The BC Registered Music Teachers, South Fraser Branch welcomes you to Festival 2016. We celebrate the students, teachers and parents who have put extra effort, care and attention to each performance we will hear this week. We are especially pleased to welcome our two adjudicators, Marjory Purdy and Ildiko Skeldon and look forward to the musical expertise they will share.

Festivals promote performance excellence, intellectual challenge and community. We hope you will take time to greet other students and share new ideas

Our adjudicators will write separate comments for each participant and work with individual students at the piano. They will grade each student in the following categories:

All students who receive Gold Standings will be invited to perform at the Celebration Recitals on Saturday, March 5, 2016

PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES AND CONDUCT DURING FESTIVAL AND CELEBRATION RECITALS

• Each performer will provide the adjudicator with an original copy of the music to be performed. Music books may not be shared in the same class.

• The performers name should be on the front of the music and a page marker should be placed on the first page of the piece to be played.

• Late arrivals that are not present when called upon to perform will be called again at the end of the class performances before the oral adjudications begin. If not present at that time the performer will be considered a no-show and will not be permitted to play at a later time

• As a courtesy to performers, we ask that you:

• DO NOT BRING FOOD OR DRINK INTO THE FESTIVAL• DO NOT TALK OR WHISPER DURING PERFORMANCES OR

ADJUDICATIONS• ENTER AND EXIT ONLY BETWEEN PERFORMANCES

• Entrants may not play on the festival piano outside of an actual performance.

• If you have a question regarding the Festival, please speak with your teacher. Do not approach the adjudicators for discussion of Festival matters.

• Students should dress in an appropriate manner. Avoid jeans, shorts, T‐shirts with slogans, sweats, and bare midriffs.

• Recording equipment and photography of any kind is NOT ALLOWED in the festival classes.

Adjudicator’s Biography

MARJORY PURDYMarjory Purdy began piano lessons at the age of four with her mother, Margaret Purdy. She later continued her studies with Helen Dahlstrom, Robin Wood, Winifred Scott Wood, and William Goldenberg. Her education includes Performer’s and Teacher’s Diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music and the Victoria Conservatory of Music; a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Victoria; and a Master of Music Degree and Performer’s Certificate from Northern Illinois University. She also studied collaborative piano at the doctorate level with Martin Katz at the University of Michigan and participated in summer programs and masterclasses in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Currently, Marjory teaches in Coquitlam at her home studio and at Place des Arts. She loves working with all levels from the very young beginner to the advanced piano student. She also specializes in pedagogy for new and established teachers, and at Place des Arts, she mentors and supervises several student teachers. Marjory adjudicates music festivals throughout British Columbia, and she is an examiner for Conservatory Canada. As a clinician, she presents masterclasses and workshops to teachers and students on various topic. Most recently, she presented a session at the National Convention of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Association.

Marjory considers the benefits of music education immeasurable for a child’s emotional, social, and intellectual development. In her teaching, she encourages and challenges students to strive towards excellence within a kind and supportive environment. She believes all children have an artist within, and she aspires to guide students on their journey of learning and discovery.

Adjudicator’s Biography

ILDIKO SKELDONThe Vice Principal of VISM, Ms. Skeldon is a Senior Examiner with RCM Examinations for over 20 years – examining and giving workshops throughout Canada and USA. A member of the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators Association she has adjudicated extensively in Western Canada. A Past President of the Richmond Branch BC Registered Music Teachers Association and she has held numerous Provincial Positions. Studied

Piano Performance at University of BC and the Liszt Academy of Music in Hungary. Her teaching methods include Traditional and European approaches. Ms. Skeldon has recently been appointed an International Judge for The World Piano Teachers Association

Piano Competition.
