Description: This program will build strong relationships and promote self confidence in our students. Self confidence has a positive impact in the workplace, on the school and the legal profession. Hosting this event at an outside venue shows the school’s mission of service to the students and the community. The Welcome Back to School Professional Social is a great way for 2Ls and 3Ls to get intimately acquainted with the incoming first year students. Students mingle, share advice, exchange educational information, and build a feeling of confidence and acceptance through networking. Most importantly, this event is for first year, second year, third year and evening students. The event will also give BLSA’s undergraduate interns (prospective law students) an opportunity to network with law students.

Description: The Essence of Ebony program celebrates the beauty of Black culture through many forms of dance, visual art, spoken word and music. Through its celebration of history, the program promotes the talents of our law students and provides a welcoming atmosphere for students to relax and enjoy one another. One of the organization’s goal is to, increase self awareness (talent) in our school and community. It is important to know about the talents of each person in order to network effectively and efficiently. This event is open to all law students and the university community. Your contribution will help with food and beverage costs.

Description: The Professional Networking Reception will include students from the surrounding law, medical, and business schools. It will also include business professionals, alumni and lawyers from the surrounding area. Students will have the opportunity to ask important questions and gain advice, mentorship opportunities and build strong relationships with others who are well connected in the community. The atmosphere will be relaxing and informal and the attire will be business professional. This program promotes the organization’s professional networking goals.

Description: The Second Semester Midterm Scholarship Fundraiser is a celebration of success. It will be held after the first year students take their midterms. This program is open to all first year, second year, and third year law students. This program promotes progress and encourages students to celebrate the completion and success of another year in law school. In addition, the funds raised will go towards a scholarship. Throughout the year, BLSA will offer students many different financial scholarships including Kaplan and Barbri bar review scholarships. However, the amount of scholarships offered depends on fundraising and sponsorship.

Description: The HLSA BLSA SALSA is a celebration of Hispanic and African American culture. Professionals will display a brief celebration of dance to expose the ethnic differences between Hispanics and Blacks. The event will also promote a breathtaking atmosphere full of relaxation and comfort for law students. Students will be involved in ice breakers that will foster cultural and ethnic discussions. This program will promote diversity between minority groups.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Description: The Week of Welcome Community Service Fair kicks off the school year by welcoming incoming freshman's, graduate students and law students. The program highlights community service based organizations students can join. NCCU BLSA is a partner organization with the university’s service learning program. This program benefits students since undergraduates and graduate students may receive community service hours for participating in BLSA’s community service programs. This program benefits the school because it promotes the visibility of NCCU Law BLSA, and exemplifies the university’s mission of truth and service.

Innocense Project Week:INNOCENCE PROJECT: Innocence Project Awareness, Community ProgramDate: February 17, 2011Time: 7:00 PMLocation:NCCU School of LawAttendance: Approximately 75 people

Description: The Innocence project locates people who, despite being found guilty in court, may actually be innocent of the crimes for which they were convicted. The Innocence Project tries to exonerate innocent people. NCCU BLSA’s goal is to raise awareness about the innocence of many Americans living in the United States and the surrounding community. By raising awareness, we hope to inspire our fellow law students to balance the scales of justice. Law students will have the opportunity to network with other lawyers. They will also gain invaluable knowledge about the trial and advocacy process used by Innocence Project professionals. This program shows the school’s dedication to pro bono and public interest work. The program will also benefit undergraduates interning with BLSA’s Directors.

Description: NCCU BLSA will partner with the NCCU Law Innocence Project to share the stories of the wrongfully convicted. This panel series will expose the painful truth of how a wrongful conviction can destroy lives. A part of life they can never regain. This program will benefit students who are dedicated to pro-bono, clinic work and public interest work. It will help those students network by being involved in life changing meaningful work that promotes community advancement. This program benefits the school’s mission of truth and service.

Description: The Fall Professional Clothing Drive is a month long event. This event will support homeless shelters, the Salvation Army and other non profit organizations dedicated to helping needy families and other less fortunate individuals. This program is free, however, we will accept donations. All donations will support the needs of homeless shelters. This program supports the University’s mission of truth and service. It also supports the organization’s dedication to community advancement.

