This publication, Profiles in Excellence, provides the communitywith an overview of the many programs and successes that our students have experienced during the 2008-09 school year. As you enjoy this year-end report, I am certain that you will agreethat our students were actively engaged in a wide variety of learningopportunities.

Annually, we develop a district theme to focus our energies andefforts on behalf of students and staff. This past year we utilized thenew school district vision statement, “Educating for Success,Inspiring Excellence.” This statement was created by our StrategicPlanning Steering Committee. Professional and support staffresponded to the message with a renewed emphasis on the importance of working together to meet student needs with our goalto attain excellence in all that we do. In Parkland, we believe in continuous improvement, always looking to progress in every aspectof our programs and services for students and staff. Honoring student and staff achievement is critical to maintaining a positive culture and climate in the Parkland School District. We celebrate

these accomplishments and thank all involved for making the extra effort to achieve at the highestlevel.

Each year we analyze numerous sources of data, including test scores on state and national tests,to determine student needs and improve achievement by working to better meet these needs. Our students and staff have responded with a cooperative effort that continues to achieve excellent results.In particular, we work diligently to assist and support our special needs students to reach proficiencyon state assessments. This is an ongoing challenge for students and staff that we embrace withdetermination.

The mission of the Parkland School District is to assist young people to grow and develop into productive citizens. As a result of the dedication of students, staff, parents and the entire community,the school district continues its rich tradition of noteworthy accomplishments. This past school yearwe once again celebrated achievement that garnered numerous state and national awards in all academic areas as well as in the arts and athletics. Guided by the efforts of a talented and caringstaff of educators, Parkland students continue to distinguish themselves. This annual publicationserves to illustrate many examples of these efforts.

We are very proud of all of our students and staff. It is through their positive interaction that theschool district is able to achieve these desirable outcomes. However, as with every successful community-sponsored enterprise, another ingredient essential to bringing all of this achievement tofruition is a supportive community!

Parkland School District is blessed with a positive, pro-active, supportive community. We know thatpublic schools tend to reflect the community in which they are located. The ongoing support of theParkland community has allowed our schools to be strong and effective. With your continued assistance, we will work harder to continue to grow and improve.

Dear Stakeholders in the Parkland School District,

On behalf of the Board of Directors,as President, it is my pleasure towrite to you prefacing our Profiles in Excellence for the 2008-2009school year.

As you examine this publication, I believe you will agree with us thatour educational theme for the 2008-09 school year, “Educating forSuccess, Inspiring Excellence,” isabundantly evident within these pages.

Starting with the merit profiles and continuing through elementary, middle, high school, and the LehighCareer & Technical Institute; depicting excellence inscholarship, the arts, sports, community involvement;and showing the hard work by the students, faculty,administration, support personnel, and, most importantly, the parents; we find much to celebrate and be proud of as a Parkland partnership and family.

We, the board, could not be more amazed and gratified by the commitment of our Parkland team tochallenge our students to be the best of the best. We certainly are proud of all of our students who striveto be the best they can be, and those who contributedto their successes.

I continue to believe that there is a masterpiece lockedwithin each and every child. By combining the effortsof the entire Parkland community, and by “Educatingfor Success, Inspiring Excellence,” those masterpieceswill continue to be unlocked every day.

2009 CO-VALEDICTORIANSChristopher Busack was a memberof the National Honor Society, theNational Math Honor Society and theSpanish Honor Society. He playedfootball for two years and volleyball forfour years and was selected as captainof the varsity boys’ volleyball team.Chris was a member of the P.A.L.S.club for four years and served as Vice-President his senior year. He is afour-year member of Explorer Post. Chris earned theNational Honor Society Award of Scholastic Achievement in Mathematics. He attained a 4.9167 grade point averageand scored 2140 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test includinga perfect score of 800 on the Math SAT and the SAT 2 subject test in Math. Chris plans to attend Duke Universityin the fall and double major in Chemistry and Math. He isthe son of Annette and Frank Busack.

2009 CO-VALEDICTORIANSAaron M. Levick was a member of thesoccer team for four years, and trackfor two years. He was involved withthe Leo Club for four years and amember of the Debate team for twoyears, serving as Co-Captain hissenior year. Aaron was a NationalHonor Society member and a memberof the National Math Honor Societyand the French Honor Society. He is afour-year member of the French Club, his senior yearserving as Vice-President. He also participated in thePennsylvania Math League for four years. Aaron is thefounder and President of the Exploring Careers inEngineering Club. Aaron is a National Merit Finalist andscholarship recipient and received the AmericanAssociation of Physics Teachers Outstanding StudentAward. He attained a 4.9167 grade point average andscored 2270 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test including aperfect score of 800 on the Critical Reading SAT. Aaronplans to attend Cornell University and major in Physics.He is the son of Doctors Mary and Donald Levick.

2009 SALUTATORIANChristopher Whittaker was a four-year member of the track team and participated in cross country fortwo years, being named the Lehigh Valley Scholar Athlete in Cross Country his senior year. He was amember of the National Honor Society and the National Math Honors Society. Chris participated in thePennsylvania Math League. Chris is a talented musician, participating in the Jazz Band and the ConcertBand for four years. He served on the Student Senate as well. Chris was the President of the Class of2009 for four years. He achieved the Eagle Scout Award and remains active in the Scouts. Chris is adedicated volunteer with his church as well as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Chris was the recipient of this year’s Donley Award for Excellence as well as the Cohen-Feeley ‘Best of the Best’Scholarship. He received the Community Service Award from the Exchange Club of Western Lehighand is a National Merit Commended student. He attained a 4.902 grade point average and scored 2210

on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Chris plans to attend Duke University and major in Economics and International Relations.He is the son of Deborah and Harold Whittaker.

