This year I received the Australia Day Award for Kyogle‘s Sports Person of the Year. What are you currently focussing on at the moment? I am playing for the Greater Northern Side at State trials in Toronto, Newcastle. What is involved in training? How many days do you train? I train 5 days a week which doesn‘t include playing. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT The TAS block is growing and we are beginning to see the size and shape of the new block. However, it does come at a cost. The cost is our patience. The disruption to classes has been minimised through the hard work of the TAS staff. The bus bay is still causing concern. All our bus companies have been fantastic in ensuring that safety of students remains their key focus. The bus bay area at 3.30pm each afternoon is a challenge. Our bus drivers take care to move slowly down the road to the pickup point. The students are being monitored by two staff members who are on duty each day. Last week, a parent drove through the area with limited regard for the safety of students, bus drivers or staff. Their details have been given to police. We ask for your consideration of our students and community while travelling, if the need arises, through this area between 3.30-4.00pm each week day afternoon. We do not want any tragedies to occur. Congratulations to Year 12 and Ms Riesinger and Mr Stewart for the interviews and handing out of reports last week. Congratulations to Mr Landers and all the staff and students who participated in the Naplan tests. Year 11 reports are currently underway while junior exams begin this week and continue into next week. Don‘t forget we have a number of Year Excursions coming up. Year 7 are invited to attend Coffs Harbour at an estimated cost of $200.00. This will be on the 6, 7, 8 June. Year 10 End of Year Excursion to Sydney has an estimated cost of $560.00 and will be in Week 7, Term 4. The Year 11 Snow Excursion will be in Week 5, Term 3 at a cost of $885.00 plus $45.00 for snowboarding. All students interested in placing an expression of interest in an excursion are reminded that this is subject to a review of their compliance with Kyogle High School Student Welfare and Discipline Policy and their completion of all course requirements. On Thursday next week, we have the Athletics Carnival. This is a school day and it expected that all students will attend. Students who do not have a valid reason for being absent, will not be able to attend the School Social on June 14 2012. Have a great week. Mrs Janeen Silcock Principal

From the Deputy’s Desk 26 May is National Sorry Day. The first National Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998, one year after the tabling in Federal Parliament of the report Bringing Them Home: the Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children From Their Families. The report highlights the stolen generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were removed from their families and brought up by non-Indigenous foster parents, government and other charitable organisations of the day. These children suffered from loss of family, culture and language. This day is also known as ‗Journey of Healing Day‘. As part of National Sorry Day, Kyogle High School in association with Southern Cross University Gnibi Indigenous Education Centre and the Equity and Diversity Unit are excited to offer students and parents the opportunity to attend a function at the University. This Day will be attended by high profile Indigenous speakers, performers and musicians, and will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to participate in understanding what Sorry Day is all about. Southern Cross University is providing a bus and lunch for all students, teachers and parents attending on this day. The bus will leave Kyogle High School at 9am after a roll is marked and return to the school by 3pm. Staff from KHS will supervise the students. Students are required to wear full school uniform as this is a school function. Mrs Gae Masters Deputy Principal

An informative and entertaining P&C Meeting was held on Wednesday 16th May. We were treated to a few students modelling the proposed new uniform for us. This was arranged by the Uniform Committee to gain input into decisions from the wider school community. The process was fun with everyone‘s view highly valued, as we all want a uniform that the kids and parents are happy with. The schools Federation representative, Lindy Ruangsri, explained the reasons behind the teacher‘s stop work meeting. In summary, the Federation are fighting to retain children‘s learning conditions and teachers working conditions, and the P&C strongly urge all parents to support the teachers in their actions. During open forum, parents reported positive feedback about the Cross country being held at Ballina and the trip to Shakespeare‘s Romeo and Juliet in Brisbane. If you wish to be part of decision-making at your school please come along to the next P&C meeting, which will be held the same night as the social, Thursday 14th June. Jojon Jarjum Jojon Jarjum is an accredited training program developed by Gugin Guddaba , Kyogle Council and North Coast ACE in response to the employment needs of young Aboriginal women in the Kyogle area. Three Kyogle High School students have been attending the training and will graduate in a few weeks with 7 units of competency from the Certificate III in Childcare and Hospitality. This is a really exciting outcome. The girls have loved the ‗hands on‘ teaching techniques and even reported that OH&S was a great subject as they applied OH&S principles to making playdough! Congratulations to the students and we look forward to their graduation.