COMMUNITY SERVICE WEEK: Kinder Care-Early Development (Safe Halloween Event)Date: October 30, 2011Time: TBALocation:NCCU Child Development CenterAttendance: Approximately 35 people

Description: NCCU BLSA believes in providing service to their campus. We also believe that the true growth of productive and responsible citizens start in the early development stage. This event will educate NCCU’s child development center students on the importance of safety, responsibility, citizenship and social awareness. Most of all, it will provide a fun and comfortable atmosphere during the dangerous Halloween season. This program will benefit NCCU School of Law since law students will represent NCCU Law in a professional and responsible way.

Description: Habitat for Humanity is one of NCCU BLSA’s annual events. NCCU Law students will help Habitat for Humanity build decent, affordable housing for people in need. Building homes is synonymous to building hope and rebuilding the community. This event is a free service event. We appreciate the support of our sponsors.

ANNUAL HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE

Description: NCCU BLSA will partner with other Law School organizations to organize a university-wide canned food drive. The food drive will collect canned foods and non perishable items to support needy shelters during the holiday season. All donations will support shelters during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT ADOPT A CLASS: HillSide High SchoolDate: September 25, 2011,Time: TBA by HillSide High School AdministrationLocation: HillSide High SchoolAttendance: Approximately 15 Law students

Description: NCCU BLSA will adopt HillSide High School and partner with the pro-bono Street Law Clinic, to educate high school juniors and seniors on important topics. These topics include the rights of minors in the criminal justice system (search and seizure), the political process (legislation), voting rights issues, and the importance of community service. This program will also register students to vote. The Youth Empowerment program benefits the school by supporting NCCU Law’s clinical programs.

SHELTER VISITS: Date: September 30, 2011, rotate every other Friday.Time: TBALocation: Rotate to NC SheltersAttendance: Approximately 35 participants per visit

Description: NCCU BLSA will visit a North Carolina shelter every other Friday beginning on September 30, 2011. We will support the shelters by volunteering our time and provide the shelter with nonperishable food items.

ANGEL TREE / SECRET SANTA:Date: November 16, 2011Time: TBALocation: Boys and Girls ClubAttendance: Approximately 65 participants and donors

Description: NCCU BLSA will partner with the local Boys and Girls Club to create gifts for needy families and kids. The Boys and Girls Club will conduct an activity to understand the specific needs of the children in their programs. NCCU BLSA will try their best to provide for these needs through donations and fundraising efforts. This program will benefit the school through service to needy families and the community. It will also promote the school’s mission of service to all mankind.

M.L.K. DAY OF SERVICE:Date: November 25, 2011Time: All DayLocation: NCCU School of LawAttendance: 15 participants

Description: NCCU BLSA will participate in the National Community Service Organization’s MLK Challenge. We will conduct a community clean up around NCCU School of Law. We will also send a care package and a letter to a soldier deployed overseas. This program will benefit the school since it will promote the school’s name in the international community. It will benefit students through the support of a law student’s family who has relatives serving overseas.

The Environmental Service Project will take place in January 2012. More information is coming soon.

ACADEMIC, SCHOLARSHIP & CAREER

PROFESSIONALISM DEVELOPMENT PODCASTDate: October 2011Time: TBALocation: NCCU School of LawAttendance: Approximately 15 students

Description:The Podcast Series features professionals from across the country highlighting their experiences and discussing key attributes that law students must have in order to integrate into career building. The two primary focuses for this year's objectives include: branding and nontraditional careers. Our series will include but are not limited to topics that will highlight critical areas that are important for law students to hone in on in regards to being successful academically. This series will allow our students to learn from attorneys across the country and provide networking opportunities with big name attorneys.

REGIONAL ACADEMIC RETREAT.Date: September 10, 2011Time: 9:00 am-5:00 pmLocation: TBAAttendance: Approximately 25 students

Description: The Academic Retreat will bring together law students from both North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina; along with attorneys and other professionals in the legal field to discuss how to achieve and maintain academic success. This event is an all-day event that divides 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls and allows them to learn different strategies on excelling in their classes. It also includes judges, attorneys and firm recruiters for networking opportunities. This event will benefit law students by teaching them techniques to achieve academic success during and after law school.

E-CAREER CONSULTANT SERIES:Date: October 2011Time: TBALocation: TBAAttendance: approximately 32 students

Description: The E-Career Consultant Series is a teleconference call by which students from all over the country will dial in and listen to an interview between the attorney and the National Director of Academic & Career Development. At the end of each session law students may ask financial and career planning advice from a professional advisor and consultant. These series will allow our students to learn from attorneys across the country about key areas of the legal field.