Eleven Parkland seniors were among a group of 16,000National Merit Finalists in the 54th Annual National MeritScholarship program. The finalists make up about .5% ofeach state’s graduating class.

Kerry Cao was a member of Parkland High School’sDebate Team, Odyssey of the Mind Club (this club came in7th in the World Finals last year), Math League, ScienceOlympiad, National Honor Society, Scholastic Scrimmage,Political Science Club, French Club, French Honor Society,and the Boys’ tennis team. He has held leadership positionsin many of the clubs he is involved in. He also was a 5-timeNational Winner in the Guild Auditions for piano.

Steven Dunmire was the President of thePerforming Arts Club, and a member of the InternationalThespian Society, the Chorale, National Honor Society, andSpanish Honor Society. He participated in the school playsand was the Children’s Show Co-Director for the 2008-09school year. He was also the Teen Co-Chair of the UnitedWay’s TeenWorks Board as well as a teacher of religiousschool.

Aaron Levick (2009 Co-Valedictorian) was amember of the soccer team for four years, and track team fortwo years. He was involved with the Leo Club for four yearsand a member of the Debate team for two years, serving asCo-Captain his senior year. Aaron was a National HonorSociety member and a member of the National Math HonorSociety and the French Honor Society. He is a four-yearmember of the French Club, his senior year serving asVice-President. He also participated in the PennsylvaniaMath League for four years. Aaron is the founder andPresident of the Exploring Careers in Engineering Club.Aaron is a National Merit Finalist and scholarship recipientand received the American Association of Physics TeachersOutstanding Student Award. Christine Mays was the drum major of the marchingband for two years and the President of the band for oneyear. She was also Co-leader of the Flute Choir and a Co-leader of the Truth Bible Study as well as a member ofthe Elementary World Language Enrichment program, MathLeague, National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, andSpanish Honor Society. In her spare time, Christy helpedher community by participating in a leadership team at herchurch youth group as a member of the church orchestraand going on mission trips.

Raaj Parekh was the Regional President andChapter President of Future Business Leaders of America,Co-captain of the Debate Team, Co-editor-in-chief of theschool newspaper, and was a member of the PoliticalScience Club, National Honor Society and AmnestyInternational. He hopes to study Economics andInternational Relations at Brown University.

Steven Rosen was the Student Representative tothe School Board, Scholastic Scrimmage Captain, Club MedPresident, Debate Team Co-captain, Math League VicePresident, JSA President, National Honor Society Treasurer,Future Business Leaders of America Treasurer, and PoliticalScience Club Treasurer. He was also a member of the Boys’Varsity Tennis team and Student Senate and won numerousawards in the National History Day competition. He co-founded Tennis Friends, an organization for teens with special needs.

Delaney Snyder was a Co-captain of the ClubSoccer Team and a member of the Leo Club, Spanish HonorSociety. She played JV soccer and ran track where shemedaled in Districts. She also volunteered at the ParklandLibrary during high school.

Bianca Tang was an editor of the school’s newspaper, French Club President, French Honor SocietyTreasurer, and a member of the Elementary World LanguageEnrichment program, Student Senate, Math Honor Society,National Honor Society, Key Club, and Varsity Dance Team.She also served as the Student Senate Arts Representative.Bianca won Pennsylvania Scholastic Press Associationawards for newspaper articles and an award for her performance on the Le Grand Concours, a national Frenchcontest. In her spare time, she volunteered at Lehigh ValleyHospital in Pediatrics and has been dancing and playing thepiano for 12 years.

David Tench was 1st chair tenor saxophonist in theJazz Ensemble and ran hurdles in Varsity Track. He wasalso a member of the French Honor Society and the NationalHonor Society.

Joyce Wang was the President of the Art Club,Historian of the French Honor Society, and PR Chair of theRed Cross Club as well as a member of the ElementaryWorld Language Enrichment program and PHS Bible Study.She is also a worship leader at the Lehigh Valley ChineseChristian Church.

Yunfan Zhang speaks Chinese and Spanish andvolunteers her time in a nursing home and hospital pharmacy. She enjoys reading and origami and hopes tostudy Biology.

MATH WIZARDSZhenghao “Tony”Shen was the onlystudent to qualify forthe United States ofAmerica MathOlympiad atParkland HighSchool. He received a perfect score on thePennsylvania Math Exam and was one of only 5students in Pennsylvania to achieve this honor.He also placed first at the Bucknell University MathCompetition out of 147 participating high school students. The Parkland High School Team of TonyShen, Steven Rosen, and Kerry Cao received anHonorable Mention Plaque placing 4th out of 28 schoolsat Bucknell and took 9th place in the FBLA’s NationalLeadership Conference competition in Business Math inAnaheim, CA over the summer. The team as a wholeplaced 1st in Lehigh County and 5th in the state. TonyShen is pictured above with teachers Ms. Stinner, Ms.Sproul, and Principal Sniscak.

