Dear Friends of the Art Center,

Good evening and welcome to the Ann Arbor Art Center’s third annual

Vine & Dine fundraising event! The Art Center is very fortunate to have

so many passionate supporters of the visual arts and culture in the

community. We are especially grateful to you for joining us here tonight

to celebrate our accomplishments and share in the excitement of what

    lies ahead.

Our mission is to connect art with people, places, and purpose. While

we do this from the historic Ann Arbor Art Center premises, not

all connections happen within our four walls. Because art can’t be

contained; it grows, evolves, and expands organically. Art is bigger than

all of us, but needs support and nurturing. When that is done right, it is

    inspirational, rewarding, and powerful.

Funds raised from this evening’s event will fuel our ability to provide

excellence and impact in the visual arts through our creative classes

and camps, thought-provoking exhibitions, engaging outreach

initiatives, and our gallery shop that proudly showcases the work of

    local artists.

Tonight’s live auction will feature a host of exciting options for your

bidding. Please bid often and bid to win — your win helps us all win by

assuring that the arts continue to thrive in our community.

Thank you so much for joining us this evening. We are grateful to all of

you for your support. Special thanks are extended to our Event Co-

Chairs, JPaul and Kerri Dixon, our Host Committee members, as well as

to our generous, community-minded title corporate sponsor, Hylant.

    Enjoy your evening!

    With heartfelt thanks,

    Marie

Lot #1   We’re having a Kid’s Art Party and You’re Invited!Donated by The Ann Arbor Art Center and Domino’s Pizza

Celebrate any special occasion for your youngsters and their friends with a fun and colorful artistic activity in the heart of beautiful downtown Ann Arbor. At the Ann Arbor Art Center’s historic space, creativity can run free as we offer one-of-a-kind art projects that each guest will take home. Your party will include a professional art instructor, art supplies, and set-up. To top it off, we will order hot fresh pizza for you and your guests. You pick the date and send the invites for up to 15 guests (ages 6-12) and we take care of the rest.

    Choose between two art activities:

Paint Your Own Pottery: Each participant will create their own unique design on a functional piece of pottery using colorful underglazes. The Art Center will add a shiny clear coat of food-safe glaze to the pottery and fire it in the kiln to finish it off.

Acrylic Paint on Canvas: Guests will find their inner Monet by creating a beautiful masterpiece on a crisp white canvas. A professional art instructor will guide party guests through the wonder of painting and at the end, the art will be ready to hang on the wall.

Lot #2 Food for All Seasons – Personal Cooking LessonsDonated by Chef Andrew Benjamin

Design your own gourmet cooking experience — and then enjoy a great meal! Executive Chef Andrew Benjamin will guide a group of six through a meal in a style of your choosing, in your own home. He spent 5 years in Slovakia, including time as the Executive Chef to the Ambassador. He returned to Ann Arbor to join the family business on its 30th anniversary.

Lot #3   Six Magnums – 2014 Château St Cosme – Côtes du Rhône, France Six Bottles – 2011 Mark Herold Wines – Flux Blend, CaliforniaDonated by Richard and Karen Brown

Château de Saint Cosme is owned and operated by the irrepressible couple, Louis and Cherry Barroul, master craftsmen of Rhône Valley wines from both the northern and southern sectors. My notes on this 2014 Côtes du Rhône: Est. 1490; on cobbles near Gigondas; Syrah emphasis. Deep, large, dark, earthy southern Syrah concentration. Bold, broad, and powerful, dense and sweet. Really very strong and ripe for the coolest year since 2008. A touch roti even. Good acid and form. Strong (14%). Dark fruited Syrah basis. Palate really solid and ample, albeit less revealing than the nose at this stage. 91+/100.

Robert Parker comments, “A successful effort, the 2011 Flux is composed of 68% Grenache, 17% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre. It offers up ripe, peppery, spicy, earthy notes as well as abundant fruit (a good sign for a 2011). Consume this soft red over the next several years.

Mark Herold, a well-known consultant, first came to my attention because of the brilliant wines he produced under the name Merus, a brand that has been sold. He now fashions a line-up of interesting and off-beat, hip wines that are priced realistically for as good as they are. His selections called Flux, Acha and Collide are usually blends ranging from white Rhone varietals to red Rhone and Spanish varietals.”

