Dear Colleagues:

It is my pleasure to present this listing of scholarly achievements by thefaculty of the University of Illinois Springfield. As you review the entirecompilation, you will see that it represents academic publications andpresentations delivered in state, regional, national, and international venuesduring the 2015 calendar year, and it is an impressive array. The annuallisting is a tangible reflection of our continual abiding commitment to theteacher-scholar model, in which scholarship and teaching are realized asmutually enlivening and enriching activities.

As you know, we traditionally limit entries in the annual listing to peer-reviewed publications and presentations, which are the time-honored,public forms of faculty scholarship. Nevertheless, we also know that facultymembers engage in many other scholarly activities that contribute to thegeneration and dissemination of new knowledge and to the development oftheir academic disciplines and professional fields. The value of theseactivities, including but not limited to manuscript review and selection, external grants and reports, serving on editorial boards, and organizingconference panels, should never be underestimated. Such engagement isalso a well-recognized mark of the teacher-scholar.

The teacher-scholar model is, indeed, alive here at UIS, and in the spirit ofcelebrating excellence in scholarship, I extend sincere congratulations on allof your scholarly accomplishments in 2015, and best wishes for yourcontinuing success.

Jim ErmatingerInterim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost

Peter ShapinskyAssociate Professor, History

Dr. Peter Shapinsky, Associate Professor of History, exemplifies the teacher-scholar model at UIS. He is regarded as one of the foremost authorities inthe fields of Medieval Japan and East Asian maritime history. A versatile, interdisciplinary scholar, and fluent in Japanese, Dr. Shapinsky is an experton piracy in medieval Japan.

Professor Shapinsky is actively engaged in continuing scholarship toexpand the breadth and depth of his work. Nominator and reviewers alikepoint to his monograph, Lords of the Sea: Pirates, Violence, and Commercein Late Medieval Japan as a significant work. This work has generated anew conceptualization of pirates as Sea Lords in medieval Japanese history, drawing parallels between the ruling of land and of sea. Professor Shapin-sky has shown them to be equivalent to the Feudal Lords on land, inas-much as the Sea Lords also managed economic development and trade.Such reconceptualization of an area of study is one of the most fruitful ofscholarly achievements, allowing future researchers to see a topic through anew lens or in a new frame or context. Other publications include severalpeer-reviewed book chapters, journal articles, and English translation ofJapanese scholarship. Dr. Shapinsky has also delivered papers at national