TRIG STAR CHAMPNicholas Dyszel was awarded $200 for winningthe PHS Trig StarCompetition and $1000 anda plaque for winning thestate competition. The TrigStar Competition is

sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Chapter ofPennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors (PSLS).Parkland has had two state 1st place winners in fiveyears of participating in the Trig Star competition andboth have been sophomores and students in Mr. Haaf’smath classes. ENGINEERING AWARD

At the 2nd AnnualPennsylvania ProjectLead the WayEngineering/DesignChallenge, fourteenPennsylvania high school teams from across the statecompeted to design a solar-powered vehicle within aspecific amount of time and given identical bags ofmaterials. Not only did the teams have to design thevehicle, but they all had to make timed team

presentations detailing how they arrived at theirdesign. The results were judged by a group of engineers from Carpenter Technology, a leading manufacturer and distributor of specialty alloys locatedin Reading, PA. Project Lead The Way is a nationalnon-profit organization that works in partnership withpublic middle and high schools to implement a curriculum that emphasizes hands-on experiences inengineering, design, and technology. which was designed to give students an opportunity to apply the skills required in school to a real-life,real-world project. The students were asked to createan elementary school in an urban setting with limitedexisting space. The first place team is pictured aboveand includes (from left to right): Emily Stein, TanyaHaldeman, Michael Andrew, and Jared Bilsak. Thesecond place team included: Darpan Patel, GeorgeHayward, Nick Dyszel, and Fatema Kanji.

ENGINEERING PROCESS AWARDThe PHS Engineering Clubparticipated in the 2009SeaPerch Competition atDrexel University and won2nd Place for theirEngineering Notebook (the Team that best demonstrates the engineering process) and 3rd placefor their Oral Presentation (for their creative presentation that best reflects a marketable companyproduct). STOCK MARKET WINParkland High School students took part in anonline Stock Market Gamerun by the National Councilfor Economic Education(NCEE) as part of Investingclass. The game is a 10-week simulation during

which students invest an imaginary $100,000 by buyingstocks listed on the major securities exchanges. Team rankings are based on the final portfolio values.Students competed against 59 other teams in theScranton/Lehigh region. Finishing in 1st place for thefall, with a final portfolio of $112,392 are, (left to right),Mike Williamson vice president, Prudential Financial,Michael Ashcraft and Christopher Brill. Absent from thephoto is Karen N. Ceh (advisor). The Parkland team ofChris Krajcir and Justin Lewis placed 3rd.

SCIENCE FAIR WINNERSPJASParkland High School participated in the 75th annualPennsylvania Junior Academy of Science StateCompetition. Seventeen students scored a 1st placewith a score of 4.0 or higher. Sara Kaskowitz, 12thgrade, scored a perfect 5.0 and was also awarded witha plaque for 6 years of participation at PJAS. COCA-COLA SCHOLARSKelsey Bonsell and Steven Rosen were selected as oneof 250 Finalists in the 2008-09 Coca-Cola ScholarsProgram which distinguishes them as an outstandingleader in their school and community. There were nearly75,000 applicants and more than 2,100 Semifinalistswho applied to be a part of this program which awards50 $20,000 scholarships and 200 $10,000 scholarshipsto the Finalists who traveled to Atlanta, Georgia (Coca-Cola headquarters) April 2-5, 2009 for a ScholarsWeekend. Kelsey and Steven enjoyed an all expensepaid trip that included interviews that determined theirfinal scholarship award as well as a banquet that honored their achievements and a weekend filled withseminars, tours of local landmarks, social gatherings anda community service project.

ODYSSEY OF THE MINDParkland High School’sOdyssey of the Mindteam placed 2nd in theirdivision at the statecompetition and thenwent on to place 7th atthe World Finals held atIowa State University.They are coached byJudy Migliore-Erdman.Maureen Kautzmann and Laura Kowalski serve asmoderators for the team. TRUMPET AWARDS

The Parkland High School student newspaper, The Trumpet,received a Gold Award (the highest honor) by the prestigiousColumbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) at ColumbiaUniversity with a score of 971 out of 1000. The paper was alsoawarded a Silver rating in the 2008 Pennsylvania School PressAssociation Newspaper Evaluation contest. Additionally,professional journalists from across the state judged almost 600student entries in writing, illustration and design. Alex Gardner won 1st place in the Spot News Category in the2009 Scholastic Keystone Press Awards Contest sponsored bythe Pennsylvania Newspaper Association. The Trumpet alsoreceived a first place award in the American ScholasticPress Association’s annual review and contest for scholastic newspapers. Andy Wagaman andKyle Desandes-Moyerreceived the BestOverall SportsCoverage in the contest. This year’seditors were RaajParekh and Alex Stein.

MORNING NEWS

The Parkland Morning News Team at Parkland High School onceagain received the Shortie Award at the Student Film and NewsFestival for having the best high school news program at the 8thAnnual Festival on June 6th in Washington, D.C. This year’s

VFW VOICE OF DEMOCRACY ESSAY CONTEST

SIGN LANGUAGE

Mariah Alston signed the National Anthem at the HarlemGlobetrotters game at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, PA. Also,Lauren Ritter volunteered to interpret for a deaf student taking aModern Design class at The Baum School of Art this year.

ART AWARDS

Catherine Kemmerer won a 2009 National ScholasticArt Award for her meticulously detailed painting that isshown in the picture above. Nearly 80,000 studentssubmitted more than 140,000 works of art and writingto 81 regional programs. The top regional artworks,approximately 8,000, received Gold Keys and wereautomatically entered into national judging. Only 500individual works of art received national awards andwere honored at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall, NewYork City. Catherine’s painting then went on to be soldto Lehigh Valley Hospital and will be housed in their artgallery. It is the first student work of art that the galleryhas purchased.