PROFESSIONALISM SUPER LAWYER SERIES: Dress for SuccessDate: October 20, 2011Time: 6:00 pm-7:00 pmLocation: NCCU School of LawAttendance: Approximately 65 students

Description: The Professionalism Super Lawyer Series is a series of programs dedicated to career planning, job searching and improving professional skills. The Dress for Success program is a co program with the Women’s Law Caucus. It will reveal the professional way to dress in the classroom, at programs at interviews and at work. This program will benefit students by preparing them for a successful career during and after law school. The program benefits the school by promoting school pride and professionalism.

PROFESSIONALISM SUPER LAWYER SERIES: Resume Writing WorkshopDate: November 2, 2011Time: 5:00 pm-6:00 pmLocation: TBAAttendance: Approximately 70 students

Description: The resume writing workshop is the second part of the Professionalism Super Lawyer Series. The resume writing workshop focus’s on efficient and effective resume writing skills that will attract hiring managers. The resume writing workshop will include hiring managers, and career services staff members. This program will help students prepare for their summer internships and employment after law school.

PROFESSIONALISM SUPER LAWYER SERIES: Mock InterviewsDate: February 9, 2012Time: 5:00 pm-6:00 pmLocation: TBAAttendance: approximately 60 students

Description: The mock interviews is the third part of the Professionalism Super Lawyer Series. The mock interviews will explore options of what to do and what not to do in the interview process. Students will also feature role play interview sessions.

PROFESSIONALISM SUPER LAWYER SERIES: Career PlanningDate: March 22, 2012Time: 5:00 pm-6:00 pmLocation: TBAAttendance: approximately 100 students

Description: The career planning is the fourth part of the Professionalism Super Lawyer Series. This program explains career planning for law students, and brings together interviewing, professionalism and professional dress for jobs and internships. This program concludes the professionalism Super Lawyer Series. This program will raise the confidence of students and make them a competitor in any job search environment. Description: The Mock Midterms is a signature program that prepares students for final exams.

The mock midterm prepares students to excel on their first set of law school exams. It supports BLSA’s dedication to academic excellence.

Description: This scholarship is in honor of the late Rodney Pulliam, who served as the 1998-1999 NBLSA National Chair. To be eligible for this award, entrants must be a 3rd year or 4th year law student graduating in spring 2012. This Scholarship will support law students financially with their tuition and fees.

SANDY BROWN 1L, 2L SCHOLARSHIP.Date: October 2011Time: TBALocation: NCCU School of LawAttendance: Applicants

Description: The scholarship is named after the late Sandy Brown, a past NBLSA western regional director and will be given in her honor. To be eligible for this award, entrants must currently be in their first or second year of law school. This Scholarship will support law students financially with their with their tuition and fees.

Description: The purpose of this award is to recognize the NBLSA member who has excelled academically, in addition to being active in their BLSA chapter and community. Description: The purpose of this award is to recognize a 2L or 3L student for their dedication to BLSA over the years. The recipient mush have helped BLSA in significant ways (attended programs, helped plan programs, promote academic success, etc.) in addition to being active in their BLSA chapter and community. To be eligible for this award, entrants must be a 2nd or 3rd year law students. This Scholarship will support law students financially with bar preparation costs.

Description: The purpose of this award is to recognize a 2L or 3L student for their dedication to BLSA over the years. The recipient must have helped BLSA in significant ways (attended programs, helped plan programs, promote academic success, etc.). They must also be active in their community. To be eligible for this award, entrants must be a 2nd or 3rd year law student. This Scholarship will support law students financially with bar preparation costs.

Description: The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding first year student for their dedication to BLSA and academic success. The recipient must have been a participant in most of BLSA’s yearly events. The recipient can apply the scholarship to any bar review course of their choice. To be eligible for this scholarship award applicants must be a first year law student. This Scholarship will support law students financially with bar preparation costs.

3L BLSA SUMMER BAR STUDY PACKAGE: Two Packages

Description: The purpose of this award is to recognize a NCCU BLSA member who has dedicated their time and service to BLSA during their law school career. The BLSA Summer bar Study package will include: gas cards, gift cards, study materials and other gifts that will help relieve the financial and physical stress of bar study preparation during the summer (highlighters, pens, energy drinks, staples card and gift cards for food).

