, vetting who may enter into the book’s productive space.

6. Saying yes: the process of producing a book includes a series of checks: editing, layout design, proofing of the texts and images, dummy, printing proof, final print approval, the approval to bind. The work only proceeds when the publisher says yes.

7. Printing is the enactment of the book. Rather like in music, where each performance of a composition sounds different, the printing of a book is also a process that never leads twice to the same result.

7. Drucken ist die Aufführung des Buches. Ähnlich wie in der Musik, wo jede Aufführung einer Komposition anders klingt, ist auch der Druck eines Buches ein Vor-gang, der nicht zweimal zum gleichen Resultat führt.

8. Bücher zu produzieren ist die eine Hälfte der Arbeit; sie in die Welt zu bringen, sie zu verteilen, die andere. Erst durch ihre Verteilung werden Bücher wirklich zu Büchern, bis dahin sind sie nur Buchgespenster.

9. Der Markt ist eine große Selbstmanifestation der Ge -sellschaft, ein Ort des Austauschs. Und der Verleger mittendrin.

10. Bücher verlegen ist intellektuelle Arbeit und unter-nehme risches Spiel. Wirtschaftlichkeit und Verschwen-dung. Das Ziel des Verlegers heißt: ökonomisch – Selbst erhal tung, geistig – Expandieren.

11. Der Verleger ist derjenige, der in ein neues Alphabet einführt: in ein Lesen, das kein lineares Voranschreiten mehr ist, sondern ein schnelles Hin- und Herspringen zwischen den Buchseiten und den Bildern und Texten auf ihnen.

12. Ähnlich wie sich eine Stadt von der anderen unterschei-det, unterscheidet sich auch ein Verlag von anderen: durch die Atmosphäre, die Größe, die Lebendigkeit; durch seine dunklen Zonen; durch die Konflikte, denen er Raum gibt; durch die Geschwindigkeit, mit der produ-ziert wird und auch und vor allem durch die Fantasie, was an diesem Ort möglich ist, jetzt und in Zukunft.

8. Producing books is half the work; the other half involves bringing these books into the world and distributing them. A book only really becomes a book when it is dis tri buted to an audience. Up until that point it is merely a shadow of a book.

9. The market is a forum for a larger self-manifestation of society, a place of exchange. With the publisher right in the middle of it.

10. Publishing involves intellectual work and entrepreneu -r ial play. Thrift and profligacy. The publisher’s watchword is: self-preservation on the economic level, expansion on the cerebral level.

11. The publisher is a mediator of new forms of reading. A reading that is no longer a linear progression but a process of leaping swiftly back and forth, navigating between the pages of the book and the images and texts printed on them.

12. Just as one city is distinct from other cities, so are all publishing houses quite different from one another: in terms of their atmosphere, size, and vibrancy; their areas of darkness; the conflicts they afford space to; the speed with which they produce their books; and, above all, the flights of fantasy that they make possible, both now and in the future.

Andy Warhol, Susan Sontag, John Lennon & Yoko Ono – Jonas Mekas war mit vielen New Yorker Künstlern eng vertraut. Der gebürtige Litauer kam 1949 über Deutschland nach Brooklyn und begann dort, seine ersten Experimentalfilme zu drehen. Mekas entwickelte eine Form des Tagebuchfilms, in dem er seine alltäglichen Beobachtungen festhielt. Er wurde zum Seismographen der New Yorker Künstlerszene und Vordenker des amerikanischen Avantgarde-Kinos. Ab 1958 veröffentlichte er wöchtlich in der Village Voice seine legendäre Kolumne „Movie Journal“, in der er nicht nur über Filme schrieb. Er führte zahlreiche Künstlergespräche, die nun zum Teil erstmals in seinem Scrapbook of a Diarist erscheinen. Das Buch enthält veröffentlichte und unveröffentlichte Texte, die Jonas Mekas als aufmerksamen Tagebuchschreiber und einzigartigen Chronisten der Gegenwart zeigen: und das mittlerweile seit über 50 Jahren.

Andy Warhol, Susan Sontag, John Lennon & Yoko Ono — Jonas Mekas was well acquainted with a great many New York artists. Born in Lithuania, he came to Brooklyn via Germany in 1949 and began shooting his first experimental films there. Mekas developed a form of film diary in which he recorded his daily observations. He became the baro-meter of the New York art scene and a pioneer of American avant-garde cinema. Every week, starting in 1958 he pub-lished his legendary “Movie Journal” column in the Village Voice, writing on a range of subjects that were by no means restricted to the world of film. He conducted numerous inter views with artists, some of which will now appear

for the first time in his Scrapbook of a Diarist. The book contains published and unpublished texts that reveal Mekas as a thoughtful diarist and an unparalleled chronicler of the day — a phenomenon that has continued now for over fifty years.

Jonas Mekas (*1922, Semeniškiai / Lithuania), lives and works in New York. Experimental film-maker, writer, poet and co-founder of the Anthology Film Archives one of the world’s largest and most important repositories of avant-garde film. Mekas’s work has been exhibited in museums and festivals worldwide.

Das Black Mountain College (BMC), 1933 in North Carolina gegründet, gilt durch seinen disziplinübergreifenden und experimentellen Ausbildungsgedanken als eine der innovativsten Schulen der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bildende Kunst, Ökonomie, Physik, Tanz, Architektur und Musik wurden hier gleichberechtigt gelehrt; Lehrer und Studie-rende lebten in einer demokratisch organisierten Community zusammen. Der erste Rektor der Schule war John Andrew Rice, neben vielen anderen gaben hier Josef Albers, John Cage, Walter Gropius und Buckminster Fuller Kurse. Am BMC wurden viele avantgardistische Konzepte entwickelt. Der bilderreiche Band erscheint zur Ausstellung Black Mountain. Er ist die erste umfangreiche Publikation zum Black Mountain College im deutschsprachigen Raum und zeichnet die Geschichte dieser legendären Schule in ihren Grundzügen nach.

The interdisciplinary and experimental educational ideas espoused by Black Mountain College (BMC), founded in North Carolina in 1933, made it one of the most innovative schools in the first half of the twentieth century. Visual arts, economics, physics, dance, architecture, and music were all taught here on an equal footing, and teachers and students lived together in a democratically organized community. The first rector of the school was John Andrew Rice, and Josef Albers, John Cage, Walter Gropius, and Buckminster Fuller were among the many adepts to give courses here.

In consequence, BMC witnessed the development of a range of avant-garde concepts. This richly illustrated book appears in conjunction with the Black Mountain exhibition. It is the first comprehensive publication on BMC in the German-speaking world and traces the key moments in the history of this legendary school.