Thuy Tran won a 15th Congressional District Art Competition Second Place Award from the Baum School for her still life collage, “Still Life.” She won 2 certificates,$25, and a one-term scholarship to the

Baum School of Art.

Parkland High School student Matt Foxcompeted at the Pennsylvania StateComputer Fair at Dickinson College.He won 3rd place in the state for his“Shards of Light” digital graphic design.

GARTER BOWLGarter Bowl is a girls’ powder puff flag football eventduring Homecoming week where the freshmen girlsplay the junior girls at 6 PM, the sophomores face theseniors at 7 PM, and then the winners of the 2 previousgames face off in a championship game at 8 PM. Thisevent serves as a huge spirit event that has brought inthousands of students and members of the communityand is also a charity event. The annual goal this yearwas to increase the students’ as well as the community’s awareness on local environmental issues.The Student Council contributed their proceeds to TheLehigh Valley Zoo to continue to preserve the gamelands and continue to educate our community on thelocal and imported animals under their care.

GEO CLUB ELECTRONICS RECYCLING EVENTCommunity members dropped off their unwantedelectronics, batteries, cell phones, radios, computers,printers etc. for recycling at this annual event. Mostitems cost $1 to recycle, but TV’s were a flat rate of$18 regardless of size, bulbs were 25 cents per pieceand batteries were 75 cents per pound. They collectedmore than 15,000 pounds of recyclables.

Nicholas Tacca was nominated by the Eastern PAYouth Soccer Association to receive the 2009 UnionLeague Good Citizenship Award in recognition of hisendeavor to follow and uphold the principles of acommitted citizen. As a result, he was invited to attendYouth Work Day at the Union League in Philadelphia where he participated in a full day of workshops on therights and responsibilities of good citizenship and anevening banquet.

The Red Cross Club held a Heroes Campaign to raisemoney for local disasters. The club was asked to raise$500, but they exceeded that with a totalof $701 whichwas made up bystaff donationsalone.

Parkland High School’s Music Production classreleased a holiday albumentitled, Parkland: A Seasonfor Giving 2008. Profits fromthis third annual project set arecord. As a result, $1,300 wasraised for their charity, theCHILDREN OF FALLENSOLDIERS RELIEF FUND.

The French Club held a fundraiser at Applebee’srestaurant to benefit children in the french-speakingregion of West Africa, Benin, where French teacherNoel Smith spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar. The students raised over $800 in profits and Applebeestold them that it was the second highest fund raisingbreakfast they had ever had.

Amy L. Moyer, a PHS Family andConsumer Science Teacher and asecond-year Ed.D. student inLehigh University’s College ofEducation’s InternationalLeadership program, was selectedto showcase her research atLehigh University’s ResearchSymposium on April 16th. Her research focused on sustaining pre-service teacher education teacherreform in a Post-Soviet Latvia. Amy traveled to Dhaka,Bangladesh during the summer to study the Bengali language, going to class 6 hours per day for 9 weekson a fully-paid scholarship. The Critical LanguageScholarship (CLS) is sponsored by the United StatesDepartment of State and the Council of AmericanOverseas Research Centers (CAORC). The CLSProgram is part of the National Security LanguageInitiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americansstudying and mastering critical need foreign languages.

Chris Barrett, Parkland HighSchool art teacher, has beenaccepted to the TransartInstitute of Danube University inLinz, Austria to begin his graduate study toward an MFADegree in New Media. It willtake three summers of coursework. This year it took place inBerlin, Germany. This is aninternational program of studywhere he will be working withartists from all over the world. He was one of eighteenwho has been accepted out of 700 applicants.

Jason Henry, Parkland High School Classrooms forthe Future Technology Coach, wasselected as a Keystone TechnologyIntegrator (KTI) as one of 100 teachersacross the state to attend the KeystoneSummit at Bucknell University July 27-31, 2009 because of his work inusing technology in meaningful ways toenhance teaching and learning.

There, he engaged in hands-on experiences thatincreased his ability to lead and support the effectiveuse of technology in the classrooms.

Another school year has passed and with it alsopassed three outstanding athletic seasons. Over the course of the 2008-2009 school year, Parkland athletic teams amassed a winning record in excess of 81 percent. To put that figure in perspective, theNCAA Division One athletic program selected for thisyear’s Director’s Cup, the award annually given tothe best college athletic program in the nation, hadless than a 70 percent winning average.

GIRLS TENNISGirls Tennis won the LVIAC, League and TournamentChampionships. Martha Wood came in third for DistrictSingles. Liana Mandel and Megan Wylie won the goldmedal in the District XI doubles competition.

PARKLAND GOLFCoach Jeff Bartman led his team tothe local golf scene hat trick by winning the LVIAC League andTournament Championship, as wellas the team District XI gold. LVIACAll-Stars were Brandon Davis andJordan Keller. The team went onto win the PIAA EasternChampionship and finished 4th inthe state finals.

BOYS/GIRLS CROSS COUNTRYThe boys’ cross country teamended the regular season as theLVIAC Dual Meet Champions withan undefeated 12-0 record. Thegirls finished fourth in the league meet with a 9-3record. Helen Stanley, Matt Gillette, Alex Macri andTyler Ranft were named to the LVIAC Cross CountryAll-Stars. Matt Gillette was named District XIChampion and took 19th place at the PIAA state competition.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALLThe girls won the East/West Challenge at StateCollege and finished 5th in the Garden StateChallenge, losing in the playoffs to #21 nationallyranked Mercy Academy. This team qualified for districts earlier than any other team in program history,won the District XI Silver Medal, were named LVIACChampions, ranked 3rd in the Pennsylvania Coachespoll, and were undefeated at home. Deanna Stinnerand Breanna Mazalewski were selected for District XIand LVIAC First team.

