DUT Introduction

Dalian University of Technology

Dalian University of Technology

DUT is located in the beautiful city of

Dalian, in northeastern China’s Liaoning

Province. It is one of the key universities

under the direct administration of Ministry

of Education, China. Over 60 years of

development, DUT has achieved a well-

recognized reputation as one of the top

universities sponsored by China’s “985

Project” and “211 Project”. DUT is a

comprehensive university of science and

technology, with engineering as its main

strength, and other disciplines keeping

abreast including applied sciences,

economics, management science and

technology, humanities and social science.

There are many university dining halls and

all sorts of restaurants, banks, convenience

stores, clinic, post-office around the

campus. It also has gymnasium with

various kinds of sports facilities in the

campus, such as swimming pool,

basketball, volleyball, tennis and so on.

DUT enjoys a good reputation for its

efficient and disciplined management and

its productive academic environment. The

university operates by its motto of “Unity,

Enterprise, Realism, and Originality”. DUT

is focused on implementing the best

education strategies with the hope of

building DUT into a world-famous,

research-oriented university.

Coursework and Curriculum

Students in the program will have

environment, language and Chinese culture

related classes (in English) in the morning,

Monday through Thursday. Each class will

have between 15 and 20 students. For the

environmental program, students will take

courses like Introduction to Chinese

environmental policy, Environmental

technology developments, pay a study visit

to Dalian Municipal Bureau of

Environmental Protection for a greater

understanding and insight of the issues

they have learned. What’s more, field trip

to waste disposal factories and volunteer

activities will be arranged during the whole

program.

The language training mainly focuses

on practical Chinese. Program participants

will have one on one Chinese language

partners. Previously available courses

include: Chinese environmental policy,

environmental technology development,

Chinese Calligraphy, Taichi, Chinese Painting

and Chinese Paper-cut. Credits will be

offered for all courses. Free excursions such

as city tours and visits will also provide

participants the opportunity to meet their

fellow students and explore the city of

Dalian. On weekends, participants will take

cultural tours around China. (at own

expense) Time: July 21 ~ August 11, 2013 Classes Monday to Thursday from 8:00 ~ 12:00 and 13:30 ~ 15:30. The course corresponds to 8 ECTS credits.

Main Courses:

1. Basic Chinese [32hrs]

Contents: oral Chinese, basic grammar, reading and writing at beginning/intermediate level

2. Survey of China [English] [6 hrs]

Contents: General introduction of contemporary China including Chinese geography, politics, economy and regional features

3. Chinese Culture [English] [12hrs]

Contents: China’s ancient civilization, Confucius & Confucianism, Chinese traditional festival, Chinese Traditional Musical Instruments

4. Environmental technology developments [English] [6hrs]

Contents: Chinese environment policy, Environmental Protection in China, Environmental Protection & Sustainable Development, Eco-economics & Green Consumerism

5. Field work and visits

Contents: waste treatment factory visit, study visit to Dalian Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection, interviews, seminars, group volunteer activities [beach trash collection]

⌘ Guided tours to Xi’an and Dandong will be arranged on the

two weekends at the students’ own expenses.

Accommodations

Accommodations will be made at Ph.D &

International Students Dormitory, and program

participants will be offered multiple options:

Ph.D & International Students Dormitory:

Fee: Single room 120 CNY/Day

Double room 60 CNY/Day

Amenities: Bathroom, Shower, and Internet Access.

Two beds in each room and single room may be

available on request.

Food

Students have a multitude of dining options within

walking distance of campus. Students will be able to

eat in the University dining hall or at any of the many

local restaurants immediately off campus. A public

kitchen is also available for participants who would

like to prepare their own food. The approximate daily

cost of food is 40-70 CNY.