Mitte der 1960er kommt es zu einem Boom von Underground- und Selbstpublikationen. Hektografie, Mimeografie und Offsetdruck erlauben es nicht nur, günstig kleine Auflagen herzustellen, sondern befördern eine spezifische Ästhetik: In wilden Klebelayouts kombinieren »messianische Amateure« Typoskriptästhetik, Handschriften, Kritzelzeichnungen, zusammengetragenes, collagiertes Bildmaterial, Pornofotos, Schnappschüsse, Comics. Die Typografie entregelt sich bewusst, parallel zu einer Deregulierung der sprachlichen und bildlichen Ausdrucksformen im Namen einer neuen »Sensibilität«. Der Band (der parallel zu einer Ausstellung in der Bremer Weserburg erscheint) zeigt erstmals in dieser Breite Under-ground- und Selbstpublikationen der BRD, aber auch den internationalen Kontext, in dem diese entstanden sind: nicht als Geschichte der Anekdoten, sondern als Versuch, den ästhetischen Kosmos einer Do-it-Yourself-Revolte zu erschließen, der auch einen neuen Blick auf den gegenwärtigen Boom von »Independent Publishing«, Risographie-Ästhetik usw. herausfordert.

The mid-1960s witnessed a boom in underground and self-published works. Hectographs, mimeographs, and offset printing not only allowed for the production of small, low-cost print runs but also promote a unique aesthetic: using wild mock-ups, “messianic amateurs” combined typescript aesthetics, handwriting, scribbled drawings, assemblages of collaged visuals, porn photos, snapshots, and comic strips. The typography consciously frees itself, in parallel to a liberalization of linguistic and visual forms of expressi-on in the name of a new “sensibility”.This book (which appears in conjunction with an exhibition at the Weserburg in Bremen) is the first to present the underground and self-published works that came out of West Germany in such depth, while also showing the inter-

national context in which they emerged: not as an anecdotal history but as an attempt to tap into the aesthetic cosmos of a Do-It-Yourself rebellion, one that also challenges us to take a new look at the current boom in “independent publishing”, the risograph aesthetic, and so on.

Bruno Lüdke wurde – fälschlich – als der „größte Massenmörder in der Kriminalgeschichte“ bezeichnet. Der im National-sozialismus geheim gehaltene Fall bot seit den 1950er Jahren Stoff für Enthüllungsgeschichten und filmische Fiktionen. Die Akteure beriefen sich auf die Wahrheit der Archivakten: medizinische Gutachten, Protokolle der Polizei, Fotografien, Körperabformungen und Lüdkes Sterbeurkunde. Dieses Buch entwirft zu den wissenschaftlichen und populären Ima-ginationen vom Bösen eine Medien- und Wissensgeschichte vom 19. Jahrhundert bis in unsere Gegenwart. Analysiert werden stereotype und rassistische Menschenbilder, Visualisierungen des Verbrechers als Typus, Wahrheits- und Trophäenproduktionen und die vergangenheitspolitischen Dimensionen von Medienpraxis. Fabrikation eines Verbrechers demonstriert wissenschaftliches Denken dicht am Material, theoretisch und methodisch transparent – für eine zeitgemäße historische, politische und ästhetische Bildung.

In the 1950s, Bruno Lüdke was (erroneously) considered the “greatest mass murderer in criminal history”. The case was kept secret by the Nazis, but since the 1950s it has provided material for sensationalist media revelations and film dramatizations. The protagonists have relied on the truth of the archive materials: medical opinions, police procedural reports, photographs, lifecasts, and Lüdke’s death certificate. This book examines the scientific and popular imagination of evil, conducting a historical survey of the media and charting the history of knowledge from the nineteenth century up to the present day. It includes analysis of stereotypical and racist conceptions of human-kind, visualizations of the criminal as a type, the production of truth and trophies, and how German mass media

Axel Doßmann is a historian, research associate, and senior lecturer at the Chair of History in the Media and in the Public Sphere at the University of Jena.Susanne Regener is a cultural theorist and Professor of Media History and Visual Culture at the University of Siegen.

Seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre fotografiert Jan Wenzel in Fotofix-Kabinen. Die Mechanik des Automaten schafft ein foto-grafisches Ereignis, das genau 28 Sekunden dauert. Wenzel bringt der Maschine die Bilder bei. Die Tableaus, oft sind es mehrere zusammengelegte Fotostreifen, zeigen imaginäre Räume, die durch den schnellen Wechsel zwischen den ein-zelnen Aufnahmen entstehen. Sie sind das Ergebnis einer bestimmten Choreografie, mit der Gegenstände in den Auto-maten gehalten wurden. Die Dynamik entsteht in den Bildern durch minimale Unterschiede in den Anschlüssen. „Jedes meiner Fotos ist ein Resultat aus Kalkül, Zeitknappheit, Selbststeuerung und Zufall“ sagt Wenzel über seine Tableaus aus Fotofixstreifen, die in Portraits and Repetition im Überblick gezeigt werden.

Jan Wenzel has been taking photos in Fotofix booths since the beginning of the 1990s. The automatic machines are designed to produce a photograph in a process that lasts exactly twenty-eight seconds. Wenzel trains the machine in the art of image-making. The pictures, which often consist of a combination of a number of photo strips, show imagi-nary spaces that are generated by the quick change between individual shots. They are a product of a certain choreography by means of which objects have been held in the machines. The sense of dynamism in the pictures comes from the minimal gaps between the juxtaposed images.

“Each of my photos is the result of a calculation, a lack of

time, a process of self-direction, and chance.” This is how Wenzel describes the tableaux he produces from Fotofix strips, an overview of which can be seen in Portraits and Repetition.

Jan Wenzel works as a publisher, author and artist in Leipzig. His photographic work has been shown in exhibi-tions in a range of venues, including the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Musée de l’Elysée Lausanne, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Museum Folkwang in Essen.

Die italienische Künstlerin Ketty La Rocca entwickelte ihr radikales Werk in einer Zeitspanne von nur einem Jahrzehnt. The Italian artist Ketty La Rocca developed her radical work over a period of just ten years. It includes collages, sculptures, photographs, artist books, performances, and films and revolves around the difference between symbols and physical bodies, appropriation and trans mission, power and resistance.Inspired by the experimental poetry of the mid-1960s, she tackles the issues of communication in the age of mass media, putting herself in the spotlight as both artist and woman hankering for “another” language that gives form to the “non-identical”. YOU is the first monograph to trace La Rocca’s artistic output from 1962 to 1976 and makes a selection of her own texts accessible to an international readership.

Ketty La Rocca, (1938 – 1976), lived and worked in Florence. She was a leading exponent of body art and visual poetry in Italy in the 1960s. Her work has been shown in many national and international exhibitions.