BOYS SOCCERThe boys’ soccer team rebounded from a 5-4-1 start togo unbeaten in the next 11 games of the season culminating with a 1-0 overtime win against Freedom to

capture the team’s second consecutiveDistrict XI AAA Championship. BryanKnouse, the league’s leading scorer, andRyan Wetherhold were selected to theLVIAC All-Star Team and goalkeeperGarrett Bleiler was named HonorableMention. The team finished 15-5-2 afterfalling to Lower Merion (ranked #8 nationally) in the PIAA playoffs.

FOOTBALLLVIAC All-Stars Defense team members included: Nick Deluca – Lineman, 1st Team;Clint Miller – Lineman, Honorable Mention; Darryl Herod – Linebacker, 1st Team;

Jaleel Clark – Secondary, 1st Team and Casey Cooperman – Punter, Honorable Mention.

LVIAC All-Stars Offense team members included:Jaleel Clark – Wide Receiver, 1st Team; Ian Tomcho – Guard, Honorable Mention and Travis Guth – Placekicker, Honorable Mention. Jaleel Clark was also selected to participate in the Big 33 Football All-Star game pitting the best ofPennsylvania against the best of Ohio.

FIELD HOCKEYThe Pennsylvania Field Hockey Coaches Associationannounced the following All-State selections. JacqueGerrick received 2nd Team All-State and KyleDeSandes-Moyer, Stephanie Goldberg, and KaylaMueller received Honorable Mention All-State. In addition, Kyle DeSandes-Moyer, Karie Vassallo, andArialle Hess received the honor of All-State Academic.

CHEERLEADINGThe Cheerleading squad finished 2nd at the District XICheerleading competition. The stunt team consistingof seniors Kayla Persichetti, Lauren Sniscak, CaseyFennell, Ashley Glick, and Paige McFarlandalso took 2nd place.

BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALLThe Boys’ Basketball seasoncame to an end at Villanova witha loss to York in the state quarterfinals. The Trojanscapped a 26-4 season highlighted by their two statetournament wins and District XIChampionship. The Girls’Basketball team battled throughadversity during the year, but stillmanaged a winning record at 14-10. The team’s season endedin the District XI playoffs.Sequeena Thomas and JaleelClark made Third Team All-Statein Basketball.

BOYS AND GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVINGThe teams completed their season with the state championships at Bucknell University. The LadyTrojans won the District XI Championship and finished5th overall in the state. Jaime Malandra won gold inthe 200 freestyle and silver in the 500 freestyle. CaitlinZajko placed sixth in the 200 individual medley and fifthin the 100 backstroke. Freshman Erica Reifinger wasfifth in the 500 freestyle. The 400 freestyle relay teamtook eighth place. Erika Bilenki placed fifth in the div-ing competition. The Parkland Boys finished runner-upin the District and wound up 17th of 55 teams in thestate tournament. Demitri Karedis placed 6th in the100 freestyle.

SOFTBALLThe softball team won the LVIAC championship, placed2nd in District XI playoffs and went on to become thePIAA 4A State Champions and was named MorningCall Team of the Year. Individual softball honors wentto Deanna Stinner (Morning Call Player of the Year,LVIAC MVP, All State, Parkland Hall of Fame); MelissaCatone, Kyle DeSandis-Moyer and Kelly Muth (AllLVIAC). Coach Glen Ray retired at the end of the season after coaching for 23 years.

TENNISBoys’ tennis won the LVIAC team championship.Individuals from the tennis team who excelled wereJordan Silberg (LVIAC Top Male Scholar Athlete, AllLVIAC) and Andrew Schwepfinger (Morning Call Playerof the Year, All LVIAC and District XI.)

TRACK AND FIELDBoys’ track won the LVIAC Championship. At States,male athlete Andre Williams won the 5th Place PIAAmedal in the 100 Meter Dash. He also won 5th in the110 Meter Hurdles. Matt Gillette was a 4th Place PIAAMedal Winner in the 3200 Meter Run. FemaleSequeena Thomas was the 4th Place PIAA Medal

Winner in the Triple Jump.

LACROSSEIn its inaugural varsity season, boys’lacrosse finished with a District XI silver medal and three All LVIAC performers: Allen Nist, Curtis Kaunasand Patrick Clause.

SOCCERRounding out the spring sports awards were membersof the girls’ soccer team, Tara Huber (All State, All Area,All LVIAC) and Emily Schneider (All LVIAC). Both girlsmoved into the top 10 in all-time scoring at PHS.

He also won the Yes I Can Award!from the Council for Exceptional Children – a nationalaward given to him in Seattle. This fourteen-year-oldwas diagnosed with leukemia in 2000 and began anaggressive treatment regiment to combat the cancer.After his own hospital experience, he realized therooms were not kid-friendly, so he went door-to-doorand raised money to purchase play station video gamemachines for other children undergoing similarintensive hospital stays. Despite relapsing andsuffering from new illnesses, Zachary still manages tothink of others first by organizing many fundraisers andthrough community service work. Dent discussed what it is like to campaign, details about hisjob in Washington, and how he hopes to take care ofcommunity members in his district during his role asCongressman.

NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDKristen McCarty, 7th grader at OMS won a distinguished Silver Medal from The Scholastic Alliance

for Young Artists and Writers. Nearly80,000 students submitted more than140,000 works of art and writing to 81regional programs. The top regionalartworks, approximately 8,000, receivedGold Keys and were automaticallyentered into national judging. Kristen’spaper lantern was one of only 500individual works of art that received anational award and she was honored at aceremony at Carnegie Hall, New York City.

OMS MS READ-A-THON

7th graders at OMSparticipated in theMultiple SclerosisRead-a-thon in October.$962 was raised byreading a total of 90books. The top readerwas Kristen Wiedemannand the top fundraiserwas Zach Bartman.

OMS CASUAL DAYSCasual days at OMS raised $4,318 that was used for various charitable donations and families in needthroughout the year.

OMS FRIGHT DAYTeachers and staffdressed up on Halloweenand used penny jars in thecafeteria to get students tovote for their favorite costume. The jar with themost cash won the contestand all of the money was donated to charity. This year, OMS Fright Dayraised $612.15 for theAmerican Cancer Society.A neighborhood dog wholives near OMS is alwaysa top winner.

SMS STUDENT COUNCILSpringhouse Student Council collected toys for LehighCounty’s Children and Youth Services. Their teacheradvisor is Karen Guellich. The members of studentcouncil also became holiday angels to 10 childrenthrough the Salvation Army by fulfilling holiday wisheswith gift deliveries.

HOLIDAY STAFF DONATIONThe OMS and SMS staff held a jewelry collection duringthe holidays. The schools were able to donate 30 pins, 4watches, 35 bracelets, 67 necklaces, 87 pairs of earrings,9 rings and 15 pendants to Perfect Fit for WorkingWomen. Their generosity will help low income women asthey enter the workforce. The drive was coordinated bySpeech/Language Pathologist Peggy Goll.

Cetronia students celebratedWorld Autism Awareness Day byholding a penny war that raisedmoney for Autism Speaks.Puzzle piece pins and a basketraffle also took place to raiseawareness for autism.

EXXON/MOBIL GRANT

Cetronia Elementary School received a $500 grant from theExxon/Mobil Educational Alliance program tosupport a school program. Tami Frank, manager of Top Star Inc., worked with schoolofficials to secure the grant which is one of4,000 available to schools across the countryserved by Exxon or Mobil stations. The Cetronia student body participated in the Morning Call’s AngelCampaign by collecting personal care items and snacks for theelderly who are homebound and receive services from HomemakerHealth Aide.

On February 6th, Fogelsville StudentCouncil celebrated GO RED DAY insupport of the American HeartAssociation by wearing red. Staff donated $5 each and StudentGovernment donated $1 to the Heart Association for every studentwho wore red. The result was a $748 donation!

THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW…Doug Seip received an award from Representative Doug Reichleyat Fogelsville Elementary School where his fifth grade teacher, Ms.Christie Nolan, encouraged her class to submit entries to Reichley’s

“There Ought to Be a Law” contest. Doug’s essaywas chosen as the first place essay out of 391entries from school districts throughout theregion. His law suggestion was to make itmandatory for careless drivers to adorn a caution sticker on theircar when they reach a certain number of driving tickets for illegalbehavior behind the wheel. As part of his award, Doug Seipproposed the bill at a House session in Harrisburg. RepresentativeReichley also spent time teaching Doug’s fellow 5th grade studentshow a bill becomes a law and passed out certificates ofachievement to the entire class. PSSA PEP RALLY

Fogelsville StudentGovernment sponsored aPSSA Pep Rally in the schoolgym to get students excitedabout and ready for the PSSAtests. Kim Trumbauer is theStudent Government advisor and teacher at the school.

MULTIPLICATION TOURNAMENT

Fogelsville’s Third Grade held their 10th Annual Multiplication TravelTournament whereby five representatives from each of four classescompeted against the clock to see who could travel the farthest.Each student had to beat their neighbor at a flashed fact in order tomove ahead. At the end of the timed session, Nishant Chitlurufrom Mrs. Zellner’s class was in first place, Andrea Maghacot fromMiss Richard’s class placed second, and Aryaman Khandelwal fromMrs. Lehman’s class finished third.

MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL

Fogelsville held a Multicultural Festival in June. Food, games,crafts, and performances representing the many cultures that makeup the Fogelsville Community were enjoyed by all who attended.

EARTH DAY

Teacher Judy Kelly helped to organizeevery student in the school to decorate agrocery bag from Giant or Redner’s inTrexlertown with Earth Day slogans andpictures. She took the bags back to thegrocery stores and they used them for shoppers on Earth Day.

HOLIDAY DONATION

In addition to collecting money through the Fogelsville Angel Fundto brighten a needy family’s holiday, the Fogelsville studentgovernment, under the supervision of Christie Nolan and KimTrumbauer, collected hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves for needychildren in the community. Partner school Donegan ElementarySchool in Bethlehem was the recipient of many items.

IRONTONELEMENTARY SCHOOL

RACE FOR EDUCATION/NEW WALKING TRAIL

In 2009, the Ironton PTO, staff, andstudents celebrated the opening of a newwalking trail. Once open, students ingrades K-5 spent one hour walking lapsaround their new walking trail as part of aPTO fundraiser called THE RACE FOREDUCATION. Last year’s fundraiser raised $30,000 for the PTOwhich in turn installed the walking trail, DVD players in allclassrooms, and purchased part of a new playground program.