Lot #4   For the Love of Wine – Sampler for TwoDonated by Dick and Sally Scheer of Village Corner

This epic event package is ideal for the consummate wine enthusiast and represents four individual wine tasting experiences where you will learn, taste, socialize, and have an opportunity to purchase unique wines from around the globe.

Lot #5   Drinks and Dinner in Detroit for SixDonated by Guy and Robin Suter

Indulge in the new culinary offerings that are putting Detroit on the food map in America. The evening for six begins with luxury limousine transportation to Detroit where your night will start with drinks and a tour at Two James Spirits in Corktown. Opening in mid-2013 — the first licensed distillery in Detroit since Prohibition — it has gained a reputation across the region for its craft spirits and creative cocktails. Then cross Michigan Avenue and enjoy the creations of Chef Brad Greenhill at Katoi — Detroit’s “Restaurant of the Year” in 2015. Chef Greenhill is known for his perfect amount of spice and explosion of complex flavors at this Asian-inspired restaurant which will be present throughout your multi-course dinner.

Lot #6   Twelve Bottles – Boudreaux Cellars – Merlot, Leavenworth, WADonated by Richard and Karen Brown

Robert Parker: “Imagine my amazement not merely at sticking my nose into a glass of Merlot and saying “smells like toasted hickory wood,” but on top of that being told by the vigneron (in Cajun intonation) “well, that’s ‘cause nearly half of the barrels were made out of toasted hickory.” And come to find out, this is hardly the only weird thing you’ll encounter in wines from former professional alpinist and inventor, para-glider, fly-fisherman and singer-songwriter Rob Newsom, who says he let himself get talked into winemaking by fellow fisherman Gary Figgins, and crushed his first grapes in 1998. Newsom’s self-constructed winery and cellar deep in a canyon of the Cascade Mountains some eighty miles east of Seattle as the crow flies, are just off aptly-named Icicle Creek and also off the power grid, enforcing a regimen of low-tech that should embarrass most vintners who go on about how that’s their way of doing things. Following crushing and “punching the hell out of them” during fermentations controlled only by a naturally frigid ambiance, Newsom’s reds go into barrel to remain undisturbed for a minimum of two years, at which point they are frequently either held there or moved to wooden uprights for another 6-12 months élevage. These are the sorts of wines inexperienced or non-intuitive vintners might be well advised not to try imitating in their cellars — and indeed, typify the dark path that professional and professorial oenologists beseech their clients and students not to tread on fear of perdition. There is a welcome and unexpected levity to many of them, incidentally, from alcohol levels below (often well below) 14%, achieved with a bit of divine intervention (a.k.a. Jesus Units). These wines are unlike any others I have encountered, and the best of them are unforgettably good.”

Lot #7   One Bottle – 1970 Grand Vin de Chateau Latour – Pauilla

One Bottle – 1970 Château du Moulin Rouge – Haut-Medoc

One Bottle – 1980 Château Leoville – Las Cases – Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de Las Cases – St. Julien

One Bottle – 1980 Maison Louis Latour – Côte de Beaune – VillagesDonated by Karen Crawford and Bill Welch

Wine Spectator 91 says about the 1970 Grand Vin de Château Latour: “Elegant and gorgeous to drink now. Peaked. Ruby red color with an amber edge. Lovely aromas of plum, berry and mint. Full-bodied, with currant, dried herb character.”

The Château Moulin Rouge family property is located in the municipality of Cussac Fort Medoc, in an exceptional environment between the prestigious appellations of Margaux and Saint-Julien-Beychevelle. Recognized professionals such as Robert Parker like to compare the wines of Château Moulin Rouge those of its neighbors harvested Beychevelle.

Ranked 2me Grand Cru Classe, Leoville Las Cases makes a durable claret of high cabernet sauvignon content, aged mainly in new oak barrels. High in fruit and oak tannins, it requires many years to achieve maturity.

The 1980 Maison Louis Latour is an assemblage of pinot noir grapes from the lesser known villages of the Côtes du Beaune, skillfully blended by the venerable négociant master, Louis Latour.

A very special thank you to Dick Scheerfor researching and writing the wine lot

    descriptions for tonight’s auction .

“ I am writing to express my deepest gratitude in your making it possible for me to take a ceramics class at the AAAC this January.