André Gelpkes Serie Sex-Theater entstand in den 1970er Jahren und zeigt Darsteller verschiedener Sextheater in Hamburg St. Pauli. „Die Faszination, die mich als Fotograf erfasste, ging von der Persönlichkeit des Einzelnen aus, dem Darsteller, der bereit war, die geheimen sexuellen Fantasien einer verklemmten Gesellschaft in aller Öffentlichkeit und nur gegen ein Honorar in die Realität umzusetzen.“1981 wurde Sex-Theater erstmals als Buch veröffentlicht und war schnell vergriffen. Die Ausgabe, die Spector Books gemeinsam mit cpress veröffentlicht, ist eine Neuinszenierung der Serie: mit einer erweiterten Bildauswahl, neuen Texten und in einer Form, die diesem Bildconvolut eine zeitgenössische Bühne im Buch verschafft. Denn die Epoche, die hier sichtbar wird, ist zu Ende. In Sex-Theater ist der Niedergang dieser Clubs festgehalten.

André Gelpke’s series Sex-Theater was produced in the 1970s and depicted performers from a number of different sex theatres in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district. “The fascina-tion that captivated me as a photographer came from the personality of the individual, from the performer who was prepared to realize in public the secret sexual fantasies of an inhibited society, simply in exchange for a fee.”Sex-Theater was first published as a book in 1981 and quickly sold out. The edition produced by Spector Books together with cpress represents a new “staging” of the series: it includes an expanded selection of images and new

texts, and is presented in a form that offers this collection of photos a contemporary framing. The era that is depicted here is over, and the decline of these clubs is documented in Sex-Theater.

André Gelpke (*1947) lives in Zurich and Grattino (Italy). From 1969 to 1974 he studied under Otto Steinert at the Folkwang School of Design in Essen. From 1990 to 2012, he was head of photographic studies at the Zurich Univer-sity of the Arts, where he had a profound influence on a whole generation of students.

In einem heißen Sommer hielt sich Philip Gaißer in Petömihályfa auf – einem kleinen ungarischen Dorf südlich des Balatons, wo die Bauern auf verwilderten Weinbergen Obst anbauen, aus dem sie Palinka, ihren hochprozentigen Schnaps brennen. In der Nacht fotografierte der Künstler im Vorbeilaufen – ohne durch den Sucher der Kamera zu schauen – die anmutigen Früchte. Durch das Blitzlicht werden sie aus der Dunkelheit gerissen. Die blauen Pflaumen, gelben Trauben und samtigen Pfirsiche geben so ihre wahre Schönheit preis. Gaißer kontrastiert die Bilder jeweils durch Seiten, die einen Farbverlauf zeigen, der der Farbigkeit der jeweiligen Frucht entspricht. Konkrete Natursituation und Reflexion der Fotografie treffen aufeinander.

Philip Gaißer spent a hot summer in Petömihályfa — a small Hungarian village south of Lake Balaton, where the farmers use overgrown vineyards to cultivate fruit, from which they make Palinka, their potent brand of schnapps. At night the artist took photographs of the dainty fruit as he went past — without looking through the camera viewfinder. The flash of the camera plucks them from the darkness: blue plums, yellow grapes, and velvety peaches thus reveal their true beauty. Gaißer contrasts each image with a page showing a colour gradient corresponding to the colour of the par-ticular fruit. The result is a coming together of a specific natural setting and a moment of photographic reflection.

Philip Gaißer (*1980), lives and works in Hamburg and Leipzig. His work has been shown at different venues, in-cluding the Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, the Dresden Albertinum, and more recently Camera Austria in Graz. He was also honoured with the 2013 Förderpreis annual advancement award presented by the Arthur-Boskamp-Stiftung, Hohenlockstedt.

Im März 2009 stürzte das historische Stadtarchiv in Köln ein: eine Katastrophe, die als Folge des neoliberalen Stadt-umbaus gelesen werden kann. Trotzdem hat es eine Kritik am Neoliberalismus oft schwer, weil ihr ein klar umrissener Gegenstand fehlt. Angesichts struktureller Komplexität richten sich Analyse und Kritik oft nur auf Vereinzeltes. Dieser Tendenz begegnet Arne Schmitt in seinem Buch mit dezidierter Einfachheit, oder, um einen zentralen Begriff aus dem Text des Schriftstellers Thorsten Krämer zu gebrauchen: mit Un-Unübersichtlichkeit. Auf einem abgesteckten Spaziergang durch die Stadt Köln fotografiert Schmitt Architekturen verschiedener Epochen, alle in Schwarzweiß. Bilder und Buchform nehmen dabei Bezug auf jene thematischen Bildbände der 1950er und 1960er Jahre, in denen politische und gesellschaftliche Kritik der Gegenwart mit fotografischen Darstellungen der Stadt verknüpft wurde – ein Anspruch, den es zurückzugewinnen gilt.

In March 2009 Cologne’s historical Stadtarchiv collapsed: a catastrophe that can be seen as a consequence of a neo-liberal programme of urban redevelopment. Yet for all that, critiques of neo-liberalism often run into difficulty because they lack a clearly defined object to focus on. Faced with structural complexities, their analysis and criticism is often directed towards isolated instances. Arne Schmitt con-fronts this tendency in his book with a resolutely straight-forward approach, or — to use a key concept from the accompanying text by writer Thorsten Krämer — with “un -complexity”. On a clearly mapped-out walk through Colog-ne, Schmitt photographs architecture from different peri-

ods, all in black and white. The images and the form of the book thus refer back to the theme-oriented photo-books of the 1950s and 1960s, in which political and social critiques of the day were combined with photographic depictions of the city — a level of achievement that is well worth recaptu-ring.

People behind the windows of public buses — at the end of a working day in the centre of Paris, they wait for the bus to bring them back to the banlieue. They seem introspective, engrossed in thought, their gaze directed towards an inner landscape. The camera’s view of the subjects it portrays is frequently refracted by mirrorings and iridescent light reflections. As a counterpoint to these photographs are the ephemeral traces of human presence; scratches scored

into the glass, fingerprints, and other deposits left on the bus windows. In the pictures they come across as abstract gestures of the light, cloud formations, or clusters of stars. Menschen hinter den Fenstern von Linienbussen – sie warten nach einem Arbeitstag im Pariser Zentrum darauf, dass der Bus sie in die Banlieue zurückbringt. Sie wirken in sich gekehrt, in Gedanken vertieft, den Blick auf eine innere Landschaft gerichtet. Der Kamerablick auf die Porträtierten ist vielfach gebrochen durch Spiegelungen und irisierende Lichtreflexe. Diesen Fotografien gegenübergestellt sind ephemere Spuren menschlicher Präsenz: Kratzer, die in das Glas eingeritzt sind, Fingerabdrücke und andere Ablagerungen an den Busscheiben. In den Fotografien wirken sie wie abstrakte Lichtgesten, Wolkengebilde oder Sternenhaufen. Es scheint, als blickte der Betrachter in einen Inkubator, in den sich die Matrix des menschlichen Daseins aus kleinsten Partikeln zusammenfügt.