ESSAY CONTEST FINANCIAL SCHOLARSHIP:Date: March 2011Time: TBALocation: NCCU School of LawAttendance: Applicants

Description: The purpose of this award is to recognize a NCCU BLSA member who has dedicated their time and service to NCCU School of Law during their law school career. The recipient will exhibit excellent writing and persuasive skills through an essay competition. This scholarship will support law students financially with bar preparation costs. The topic is inline with the International Relations and Political and Social Action essay contest. Students will assess the disparities in Europe and offer resolutions.

POLITICAL & SOCIAL ACTION

CONSTITUTION DAYDate: September 17, 2012Time: TBALocation: Great HallAttendance: approximately 65

Description: The constitution day program is a university-wide event to remember Constitution Day. For the last four years, BLSA has been selected by the University to help organize the university’s constitution day program. This year’s title is, The Aftermath of 9/11 and Its Impact on Civil Liberties. This program benefits students by providing them with networking opportunities through an intellectual discussion with well known professionals.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT CONTEST: Student presentationsDate: November 8, 2011Time: TBALocation:NCCU School of LawAttendance: Approximately 45 students

Description: The Environmental Improvement Contest is an oratorical contest between law school students and undergraduates. It highlights the contribution of students to combat environmental justice issues. Students must present an oral argument about the importance of environmental justice, how they are combating the issue, and present proof of their contributions. It is important to highlight the positive contributions of our students in the community. It encourages them to continue the fight of social justice. Individuals can use websites, create videos, spoken word, write poems, or use pictures to supplement their oral arguments.

JUVENILE JUSTICE REFORMDate: October 28, 2011Time:TBALocation: TBAAttendance: approximately 250

Description: The Juvenile Justice Reform program is a partnership between NCCU BLSA and Action for Children, North Carolina. BLSA has joined Action for Children, North Carolina to raise the juvenile age. This program benefits the school because it shows the school’s dedication to social justice, pro-bono work and community service. Students will learn and understand how to draft and file legislation and network with professionals in the judicial advocacy field.

REGION TO REGION: Legislative Advocacy SpotlightDate: November 2011Time: TBALocation: TBAAttendance: approximately 65

Description: The region to region legislative program is a signature program designed to highlight different legislations across the country. The legislations highlighted are those that have a significant impact in the lives of our citizens and students. We will discuss ways to support or reject these legislations and will also discuss how we can combat the disparities associated with the legislation. This program is important to students because it educates them about issues that may affect them everyday.

FINDING OUR COMMUNITY VOICEDate: April 1, 2012Time: TBALocation:NCCU School of LawAttendance: Approximately 45 students

Description: NCCU BLSA will work with the College Student Division to help community organizations organize around a cause that is important to them. We will go into the community and conduct lobbying workshops with the Student Government Association, political science club and other community organizations. We will identify a focus area; present the lobbying information/legislation 101 packets and help the organization with the drafting and filing of one bill during their state’s spring legislative season. This program is important to students because it educates them on legislative filing procedures.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE NOW: Mini videoDate: February 28, 2011Time:TBALocation: TBAAttendance: approximately 250

Description: The Environmental Justice now mini video will highlight areas that have been devastated by environmental justice. The mini video will be a contest between community organizations guided by our BLSA interns. It is a showcase of innovation, creativity and dedication towards combating environmental justice issues. The group with the best video will be chosen as the NCCU BLSA environmental justice video contributor. They will also be recognized in NCCU School of Law’s weekly, on the NBLSA website, NCCU BLSA’s communication blast and in our biannual magazine. The winners will also receive a prize. This program will educate our students and the community about the importance of environmental justice and propose ways to solve issues that are affecting more than 1.8 million people around the country.

Description: BLSA believes that the right to vote is a fundamental right in our American democracy. This issue affects all of America's citizens geographically. NCCU BLSA will host an oratorical contest between law students and undergraduates to discuss the contents and impact of the Dream Act.

Description: NCCU BLSA will team up with Professor Amana and other nonprofit health groups, to create a video for World Aids Day. The video will expose the treatment and everyday life of someone living with aids. It will raise awareness on the issue of aids. The program will also include free AIDS testing through the health center. This program show’s NCCU Law’s dedication to combating issues plaguing the community. It educates law students through statistical data and visual aid.

