However, he then was faced with a severe brain tumor. Completing school around brain surgery, chemo treatment, and radiation therapy, Chun's story is one of grit and determination. latest NEWSPlanning for Success, College and Career Readiness Event

One of the snowiest days in February welcomed Denver Online's largest event of the year:Planning for Success, College and Career Readiness Event. The day kicked off with keynotespeaker Teju Ravilochan. If you missed it, you can watch his inspiring message here. The daythen flowed into three rounds of break out workshops, with 25 workshops to choose from,representing topics anywhere from finding the right fit college, to becoming an entrepreneur,to finding the next internship or volunteer opportunity. The day then concluded with acollege fair and awarding two students with $500 scholarships. The essay winner wasSammie Little, while the other student was Marisa Gasca.

Denver Online High School's Performance Club rocked the stage on February 8th during theirshowcase of the play Crazy Town! Students put in tremendous effort to pull off this greatshow, filling the auditorium full of friends and family coming to watch the magic happen. Ifyou missed it, you can find the recorded version here.

Second Semester New Student OrientationDenver Online welcomed over 55 new students for enrollment in second semester. Newstudents participated in New Student Orientation on January 17th-19th, meeting theirteachers and peers, learning how to navigate Schoology, and learning about extraopportunities available to them.

For January's field trip, we headed to the National Western Stock Show onJanuary 18th where attendees enjoyed the rodeo , watching the cattle dogs in anobstacle course, and seeing the animals be shown and prepped for the showring. Speak Spanish to Me: An Open Conversation on How Denver Online CanBetter Engage Spanish Speaking FamiliesIn an attempt to help better serve our Spanish speaking population at Denver Online, theschool hosted a Parent Engagement Night on January 25th. Parents were able to providefeedback as well as engage with DOHS faculty to learn about how to better engage in theirstudents' education.

Gifted and Talented Family NightDenver Public Schools hosted their Gifted and Talented (GT) Family Night at Denver OnlineHigh School on January 25th. The night featured DPS' Mental Health Team and the Children'sHospital Youth Advisory Board, leading families through opportunities and techniques tobetter serve the knowledge and spirit of our GT students.

Denver Online High School artists were featured in the Digital Arts Showcase at the Denver

Art Society on February 12th. Student art was displayed while attendees were able to checkout the gallery viewing. You can see all of the student artwork here.

DOHS Faculty Present at Conference on Blended and Online LearningDenver Online faculty were asked to present at the annual Conference on Blended and OnlineLearning that occurred on February 22nd and 23rd. English Teachers, Jessica Glynn andJennifer White, presented a workshop entitled "Literacy in the Online Classroom" onstrategies for adapting the best of brick and mortar curriculum to the online environment,including how to host meaningful asynchronous close reads and discussions. Principal IanJones also was selected to speak on the Principal Panel for the event.

FREE March Field Trip to the GrowHaus

What: For our free March field trip, we are going to go check out the GrowHaus! TheGrowHaus is a nonprofit farm that focuses on food production, food distribution atlow cost to community members, and food education. We will be having a studentcook-off where students will be able to gather vegetables from their garden and thenlearn how to create a yummy salsa! Students will also get to do some hands-on workin the garden and also learn about other service/work opportunities available.Who: All DOHS students welcome to come!When: Wednesday, March 14th. Students should meet at Smedley at 9am to get onthe bus to go to the GrowHaus. We will be back at Smedley by 1pm.Where: Meet at Smedley to get on the bus. 4th Quarter New Student Orientation

What: Student Orientation prepares students to be successful by introducing them tothe online programs, their teachers and peers, ways to get involved in the school, andextra credit earning opportunities.Who: This is a mandatory three-day orientation for all incoming students so pleaseensure that you mark your calendars for this event. Parents may attend thisorientation but are not required to be there. 9th Grade Expo at Auraria Campus

What: We are heading to Auraria Campus to check out the campus, learn from collegestudents about their experience, get a glimpse into the different programs offered, andlearn about scholarships and aid to making college at CU Denver, CCD, and MetroState.Who: This is especially meant for 9th graders, but all students are welcome to attend.When: Tuesday, March 20th. We will mee at Smedley at 8:30am to get on bus and willarrive back at Smedley around 2pm.Where: Meet at Smedley to ride the bus at 8:30am and then we will head together toAuraria Campus.RSVP: RSVP to Casey Burton ([email protected]) by March 16th.

New PARENT Orientation

What: This orientation teaches parents how to navigate the online programs so thatthey can monitor their student's progress, grades, and attendance. It also introducesparents to faculty at Denver Online, to other parents, and to special opportunities forparents and their students (e.g. volunteer opportunities, tuition-free college credit,committees to serve on, etc).Who: We strongly encourage all new parents to attend this event.When: Wednesday,March 21st from 6pm-8pmWhere: Smedley Learning Center (4250 Shoshone Street, Denver, CO 80211)