What kinds of approaches do architects invent and appro-priate to reflect on their ideas outside of traditional design practices? In einem fiktiven Dialog mit dem französischen Soziologen Bruno Latour und dem Philosophen Michel Serres begibt sich Tabea Michaelis auf einen „randonnée“ auf der Elbinsel Wilhelmsburg in Hamburg und beobachtet das alltägliche Zu sammenspiel zahlreicher menschlicher und nicht-menschlicher Akteure aus der Perspektive der „Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie“. Tätowierte Sportautos am Straßenrand, leere Yum-Yum-Tüten vor Hauseingängen oder die seriellen Eigenbau-weisen im Hafengebiet hält sie in Texten, Fotografien, Open-End-Stories und Zeichnungen fest. Im iterativen Kodierver-fahren der „Grounded Theory“ bildet Tabea Michaelis schließlich einunddreißig konzeptuelle Begriffe, die das „Programm des Möglichkeitsraums“ auf analytisch-poetische Weise widerspiegeln. Es ist ein Buch, welches nicht nur unzählige Episoden eines „randonnée“ als Katalog zueinander führt, sondern mit seiner Methodologie eine neue Perspektive auf Stadt eröffnet.

In a fictional dialogue with the French sociologist Bruno Latour and the philosopher Michel Serres, Tabea Michaelis sets off on a randonnée on Wilhelmsburg Island, which sits in the middle of the Elbe in Hamburg, and observes the everyday interaction of numerous human and non-human actors from the perspective of the actor-network theory. Using texts, photographs, open-ended stories, and draw-ings, she records sports cars “tattooed” with fancy designs on the side of the road, empty Yum Yum bags in front of building entrances, and the series of DIY constructions in the harbour area. Michaelis applies the iterative coding process of Grounded Theory and ultimately creates thirty-

one conceptual terms reflecting the “programme of the possible” in a style both analytical and poetic. The book succeeds in bringing together the myriad episodes of a randonnée in the form of a catalogue, while its methodology affords us a new perspective of the city.

Tabea Michaelis (*1976) lives and works in Basel and Berlin. She is a landscape architect and holds an M. Sc. in Urban Design. Since 2012 she has been collaborating on the Denkstatt project, which deals with the concept and implementation of participatory design processes.

Der Studiengang Urban Design (UD) arbeitet seit 2008 an unterschiedlichen Formen der Stadtforschung. Mit Tom Paints the Fence präsentiert UD seine Erzählung von Stadt: Stadt ist nichts Gegebenes, sondern wird produziert. Damit ver-binden sich Wissensformen, die das kollektive Stadtmachen als einen Akt der Verständigung ernst nehmen. Die Fragen entstehen bei den Akteuren – ähnlich wie in Mark Twains Roman, wo die Nachbarskinder Tom Sawyer erst verspotten, der als Strafarbeit den Zaun streichen muss, um später, durch Toms Verhandlungsgeschick, den Pinsel selbst in die Hand zu nehmen. Tom Paints the Fence bezieht sich auf diesen Akt sozialer Interaktion. In ihm liegt ein politisches Verständnis von Stadt, das stets an Verhandlung gebunden bleibt. Diese Haltung zu Stadt will (ein)geübt werden. Den exemplarischen Rahmen dafür liefert das Projekt „Universität der Nachbarschaften“, das hier in Bezug auf Forschung, Lehre, Praxis untersucht wird.

The Urban Design (UD) degree programme has been work-ing on different types of urban research since 2008. Tom Paints the Fence is a presentation of UD’s urban narrative: the city is not a given entity but is something we produce. The project thus combines forms of knowledge that deal seriously with the notion that the collective work of urban creation is an act of common agreement. The questions arise on the part of the actors — just as in Mark Twain’s novel, the neighbourhood kids first make fun of Tom Sawyer for having to paint the fence as a punishment, only to suc-

cumb later to his bargaining skills and take the brush off him to do the painting themselves. Tom Paints the Fence refers to this process of social interaction. It incorporates a political understanding of the city that is always tied up with negotiation. This attitude to the city needs to be exer-cised and rehearsed. The “Universität der Nachbarschaften” (Neighbourhood University) project provides an exemplary space for this, and its work is examined here from the perspective of research, theory, and practice.

Housing creates the rooms, neighbourhoods, and streets of our daily lives. But housing issues are increasingly re-duced to real-estate problems and dissociated from the cultural practices of architecture, with the notable absence of alternative social actors being painfully apparent. The result is that growing numbers of people are finding it in-creasingly difficult to access affordable housing on their own terms. The HKW project Wohnungsfrage investigates the fraught relationship between architecture, housing, and

social reality in an exhibition of experimental housing models, an international academy, and a publication series that examines various options for self-determined, social and affordable housing. The series presents key historical works accompanied by new commentaries, contemporary case studies from around the world, and publications by activists concerned with urban policy issues and working in collaboration with architects and artists.

Der Berliner Stadtbaurat Martin Wagner gründete 1931 die Arbeitsgemeinschaft für ein wachsendes Haus, der u. a. Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius, Lud-wig Hilberseimer, Erich Mendelssohn, Hans Poelzig sowie Hans Scharoun angehörten. Als architekto-nische Antwort auf die Weltwirtschaftskrise entwar-fen sie anpassungsfähige Kleinsthäuser, die nichts außer dem Nötigen und Sinnvollen vorhalten und dazu prädestiniert sein sollten, sich entsprechend der sozialökonomischen Verhältnisse der Bewohner zu verändern. Diese Modelle wurden in Berlin ausge-stellt und in der Publikation Das wachsende Haus dokumentiert.

In 1931, Martin Wagner, head of planning for Berlin, set up a working group tasked with developing a design for a “growing” house. The group included Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius, Ludwig Hilbers-eimer, Erich Mendelssohn, Hans Poelzig, and Hans Scharoun. As an architectural response to the Great Depression and the collapse of the building industry, they formulated plans for adaptable micro-houses, which were to provide only what was necessary and expedient and whose design should be capable of being modified in accordance with the socio-economic circumstances of the inhabitants. These models were exhibited in Berlin and documented in the publi cation Das wachsende Haus (The Growing House).

Meyers Co-op Interieur war kein Vorschlag zur In nen- einrichtung. Es war ein Manifest für ein anderes Prin-zip des Wohnens und damit für eine neue Welt.

In his photographs of the corner of a room that is characterised at least as much by the absence of people, objects, and spatial features as by the distinc-tiveness of its design, Hannes Meyer gave expression to a radical, anti-bourgeois style of interior. Architec-ture and design were not meant to fulfil historically determined needs but to overcome these very con-straints. Meyer’s Co-op Interieur was not a recom-mendation for a mode of interior design but rather a manifesto proclaiming an alternative principle of housing and “living” and, by extension, a new world.

