YANGON PHOTO FESTIVAL 11th EDITION

Every February, “concerned” photographers from all over the region as well as from Europe and the US converge on Yangon to share their latest powerful stories with a large audience in the heart of the city. More than 200 artists works and short photo-documentaries will be shown this year, half of them from Kayah, Chin, Kachin, and Rakhine States, where we recently gave training and organized photo festivals.

Reflecting the urgency of the threats to humankind, the theme of these works is more and more related to environmental issues. The Arctic Ocean is warming at an alarming rate and the whole world is feeling the effects, in particular Myanmar, which is suffering from a long series of droughts, floods, extreme heat, and cyclones. French photographer Francis Latreille brings us the extraordinary story of Tara, a sailboat with a team of scientists on board that was deliberately trapped in pack ice for almost two years.

It drifted for more than 2500 kilometers—a journey undertaken without engine or sail—to study the phenomena related to climate change in high latitudes. According to the latest UN report, we have only twelve years to limit the climate catastrophe.

Another terrifying recent report explains that humanity has wiped out an astonishing 60% of global wildlife since 1970 due to pollution, deforestation, and other manmade factors. Myanmar is still home to one of the largest populations of wild Asian elephants in Southeast Asia, shows Burmese photographer Ko Myo, but they could be wiped out within ten years due to cruel poaching, territorial conflicts with humans, and illegal trade along the border with China.

The photo book is not just a book showcasing a collection of images: it is an art form in itself, with growing importance on the international photography scene. In many cases of photographic storytelling, the photo book has become the final narrative to which most attention has been given, and it is turned into an object that represents the story in a tactile form.

Swiss Art Council Pro Helvetia and Guari Galeri from Indonesia will display dozens of books. We will also discover the results of a book-making workshop in the form of dummy books.

Artists Chloé Tun Tun, Anton Ismael, and Naztia Haryanti will exhibit their work in giant book form.

A special correspondent for Getty Images, John Moore has photographed undocumented immigration to the United States for 10 years, always with the intent of humanizing a complex issue. His photos contextualize the migrants’ dangerous journey from Central America and the U.S. government’s attempt to stop them at the border. Moore’s rare access to U.S. immigration prisons, including detention centers for children, is unparalleled. His 2018 photograph “Girl Crying On the Border” was published worldwide, and created an emotional debate over current U.S. policy. His fairness in covering all sides of the story sets his work apart.

In the northernmost point of Siberia lives a dwindling population of ice nomads: the Dolgans and the Nenets. They are the living witnesses of the effects of our planet’s climate change.

Francis Latreille discovered the Dolgans in 1997. In the tundra’s extreme climate, where temperatures can drop below 50°C, the Dolgans survive by hunting, fishing, and breeding reindeer.

The receding of the ice each summer is disturbing the lifestyle of the herders but has also increased discoveries of preserved mammoths; in 2006, Latreille recorded the discovery of a baby mammoth that had resurfaced after lying frozen for 40,000 years.

The Arctic Ocean is warming faster than any other region on Earth, and the world is already feeling the effects: rising sea levels and severe weather events. The Tara sailboat was deliberately trapped in pack ice in the Arctic Ocean. It emerged almost two years later, after drifting more than 2500 kilometers—an extraordinary journey undertaken without engine or sail.

The scientists on board had to survive in extreme conditions to study the phenomena related to climate change in high latitudes. They conducted studies in the atmosphere up to an altitude of 2000 meters, and in the Arctic Ocean to a depth of more than 4000 meters.

Myanmar is the third-most vulnerable country in the world to the effects of climate change, particularly droughts, floods, and cyclones.

Climate change refers to a broad range of global phenomena mostly created by burning fossil fuels, which add heat-trapping gases to the Earth’s atmosphere. These phenomena include increased temperature trends (global warming) but also encom-pass changes such as sea level rise because of mass loss of ice in the polar regions, shifts in flower/plant blooming, and extreme weather events.

The situation is particularly acute in Myanmar because 75 percent of livelihoods depend on agriculture, which is now threatened by droughts, floods, and storms.

Humanity has wiped out an astonishing 60% of global wildlife since 1970 due to pollution, deforestation, and other manmade factors. The annihilation of mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles is now an emergency that threatens civilization.

Myanmar is still home to one of the largest populations of wild Asian elephants in Southeast Asia, but specialists are warning that they could be wiped out within ten years because of poaching, human/elephant conflicts, and illegal trade along the border with China. Since 2015, Burmese photographer Ko Myo has made repeated journeys into remote jungles across the country to document Myanmar's battle to save its elephants.

Myanmar photographer Minzayar Oo has been documenting Myanmar’s hardly accessible jade mines for years. 90% of the world’s highest-quality jade comes from Kachin State. This trade is worth billions of dollars annually, yet, according to studies by international watch groups, only a small fraction of the profits benefit the country’s citizens.

The “cursed treasure” is also responsible for huge environmental damage, corruption, conflict, and drug addiction, and remains one of the most challenging issues that Myanmar faces. This exhibition is presented in collaboration with Natural Resource Governance Institute.

Myanmar’s diverse landscapes contain rich natural resources, from oil and gas reserves to vast gemstone and mineral deposits, along with some of the region’s largest intact forests.

However, lack of regulation or oversight has led to an industry plagued by corruption and conflicts, which continue to have a damaging impact on communities and environments throughout the country.

UNEARTH is a project that documents the social and environmental impacts of Myanmar’s extractives sector. It is managed by Myanmar Deitta in Yangon and supported by the Natural Resource Governance Institute.

U Than Maung (1918–1992) was one of the founders of theBurmese Photographic Society (card member No.1) and one ofMyanmar’s most important amateur photographers.

He understood that the events of his lifetime had to be documented for future generations. Sadly, most of his material from before independence has been lost. The images presented in this exhibition and the accompanying book show a devastating and yet hopeful period in Myanmar’s history.

U Than Maung’s love for his family and kinsmen are depicted in many of his wonderful portraits. His craftsmanship in the darkroom, along with his artistic colouring skills, was also remarkable.

With the advent of smartphones, the practice of photography has become universal; it is an essential part of the new language used on social media. In some cases, it can also be a very effective form of personal therapy.

In our first exhibition, Bay Bay, a 27-year-old Myanmar artist, deals with her alcoholism through self-analytical photo-montages and drawings. Creating acts like a rope to keep her afloat and help counter her anxieties.

The second exhibition is by Wonder, a Sichuanese artist who makes self-portraits with her body in order to deal with the trauma of an accident that left scars on her face.

Philip Adolphe Klier and D.A. Ahuja were two of the most important image-makers from Myanmar’s early colonial era. They form an integral part of Myanmar’s visual heritage, and their reproductions have been used in many different forms, yet we know very little about their lives. These images were created by commercial photographers during the colonial period, and we must rethink the original historical context that influenced their production. The question we ask in this exhibition is: what do these images really tell us about life in Myanmar 100 years ago?