CAPS FOR KIDS

Ironton Elementary studentsraised $517 for CAPS FOR KIDSin honor of a 4th grade studentthere who was terminally ill withthe goal of getting a signedRavens cap by his favorite player,Willis McGahee. Pictured is Mrs.

PI DAY

Ironton students participated in various mathactivities that related to the number Pi (3.14).Those who memorized the most numbers inPi got to “pie” their teachers and PrincipalSmith in the face with cream pies.

The Ironton PTO, students and staff donated gifts to benefit theBoys and Girls Club of Allentown during the holidays. The gifts weredisplayed below a tree in the lobby that was decorated by Irontonstudents’ hand-made ornaments. A student from each grade helpedload the Club’s truck with holiday gifts.

COMPUTER FAIR

Area elementary schools submitted a total of 22 projects in 4categories (Desktop Publishing, Logo Design, Digital Movie, andMultimedia) for the Elementary Computer Fair. Ironton won a 1st

place award for their Digital Movie and Multimedia projects. Mrs.Bell’s 5th grade students did a PowerPoint on the solar system.

TURKEY TROT

Ironton celebrated fitness with aTurkey Trot event that challengedstudents to improve their timeduring a mile run after severalweeks of training during gym class.

DRAMA CLUB

Ironton started a new Drama Club this year and performed TheWizard of Oz for the community in June. The club was led byteacher Megan Barry.

Samantha Saffron, Abigail Kern, Megan Cara and Tyra Burton wereSongfest participants this past year.

WAX MUSEUM

Fourth grade students inChanin Yeahl’s classresearched famous peopleby writing a biography ontheir famous person andpreparing costumes,scenery, and props toshowcase the life of that person. The students then dressed incostumes and posed as a wax model of their person to present a“wax museum” to their Kernsville classmates.

VETS DAY PROGRAM

On November 7, 2008, Parkland School District welcomed community veterans to Kernsville Elementary School witha special Veterans Day luncheon and tour. A community-wide program that honored theveterans ended the VetsDay program which hasbecome a tradition atKernsville. ParklandElementary studentshonored veterans withsongs, poetry and individual sentiments during the program. Theprogram was organized by Chris Hankee, first grade teacher of theschool, along with help from Erich Joella, music teacher.

HARLEM WIZARDS EVENT

A favorite event, the PTO once againsponsored a Kernsville Staff vs. HarlemWizards game at the Parkland HighSchool gym for families to enjoy. Morethan $6,000 was generated for thePTO by this hugely successful fundraiser.

YOUNG WRITER

Dana Emswiler, a fourth grade student at Kernsville, wonthe grand prize for 4th & 5th grade Penn State/LehighValley Writing Project. Her essay is about what shewould do if she was in charge of the world and can beviewed on the district’s web site at www.parklandsd.org.She is a student in Joan Krem’s class.

FINE ARTS WEEK

Students in all grades participated in the tradition of Kernsville’sFine Arts Week by creating art projects and viewing all types of artsperformances that were organized by the school’s PTO.

HOLIDAY DONATION

The Random Acts of KindnessClub held a holiday gift drive donation for needy families.A favorite tradition, the clubalso decorates the boxes thatthe gifts are delivered in.

KRATZERELEMENTARY SCHOOL

WALKATHON

Kratzer’s first AnnualCommunity Walk-a-thon was a hugesuccess. Students andfamilies walked,participated in yoga,karate, and healthy livingdemonstrations. Nearly$2,000 was collected and was donated to the American Society forthe Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTMENT

Several stations were set upthroughout the school so that the5th graders could witness a CivilWar Re-enactment. The stationsdepicted the life of a Civil Warsoldier as well as what life was likefor the women and children whostayed home and worked aslaborers when the men were sent to fight. Fashion and etiquette ofthe time period was also showcased.

PARKWAY MANORELEMENTARY SCHOOL

EXXON/MOBIL GRANT

Parkway Manor Elementary Schoolreceived a $500 grant from theExxon/Mobil Educational Alliance programto support a school program. Tami Frank,manager of Top Star Inc., worked withschool officials to secure the grant whichis one of 4,000 available to schoolsacross the country served by Exxon or

THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW…State Representative Doug Reichly presented an award to 5thgrader, Natalie Trachtman, in the school cafeteria. She was arunner-up after 19 other schools submitted essays about laws thatthey felt should be introduced to the House. She was in WendyDiPasquale’s class.

WALKATHON/CARING PLACE CHECK PRESENTATION

The Parkway Manor PTO presented a “big” checkat the last day of school assembly to the directorof The Caring Place in Allentown. The schoolraised $1,260 during a walkathon for The CaringPlace, a youth development center that reachesout to youths in the inner city who may be injeopardy of being entangled in the everyday life ofdrugs, violence, unemployment and hopelessnessby providing programs and activities designed toenable young people to overcome the pressures anddisadvantages of their environment.

PEN PALS IN AFGHANISTAN

Mr. Fedorak’s and Mrs. DiPasquale’s fifth grade classes at ParkwayManor started a letter writing campaign with soldiers in Afghanistan.

After receiving severalcorrespondencesback, a fifth graderhad an idea to sendthe troop a carepackage in addition tothe letters. The classes collectedneeded items from a

wish list such as, books, DVDs, games, magazines, blankets,towels, and food. This activity contained both aspects of writingand good citizenship.

