ON-GOING AT CHABAD
Dear Friends,With great pleasure we present Chabad’s calendar and program guide for the year 5776 - 2015/2016. This calendar is dedicated to the Rebbe, whose teachings and example are a never-ending source of life for all mankind. The Rebbe’s passionate and uncompromising love for every Jew is legendary. His insistence that all Jews are equal, regardless of background, affiliation or level of observance - are the beacons of truth that continue to guide and inspire us in Tampa Bay and throughout the world.
As we build on the past, we are proud to share with you our vision for the future of Chabad in Tampa Bay. It is thanks to the blessings of G-d, the vision of the Rebbe, the dedication of staff and volunteers as well as the generosity of our supporters that this renaissance has flourished so dramatically. We thank all of you for your friendship and support, and we look forward to working together to ensure an even brighter future.
Chabad is devoted to strengthening Jewish identity, and so we reach out with a multitude of programs to make Judaism an accessible reality to all Jews. No matter how you see yourself, at Chabad we see you as Jewish. No labels. No differences. At Chabad you are family. We welcome you to participate in celebrating the joys of Judaism.
With best wishes for a happy, healthy and sweet New Year.
Sincerely,

Rosh Hashanah in Hebrew literally means, “Head of the Year,” and as its name indicates, it is the beginning of the Jewish year. The anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, it is the birthday of mankind, highlighting the special relationship between G-d and humanity.
The primary theme of the day is our acceptance of G-d as our King. The Kabbalah teaches that the renewal of G-d’s desire for the world, and thus the continued existence of the universe, is dependent upon this. We accept G-d as our King, and G-d is aroused, once again, with the desire to continue creating the world for one more year.
The central observance of Rosh Hashanah is the sounding
of the shofar, the ram’s horn. The shofar is sounded on both days of Rosh Hashanah. The sounding of the shofar represents, among other things, the trumpet blast of a people’s coronation of their king. The cry of the shofar is also a call to repentance; for Rosh Hashanah is also the anniversary of man’s first sin and his repentance thereof, and serves as the first of the “Ten Days of Repentance” which will culminate in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

On Simchat Torah the last portion of the Torah is read, and since we never finish the Torah reading, we begin the reading from the very beginning again to show the Torah is beloved to us. This is a very happy occasion. All the Torah scrolls are taken from the Ark and carried in a parade around the synagogue seven times. We rejoice, sing and dance with the Torahs.
The joyful dancing takes place the preceding evening as well as during the morning services.

Spotlight Community MemberMARC OSTROFFTell us a little about yourself?I grew up in Boca Raton, and moved to Tampa 15 years ago to attend college at the University of South
Florida. After graduating in 2004 I stayed in Tampa where I met my wife, and we have 2 beautiful children. I own and operate a Property & Casualty Insurance Agency in South Tampa, and I am a passionate supporter of USF athletics.
How were you first introduced to Chabad?I heard about Rabbi Mendy from a family member and agreed to take his call. Call led to coffee, coffee led to lunch, which led to Shabbat diner, Passover Seder, and the rest is history.
What do you like most about Chabad?I believe that people should be educated not coerced. Chabad views people as individuals, so they share the beauty of Jewish tradition but they never force or guilt people into doing anything they aren’t comfortable doing.
What’s your favorite item from Dina’s Kitchen?Kasha (buckwheat) Varnishkes (bow-tie pasta), Sweet Nudel Kugel.
Tell us about your most meaningful experience with Rabbi Mendy & Dina? The most meaningful thing for me is the ability to have a true friendship with Rabbi Mendy. I feel comfortable to pick up the phone and talk to him about anything. Having that level of comfort with a Rabbi definitely has strengthened my Jewish identity.
Shabbat 101Join together with over 101 PEOPLE for a unique Shabbat experience with Chabad at Wiregrass.

Spotlight on ROB & HANNAH LAMPORT
Tell us a little about your background…. ROB ~ I was born in NY and Hannah was born in Israel. While I was in Israel in Medical school I met Hannah while she was doing her military service. We married and moved to New York City where I completed my residency. We then moved to Maryland where Gabrielle was born. Later we moved to Florida where Hannah obtained her MBA, and where both our daughters Tori and Julianna were born.
Gabrielle is currently attending college in Washington, DC, Tori is a junior in high school, and Julianna is entering the second grade.
What was your first experience with Chabad? ROB ~ My first experience was when I was a medical student visiting the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Chabad helped myself and the other students find families in the Jewish quarter to host us for Rosh Hashanah. The rest of the family had their first experience with Chabad at Wiregrass, a few years after we moved to Tampa.
What do you like the most about Chabad? ROB & HANNAH ~ We love the way Rabbi and Chanie teach Judaism and the way they
make everyone feel part of their family. The services at Chabad are always warm and inviting, and we especially enjoy the kiddush meal and conversation following services.
What’s your favorite Chabad event? Why? HANNAH ~ It is very difficult to choose just one since we really enjoy all the holiday events. If I had to choose one I would pick Purim because it is always so different and exciting for both the adults and the kids.
What’s your favorite Jewish food? HANNAH ~ We love “traditional” Jewish (& Israeli) food. Rob loves corned beef on rye with mustard and I love brisket and stuffed onions. Gabrielle favorite must be fallafel, Tori loves (Rabbi’s) chulent, and Julianna loves gefilte fish. So basically, we love food!
Can you share with us an important Jewish story/moment in your life? ROB & HANNAH ~ One of the most important moments in our lives were the Hebrew baby naming of our daughters. There are no words to describe the feeling it was just such a special and touching moment.

PESACHThe eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring and it commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. And, by following the rituals of Passover, we have the ability to relive and experience the true freedom that our ancestors gained. The holiday is rich with traditions meant to help us achieve “freedom” in our own lives.
MATZAHInstead of chametz, we eat matzah— flat unleavened bread. It is a mitzvah to partake of matzah on the two Seder nights (see below for more on this), and during the rest of the holiday it is optional.