In einer Serie von drei Aufsätzen, die Friedrich Engels 1872 in der Leipziger Zeitung Der Volksstaat veröf-fentlichte, analysiert er die strukturellen Bedingungen der Wohnungsnot im Kapitalismus und polemisiert gegen reformerische Konzepte des kleinbürgerlichen Sozialismus und der Bourgeoisie. Eine vorrevolu-tionäre Verbesserung der Wohnverhältnisse lehnte er ab. Die Wohnungsfrage sei nicht mit architektoni-schen oder stadtplanerischen Konzepten zu beant-worten, sondern mit dem Umsturz der gesellschaft-lichen Verhältnisse.

In a series of three essays published by Friedrich Engels in 1872 in the Leipzig newspaper Der Volks-staat, the author analyses the structural conditions surrounding housing shortages in capitalism and delivers a polemic against the reformist ideas of middle-class socialists and the bourgeoisie. He re-jected a pre-revolutionary approach to improving living conditions. The housing question could not, in his view, be resolved with architectural ideas or urban-planning concepts but required the overthrow of social relations.

The Proletarian Building Exhibition took place in Berlin in 1931 and was developed by the Collective for a Socialist Architecture, who intended it to stand in opposition to the German Building Exhibition. Wohnungsfrage has revisited original historical docu-ments and made them the focus of discussion in a conference run in conjunction with the project bau-haus. Research into individuals like Arthur Korn, Al-exander Altberg, and Hermann Duncker and their links to projects like the CIAM, the Marxistische Arbei terschule, and the Bauhaus, as well as their con nections with the USSR, demonstrates the degree to which the networks and political attitudes of mod-ernist architecture were interwoven with one another.

Die Mietergemeinschaft Kotti & Co errichtete 2012 über Nacht ein Gecekondu am Kottbusser Tor in Berlin Kreuzberg. Verbunden mit umfangreichen Protestaktionen formierte sich die Initiative zum zen-tralen Verhandlungsort einer neuen Miet- und Stadtentwicklungspolitik sowie der Themen Migra-tion, Rassismus und Armut. Das Buch dokumentiert die Geschichte des sozialen Protests sowie zentrale Positionen von Kotti & Co. Im Rahmen von Woh-nungsfrage entwickeln Kotti & Co mit dem Archi -tekten Teddy Cruz und der Politikwissenschaftlerin Fonna Forman ein sozialräumliches Modell, das die informellen Gestaltungspraxen in der mexika ni-sche Grenzstadt Tijuana in Beziehung zu Berliner Wohnungsfragen setzt.

One night, in 2012, the tenants’ initiative Kotti & Co built a gecekondu (an informal dwelling built over-night) at Kottbusser Tor in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In conjunction with wide-ranging protest actions, the initiative formed itself into the main venue for negoti-ating new rent and urban development policies and for tackling issues relating to migration, racism, and poverty. The book documents the history of this social protest and the central role played by Kotti & Co. Within the context of the Wohnungsfrage project, Kotti & Co have teamed up with architect Teddy Cruz and political scientist Fonna Forman to develop a socio-spatial model that draws a connection between housing issues in Berlin and the informal design practices found in the Mexican border town of Tijuana.

In “Stille Straße 10” in the Pankow district of Berlin, a group of elderly people saved their meeting house from closure. The members of the group occupied the building for 112 days and took the initiative to organ-ise and run it themselves. The fate of the place is still unresolved. The London-based architecture collec-tive Assemble set up a dialogue with the group about community building, active citizenship, and housing for the elderly and have developed a housing model for Wohnungsfrage based on spaces for shared ac-tivities.

Im Frühjahr 2011 erlebt Syrien einen Aufstand der Bevölkerung gegen seine Regierung, die mit Gewalt zurückschlägt. Etwa zur gleichen Zeit beginnt der 30-jährige Aboud Saeed mit seiner ganz persönlichen Revolution – auf Facebook, wo er tägliche Statusmeldungen zur Mitschrift seines Lebens werden lässt. In Lebensgroßer Newsticker, seinem zweiten Buch, erzählt er von seiner Kindheit im Norden Syriens, der Schulzeit unter dem Baath-Regime, vom Gastarbeiterdasein im Libanon, vom Anfang des Krieges, der Flucht in die Türkei und seiner Ankunft in Deutschland. Die hier versammelten biographischen Erzählungen konzentrieren sich auf den syrischen Alltag der 1990er und 00er Jahre, eine „Zeit des Chaos im Schatten einer Familiendiktatur“. Sie handeln von den persönlichen Konflikten in den eigenen vier Wänden, denn „die kleinen Nebenkriege sind Echos der großen Kriege“.

In spring 2011, Syria witnessed a popular uprising against its government, which retaliated with a show of force. At about the same time, thirty-year-old Aboud Saeed began his own quite personal revolution – on Facebook, where he turned daily status updates into a transcript of his life. In Life-Size News Ticker, his second book, he tells of his child-hood in northern Syria, his school years under the Baath regime, his life as a migrant worker in Lebanon, the start of the war, his flight to Turkey, and his arrival in Germany. The biographical accounts collected here con cen trate on daily life in Syria in the 1990s and 2000s, a “period of chaos under the shadow of a family dictatorship”. They tell of personal conflicts within the home, because “the little incidental confrontations are echoes of the great wars”.

Aboud Saeed (*1983, Syria) currently lives in Berlin, where he was granted asylum as a political refugee. Up until November 2013 he lived in Manbidsch, a small city near Aleppo in northern Syria, where he worked as a blacksmith. He opened a Facebook account when the Syrian Revolution began in spring 2011. A selection of his status updates translated by Sandra Hetzl was published by mikrotext in 2013 under the title The Cleverest Person in Facebook.