Description: This program is a co program between BLSA, North Carolina Stop Human Trafficking and the Women’s Law Caucus. The program will educate students on the disparities of human trafficking and discuss ways to solve the issue. This program show’s the school’s dedication towards combating injustice across the nation. Students will learn more about human trafficking and will spread the word to prevent violence against women.

Description: The International Book drive is a competition to raise books and donations to continue building a library in Rwanda. BLSA will collect books by launching a competition between the three sections, soliciting donations from the library and collecting books from the community. Description: NBLSA will select six financially active members to become a Member of the Month; one Member of the Month from each respective region. The Members of the Month will be selected based on an essay of no more than 500 words that describes how the nominee has contributed to his/her community, contributed to his/her fellow NBLSA members, and implemented this year's National Theme "Building Pipelines for the Future." National Member of the Month Nomination forms must be submitted by October 20, 2011. NCCU BLSA will highlight any member of the month that is selected from NCCU School of law. We will also choose a member of the year from NCCU School of Law. The criteria for BLSA’s member of the year will be publicized soon.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The NCCU BLSA Internship program was designed to offer undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to experience life as a law school student. Students undergo a rigorous selection process. They must receive the support of their academic deans; and recommendations from professors and professionals that can attest to their work ethics. Once admitted, each student is paired with a NCCU BLSA director. Each director concentrates on specific issues or opportunities. Some of those issues are: (1) Academic, Scholarship and Career Opportunities, Political and Social Action, International Relations, Social Programs, Competition Teams, and Community Service. Students will work closely with each director to ensure the success of programming and service learning initiatives. In addition, each student will be paired with a first year law student representative. Each first year representative will organize classroom visits and serve as a guide for interns to meet first year law professors. First year representatives will also organize tutorial sessions with each intern. The interns will also participate in the activities the Director of College Student Division organizes. These activities involve personal statement support, mock trial competitions, and LSAT support. Moreover, each intern will participate in the National Black Pre Law Conference held in Houston, Texas from November 17, 2011, to November 19, 2011. The Conference will expose students to different admission counselors and offer guidance and expertise for their law school application process.

BENEFITSThe benefits of the internship program are as follows:

• At least 15 hours of community service hours each semester, depending on the applicant’s participation in service projects. Hours may exceed the community service hour requirement,

• practicum credit from their degree program department, • access to the National Black Prelaw Conference, (admissions counselors, waived law school application.fees, etc.) and mock trial competition experience,

• free or reduced prices for; LSAT preparation courses, personal statement preparation, application guidanceand preparation, insight and guidance on completing the law school admissions process, LSAC fees andapplication fees, • interns may also be eligible for scholarships for academic performance and dedication to the program and first year law school preparation classes.

Description: Over the past few years BLSA has maintained one of the best trial teams NCCU School of Law has to offer. We remain competitive. In 2011-2012, BLSA will support four NCCU Law students in the mock trial competition. We created a unique design that will enable our participants to compete and win against the best in the region and in the nation. Our Coach is the legendary Judge Fullwood. Our coaching staff includes Kirsten Lee (A.D.A) and Terence Barber (Private Practice). The mock trial team’s intern will provide moral and administrative support. In 2011-2012 we will win the national mock trial championship. Students will strengthen their court room decorum, learn how to work as a team during litigation and learn about trial techniques.

Description: NCCU BLSA Moot Court team is one of the most competitive BLSA teams in the region. This year we hope to compete on the national level. In 2011-2012 BLSA will select one moot court team. BLSA’s 2011-2012 moot court coach is Professor Timothy Peterkin. Professor Peterkin is a legal writing professor and a practicing attorney. His skills and experiences will lead the moot court team to a national victory. The Moot Court team’s intern will provide administrative and moral support. As participants, students will learn valuable skills in oral arguments and effective legal writing techniques.

Description: In 2011-2012 NCCU BLSA will compete in the first NBLSA International Negotiations Competition. NCCU School of Law is one of the few law school’s that offers an exemplary Dispute Resolution Institute. Our Coaches, Professor Kathleen Wallace and Professor Mark Morris has extensive experience with coaching international negotiation teams. They also have experience in international negotiations competitions. Professor Wallace and Professor Morris also direct the School of Law’s Dispute Resolution Institute. Students have an opportunity to show case their skills to employers and apply what they learn in a competitive setting.