Noise after Babel ist das Ergebnis einer künstlerisch-theoretischen Recherche. Das Buch untersucht die Vieldeutigkeit von Sprache als potentielle Basis für politisches Engagement. Die Metapher, von der die Publikation ausgeht, ist eine Verbindung der Wörter „Babel“ und „Noise“ (Rauschstörung). Sie basiert auf dem Konzept einer perfekt funktionierenden, zwangfreien Monosemie (Babel) – also der Erscheinung, dass einem sprachlichen Zeichen nur eine Bedeutung zuge-ordnet ist, die aber nach einem Eingriff bzw. Noise after Babel is the result of artistic-theoretical re-search. It examines the multi-accentuality of language as a potential ground for political engagement. Our general metaphor coupling the words “Babel” and “noise” is based on the idea of a perfectly working system of univocality

– the phenomenon whereby a linguistic term has only one meaning assigned to it – that functions without coercion (Babel) but which, after an intervention/change (loss of innocence), is replaced by an unwanted and unbearable situation (noise). The book is authored by Sezgin Boynik and Minna Henriksson, and it contains contributions by Antti ‘Eze’ Eskelinen, Alpo Jaakola, Rastko Močnik, Eetu

Moby Dick – der weiße Pottwal aus Herman Melvilles Klassiker – ist Namensgeber für Michael Beutlers Publikation, die seine Einzelausstellung im Museum für Gegenwart Berlin begleitet. Eine „work-in-progress“-Rauminstallation, bei der der Künstler während der gesamten Ausstellungsdauer die Gründerzeitarchitektur der Oberlicht-Halle im Hamburger Bahnhof in ein industrielles Materiallager verwandelt und zwar so, als würde man sich durch das Innere eines künst lichen Wals des 21. Jahrhunderts bewegen. Gipsgraue Torbögen und Durchgänge sind aus Pecafil gefertigt – einem Material, was man im Bau zur Schalung verwendet. Unter Beutlers Regie verändern leichte Metallgitter, Papier- und Zaunflächen die einstige Bahnhofshalle mit ihrer markanten Eisenskelett-Konstruktion in eine Versuchsanordnung mit offenem Aus-gang. Moby Dick – the white whale of Herman Melville’s classic novel – gives its name to Michael Beutler’s publication, which accompanies his solo exhibition at the Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin. It is a “work-in-progress” room instal-lation, for which the artist, for the duration of the exhibition’s run, is turning the mid-nineteenth-century architecture of the skylit hall in the Hamburger Bahnhof museum into an industrial warehouse, simulating the sense of movement through the innards of an artificial twenty-first-century whale. Plaster-grey arches and passageways are built of Pecafil, a material that is used in the construction industry

for shuttering. Under Beutler’s direction, light metal grilles, paper surfaces, and sections of fencing change the old station concourse with its striking iron-skeleton structure into an open-ended experimental design. Christoph Webers Buchprojekt nimmt die Entwicklung seiner künstlerischen Praxis vom methodologischen Re-enactment (Nachvollzug) bis zu seiner Auseinandersetzung mit Beton in Augenschein. Jens Kastner beginnt, anhand einer Arbeit über die Pariser Kommune “Untitled (Ramponeau)” die Schwierigkeiten von skulpturaler und politischer Kunst zu analy-sieren, während die Philosophin Sadie Plant das kulturelle und materielle Universum Beton in einem grundsätzlichen Sinne erforscht. Weber und Künstlerkollege Andreas Duscha haben speziell für die Publikation eine Versuchsanordnung entwickelt: ähnlich einem Muybridge Set-up zeigt sie eine Bewegung in Einzelbildern, die durch Lochkameras aufgenom-men wird, deren Belichtungszeit der Aushärtungsdauer von Beton entspricht. Ein Text von Andreas Duscha untersucht die Analogien zwischen Webers jüngsten Versuchen mit unausgehärtetem Beton und jener simplen Form der Fotografie.

Christoph Weber’s book project takes a close look at the development of his art practice from methodological re-enactment (Nachvollzug) to his engagement with concrete. Jens Kastner takes a work about the Paris Commune, “Untitled (Ramponeau)”, as the starting point for an analysis of the complications of sculptural and political art, while philosopher Sadie Plant delves into concrete’s very own cultural and material universe. Weber and fellow artist Andreas Duscha have developed an installation especially for this publication – akin to a Muybridge set-up, it shows

movement in single frames, using pinhole cameras with exposure times related to concrete’s curing times. A text by Andreas Duscha explores the analogies between Weber’s most recent manipulations of uncured concrete and low-tech photography.

In den letzten Jahren ist der argentinische Künstler Tomás Saraceno mit seiner Vision von Cloud Cities – fliegenden, von Menschen begehbaren, quasi bewohnbaren Strukturen – international bekannt geworden. Flying Plaza stellt eine kon-zeptuell wichtige Werkserie vor, bei der zum Fliegen und Schweben Windkraft und Sonneneinstrahlung genutzt werden. Diese aktive Form fliegender Raumstrukturen eröffnet neue Fragen zum Verhältnis des Menschen zu Natur, Kosmos und Wetter und zielt damit auf wesentliche Themenfelder des Menschseins im Anthropozän.Die Publikation stellt nicht nur die Werkgruppe, sondern in Form eines Arbeitsjournals auch die künstlerische Praxis im Studio Saraceno vor: die Projekte befinden sich hier in kontinuierlicher Fortschreibung, in einem dynamischen evolutio-nären Prozess der Realisierung. In recent years the Argentinian artist Tomás Saraceno has become known around the world for his vision of cloud cit-ies — flying, ostensibly livable structures that people can move around freely in. Flying Plaza presents a conceptu-ally important series of works, in which flying and floating are powered by the wind and solar radiation. This active form of flying physical structures raises new questions about the human relationship to nature, the cosmos, and the weather, and sets its sights on major areas of interest relat-ing to what it is to be human in the Anthropocene.This publication does not simply present this group of works but gives an insight into artistic practice in Saraceno’s

studio in the form of a work journal: the projects find them-selves being continually updated, part of a dynamic evolu-tionary process of realization — never finished, yet never merely draft versions.

Tomás Saraceno (*1973, San Miguel de Tucumán) lives and works in Berlin. He is an Argentinian performance and in-stallation artist. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 2003 and 2009 and at the International Space Studies Program at NASA, Silicon Valley, California.

Wir brauchen eine Live-Simulation, deren Maßstab der menschlichen Raumzeit entspricht, die je -doch unendlich vielgestaltig und gleichzeitig blind für unser Qualitätsempfinden ist. Eine Live-Simulation, die wir spüren können, die allerdings uns gegenüber vollkommen gleichgültig ist.“ (Ian Cheng) Die verzerrten Ansichten, mutierten Bilder und unterschiedlichen Texte sind beispielhaft für Ian Chengs Interesse an der Veränderung von Verhaltensweisen und an dem Potenzial, das in der Arbeit mit Live-Simulationen liegt. Live Simulations ist die erste Monografie, die seine künstlerische Praxis und Prinzipien in Buchform veranschaulicht.

We need live simulation at scale with human spacetime, but unending in its variety and blind to our baro-meters of quality. The distorted views, mutated images, and varied texts are exemplary of the artist’s interest in behavioural change and the potential of working with live simulations. Live Simula-tions is the first monograph to visualize Cheng’s artistic practice and make its principles tangible in book form.

Der Künstler Markus Draper findet in der eigenen Familiengeschichte visuelle Metaphern für die späte DDR. Die tabellarischen Tagebücher seines Vaters, der in den 1980er Jahren leitender Stadtplaner in Görlitz war, hat er in Malerei übersetzt. Der Titel Inge zu Fuß zur Arbeit stammt aus diesen Tagebuchaufzeichnungen und umschreibt das Gefühl der völligen Stagnation, das die DDR in ihrem letzten Jahrzehnt dominierte. In jener Zeit tauchten in den Platten-bauvierteln an den Rändern der Stadt RAF-Aussteiger unter. Draper hat Modelle solcher Plattenbauten in Metall gegos-sen. Das Buch erscheint anlässlich der Ausstellung „Inge zu Fuß zur Arbeit“ im Kulturhistorischen Museum Görlitz und enthält Essays u.a. von Clemens Klöckner, ein Interview mit dem RAF-Aussteiger Ralf B. Friedrich sowie ein Gespräch zwischen Jennifer Allen und Markus Draper.

Markus Draper finds visual metaphors for the late-period GDR in his own family history. His father was a prominent city planner in Görlitz in the 1980s and his diaries, which were laid out in tabular form, have been translated into painting by the artist. The title Inge Goes to Work on Foot comes from notes in these diaries and describes the feel-ing of complete stagnation that dominated the last decade of the GDR. During that period, former members of the Baader-Meinhof Red Army Faction (RAF) went to ground in the tower-block developments on the fringes of the city and Draper has cast metal models of these prefab high-

rises. The book is published in conjunction with the exhibi-tion of the same name at the Kulturhistorisches Museum Görlitz and includes essays by Clemens Klöckner and oth-ers, an interview with former RAF member Ralf B. Friedrich, and a discussion between Jennifer Allen and Markus Draper.

A cross-reference book of information on aesthetic bounda-ries, consisting of a bibliography into which inserted text, critical essays, art works, and documents, are arranged chronologically and focused on a selection of so-called

“greatest hits” and conceptual poetics. It contains mentions of such vaguely designated areas as appropriation, post-naive, unboring boring, détournement, object perdu, and erasure poetry – or writing through – as they currently occur (with occasional political overtones) in the work of Michalis Pichler.

This book is the first monograph focused on the practice of artist/author Michalis Pichler. Die Publikation trail geht auf einen Trampelpfad zurück, den Natascha Sadr Haghighian 2012 im Rahmen der dOCU-MENTA (13) am Auehang in Kassel anlegte. Der Pfad befand sich neben dem Ehrenmal für gefallene deutsche Soldaten des ersten und zweiten Weltkriegs und war mit onomatopoetischen Klängen bespielt. Beim Anlegen des Pfades entdeckte Sadr Haghighian, dass der Hang aus Trümmerschutt des zweiten Weltkriegs bestand. In der Publikation trail folgt sie zusammen mit Pola Sieverding und Jasper Kettner den Spuren dieser Trümmer und landet bei der in Kassel ansässigen Rüstungsindustrie, bei Geschichten der Migration und Zwangsarbeit, bei Militärfahrzeugen, die Tiernamen tragen und bei Blumen, die nur auf Trümmern wachsen. In Korrespondenzen mit Anselm Franke, Avery Gordon, Ayşe Guelec und vie-len anderen werden die Fundstücke verknüpft und befragt. Ein Blick auf die Kontinuitäten, Schleifen und Brechungen der Geschichte, der den Schichtungen des Trümmerschutts selbst gleicht.

trail harks back to a path that Natascha Sadr Haghighian laid out at the Auehang in Kassel in 2012 as part of dOCU-MENTA (13). The trail was located next to a memorial to the fallen German soldiers of the two World Wars and “ac-companied” by onomatopoeic sounds. In the process of laying out the path, Haghighian discovered that the entire slope consisted of rubble from the Second World War. In the book she follows the ‘trail’ of this debris to gether with Pola Sieverding and Jasper Kettner and ends up with the

Kassel-based armaments industry, with stories of migra-tion and forced labour, with military vehicles named after animals, and with flowers that only grow in rubble. Via an exchange of letters with Anselm Franke, Avery Gordon, Ayşe Guelec, and a number of other correspondents, the findings are linked and examined together, revealing a view of historical continuities, loops, and ruptures, resembling the layering of the debris itself.

Oh, My Complex. Vom Unbehagen beim Anblick der Stadt, eine Publikation zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung im Württem-bergischen Kunstverein Stuttgart, nähert sich den Imaginationen, Repräsentationen und Wirklichkeiten von Stadt aus unterschiedlichen Richtungen: von den architektonischen und urbanen Konstruktionen der 1930er Jahre bis heute; von Europa und den USA bis Asien; aus den Perspektiven der Kunst, Ausstellungs-, Pop- und Protestkulturen seit den 1970er Jahren. Im Mittelpunkt stehen künstlerische Arbeiten, die den ideologischen Implikationen urbaner Visionen nachgehen. Gemeint sind jene Visionen, wie sie sich in den modernistischen Utopien der Stadt, in den Modellen der neo-liberalen Boomtown, aber auch in den Krisenszenarien manifestieren. Unsere kollektiven Vorstellungswelten sind von ihnen seit den 1970er Jahren geprägt – nicht zuletzt seit dem Erscheinen des Bestsellers Die Grenzen des Wachstums von Dennis Meadows (1972).

Oh, My Complex: On Unease at Beholding the City, pub-lished in tandem with the exhibition of the same name at the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart, approaches the imaginative conceptions, representations, and realities of the city from different directions: from the architectural and urban constructions of the 1930s up to the present: from Europe and the USA to Asia; from the perspectives of art and exhibition, pop, and protest cultures from the 1970s on.

The main focus is on artistic works that trace the ideological implications of urban visions — as they manifest not only in the modernist utopias of the city and the models of the neo-liberal boomtown but also in crisis scenarios. Our collective imaginary worlds have been shaped by these visions since the 1970s, influenced in no small part by the publication of Dennis Meadows’s 1972 bestseller The Limits to Growth.

Im Jahr 2019 wird das Bauhaus 100 Jahre alt. Inwieweit kann uns die Vergangenheit des Bauhauses noch Antworten auf Gestaltungsfragen der Gegenwart bieten und umgekehrt: Können uns aus unseren heutigen Erfahrungen heraus auch überraschende Einsichten in die frühe Moderne des letzten Jahrhunderts erwachsen? In 2019 the Bauhaus will celebrate its hundredth anniver-sary! Preparations for the centenary have raised a host of questions: To what extent is the Bauhaus tied to a place, and how can its essence be conveyed in a museum? How can the tension between school and museum – in particular the Bauhaus and its everyday presence – be given a productive role in fashioning new models of cultural education? What stimuli can the Bauhaus provide for a critical practice in today’s globalized world?

Die Besetzung des Gezi-Parks durch ein paar hundert Leute explodierte 2013 zur größten Protestbewegung in der türkischen Geschichte. Die Zeichnungen und Notizen in Bostanorama umkreisen dieses Ereignis. Noch ist fast nichts erreicht, doch kündigt sich in der Art des Protests etwas an, was für emanzipatorische Bewegungen weltweit wichtige Nachrichten enthalten könnte.Bostanorama lehnt sich an die „Bostans“ an, jene kleinen urbanen Farmen, die seit 600 Jahren in der türkischen Metro pole existieren. Die Zeichenserie war eine der meistbeachteten und getwitterten Arbeiten während der 13. Istanbul Biennale. Bostanorama erscheint im Zeitungsformat und wird begleitet von einem Essay des Künstlers, dessen garten-geschichtliche und raumtheoretische Dimension ein Protestfastenbrechen in Yeniköy rasant verknüpft mit Fussballfans, Friseuren, Aktivisten und muslimischen Hardwarehändlerinnen in Kaghitane, Besiktas und St. Pauli.

The occupation of Gezi Park by a few hundred people in 2013 snowballed to become the largest protest movement in Turkish history. The sketches and jottings in Bostano-rama revolve around this event. Almost nothing has been achieved as yet, but something made its presence felt in the nature of the protest that might be a harbinger of crucial information for emancipatory movements around the world. Bostanorama is inspired by the bostans, the small urban farms that have been part of life in the Turkish metropolis for the last six hundred years. The series of drawings was

one of the most acclaimed and tweeted works at the 13th Istanbul Biennial. Bostanorama is published in newspaper format and is accompanied by an essay by the artist, whose take on spatial theory and the history of gardens dynami-cally combines a protesters’ fast-breaking in Yeniköy with football fans, barbers, activists, and Muslim hardware dealers in Kaghitane, Besiktas, and St Pauli.

Genossenschaften, Sharing Community, Co-Housing – das Kollektiv hat Konjunktur. Fragen zum Verhältnis von Gesell-schaft und Gestaltung, von individueller und gemeinschaftlicher Kreation und Produktion wurden bereits Ende der 1920er Jahre intensiv am Bauhaus verhandelt: Besonders der zweite Bauhausdirektor Hannes Meyer richtete Lehre und Werk-stätten, Planung und Architektur radikal am Kollektiv und seinen Bedürfnissen aus. Revolutionär war besonders Meyers Idee eines gemeinschaftlichen Gestaltungsprozesses. Diesem sogenannten Coop-Prinzip widmet sich nun erstmals eine Ausstellung im Bauhaus Dessau vom 21. Mai bis 4. Oktober 2015.

Cooperatives, sharing communities, co-housing – the col-lective is in high demand. At the end of the 1920s the Bauhaus took a keen interest in addressing questions surrounding the relationship between society and design, between individual and collaborative creation and produc-tion. The second Bauhaus director Hannes Meyer played a key role here radically orienting the school’s teaching and workshops and its planning and architecture around the idea and needs of the collective. Meyer’s concept of a collaborative design process was particularly revolutionary. This so-called co-op principle is now the subject of an exhibition at the Dessau Bauhaus running from 21 May to 4 October 2015.

Hannes Meyer (1889 – 1954), Swiss architect and second director of the Bauhaus in Dessau from 1928 to 1930. He emigrated to the Soviet Union, and subsequently to Mexico City, where he worked as the director of the Instituto del Urbanismo y Planificación.

Ab 2015 erscheint die Zeitschrift Bauhaus einmal jährlich. Im Zentrum des Heftes steht jeweils das Jahresthema. Die Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau widmet 2015 ihr Magazin dem „Kollektiv“ und hat dabei auch Individualisten, Querdenker und Solisten im Blick. Die „Bauhäusler“ – dazu gehörten Lehrende und Studierende, aber auch Freunde der Schule – ver-standen sich in den Zwanzigerjahren als Angehörige eines gestaltenden Lern-, Arbeits- und Experimentier-Kollektivs, das nicht nur die Produkte und Visionen eines neuen Lebens entwarf, sondern diese auch am eigenen Beispiel testete. Tenor und Kontext der Kollektiv-Auffassung veränderte sich in den 14 Bauhausjahren mehrfach: von der romantischen Idee einer klösterlich-elitären Visions-Gemeinschaft über genossenschaftliche Kollektivmodelle bis hin zu liberalen Team- und Netzwerkideen.

As of 2015 the Bauhaus journal will be published once a year, with that year’s selected topic as the central feature of the issue. The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation is devoting its 2015 edition of the magazine to the “collective” and thus focuses on individualists, unorthodox thinkers, and solo artists. In the 1920s the Bauhäusler – a group that includes not only teachers and students but also friends of the school – saw themselves as members of a creative

collective devoted to learning, working, and experimentation. They not only designed the products and visions of a new life but also tested them using their own models. The tenor and context of the collective concept changed several times in the fourteen years of the Bauhaus’ existence: from the romantic notion of a cloistered community with an elitist vision via a model of cooperative collectivism to liberal ideas of team collaboration and networking.

Leerstehende Apartmentanlagen, brachliegende Infrastrukturen und ein enormer Landschafts ver-brauch in Spanien sind nur der manifeste Ausdruck eines Urbanisierungsmodells, dass seit den 1990er Jahren weltweit einen spekulationsgetriebenen Bau-boom in Gang gesetzt hat. Die Transformation von immobilem Land in ein spekulatives „financial Asset“ stimulierte rund um den Globus die Produktion stan-dardisierter Wohnkomplexe, Ferienresorts und Büro-anlagen. Das internationale Bauhaus Lab hat dieses spekulationsgetriebene Modell der Urbani sierung in Spanien untersucht.

Spain’s speculative landscapes may be perceived as a test zone for a model of global urbanization that was introduced with neo-liberalization in the 1990s. The huge vacancy rate and the consumption of the landscape in the absence of users and low levels of demand testify to the dubiousness of a form of archi-tectural production that is based purely on the speculative value of the built objects. Bauhaus Lab has developed critical positions, counter-models, and projects that engage with the implications of this form of urbanization.

In den 1950er Jahren galten Levittowns als Rollen-modell amerikanischer Vorstädte. Der Sprawl des 21. Jahrhunderts hat sich vom Bezug zur Stadt gelöst. Suburbia ist zudem ein globales Phänomen, ein Großteil der Weltbevölkerung wohnt, arbeitet und konsumiert hier. Die Levittowns bildeten den Aus-gangspunkt einer Studie zur Globalisierung der Sub-urbia: das Prinzip der sozialen Segregation schreibt sich nun in „Neotowns“ und „masterplanned commu-nities“ global fort.

The Levittowns of the 1950s were role models of American suburbanization. Twenty-first-century ur-ban sprawl has increasingly abandoned its relation-ship to the city. Suburbia is today a global phenom-enon, with most of the world’s population living, working, and spending their money here. The Levit-towns served as the starting point for a study of the globalization of suburbia: the principle of social segregation is now being carried on around the world in “new towns” and “master-planned communities”.