The following fifth graders had poems published in the 2008 YOUNG AMERICAN POETRY DIGEST: MADISON Oliver’s “Poetry,”Sophia Beese’s “Speck,” Anushka Madwesh’s “What A GloomyDay,” and Douglas Trachtman’s “Poem by Douglas Trachtman.”

COPS N KIDS BOOK DONATION FOR SHERIDAN

Students from Parkway Manor purchased new books for all 700Sheridan Elementary (Allentown) students during a holidayfundraising drive arranged by Parkway Manor Student Council andthe Cops N Kids organization. Assemblies at Sheridan Elementary introduced Parkway Manor student ambassadors to the student body before a book distribution that also allowed Parklandstudents to visit with some new friends in Sheridan’s classrooms.

SCIENCE & INVENTION FAIR

Every year, the PTO at Parkway Manorsponsors a Science Fair thatencourages exploration and projectsand celebrates the world of science.

EARTH DAY PARADE

Students and staff celebratedEarth Day with a parade.Classes held signs stating whatthey had learned aboutpreserving the earth and theschool celebrated with adrumming and educationalassembly.

VOLLEYBALL FOR A CAUSE

Schnecksville staff took on the parents in a volleyball match toraise money for Down Syndrome research. SchnecksvilleElementary’s fundraising efforts throughout the month of Apriltotaled $2,876.14 and benefited the Eastern PA DownSyndrome Center and the Down Syndrome Research andTreatment Foundation.

ANGEL 34/ST. JUDE’S DONATIONS

The Schnecksville Student Council raised $942 through aValentine sale for two organizations that deal with childhood illnesses: St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and Angel34, a local organization that helps provide ICEE machines tohospitals, aid children and families financially, providescholarships and help with the continuing search for a cure.Doug Sheriff from Angel 34 accepted their donation in personand brought his therapy dog, Hope, to Schnecksville for thestudents to meet.

APPLE CRUNCH DAY

Sponsored by the PennsylvaniaAdvocates for Nutrition and Activity,Apple Crunch Day is designed toencourage youth, families, schoolsand communities to make the apple,and other fruits and vegetables, aregular part of a nutritious diet, with an emphasis on snacking.To celebrate, Schnecksville passed out apples to all students,taught lessons about various kinds of apples grown inPennsylvania, and enjoyed teacher Mr. O’Brien, who dressed upas an apple.

SCHNECKSVILLE TURKEY TROT

Parents stood by to encourage the 4thand 5th grade students atSchnecksville who trained in Phys Edclass to run one mile. The Turkey Trotcelebrated improvements in runningtimes as children enjoyed a

competitive race just before Thanksgiving.

STOCKING STUFFERS DONATION TO CLEVELAND ELEMENTARY

Schnecksville Elementary students gathered stocking stuffers tobenefit children at Cleveland Elementary School in Allentown.Members of the PTO, Schnecksville’s principal, mascot and agroup of students made the delivery during a ClevelandElementary assembly. This project was designed to create aconnection with the neighboring school who has already beencommunicating as pen pals with Schnecksville students.

ALEX’S LEMONADE STAND

Schnecksville Elementary School’s Community OutreachCommittee held an Alex’s Lemonade Stand benefit. Alex’smom, Liz Scott, visited Schnecksville and read the book thatAlex wrote which is all about the Lemonade Stand Effort. The whole school gathered in the gym to listen to the inspiringtale and ask questions about her daughter. Student Council, ledby Mrs. Cathy Sweeney together with fundraiser ChairwomanJoyce Smith, held a lemonade stand in the cafeteria during alllunch periods. They collected $414.38. A Lemonade Stand wasalso set up during the PTO’s Spring Carnival bringing in another$305. The PTO decided to dedicate a portion of the carnival proceeds to Alex’s Lemonade Stand with a donation of $280.62for a grand total of a $1,000 donation to Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

ELEMENTARY ALL STAR BAND AND ORCHESTRA

Parkland School District participated in the Pennsylvania MusicEducator Association’s Annual District 10 Elementary Band andOrchestra Festival in April. Two hundred students representingLehigh, Northampton, Monroe and Pike counties came togetherto present a concert for the public. Chosen for this honor areband and string members pictured below.

PARKLAND STUDENTS AND STAFF RAISED MORE THAN $4000in a raffle basket campaign to raise money for ZachKraus and his family to attend a national awardceremony in Seattle in April. Zach, an 8th gradestudent struggling to overcome cancer, who gives backto his community in many wonderful ways, won aCommunity Service “Yes I Can! Award” from theCouncil for Exceptional Children. The campaign wascoordinated by Zach’s Orefield Middle School teachersStephanie Shirk and Brian Fulmer.

The 3rd Annual District-wide food drive was held thispast spring resulting in an 8,400 POUND FOOD DONATION ANDA CASH DONATION THAT EXCEEDED $1800 FOR SECOND HARVESTFOOD BANK. Remembering that every $1 donated toSecond Harvest provides 15 pounds of food, Parkland’sdonation equated to a grand total of more than 35,000pounds of food! Selected students from every buildinghelped load the large donation onto Second HarvestFood Trucks and toured the food bank, learning howthe organization operates as well as the hunger thatexists in the Lehigh Valley and Northeast PA.

SCHOOL BOARD AWARD:Tom Gentzel, Executive Director ofthe Pennsylvania School BoardsAssociation, presented RobertaMarcus, Parkland School BoardDirector, with the PSBA Master SchoolBoard Member Award. This newlydeveloped award program recognizesindividual board members who have

demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in attainingthe goals of effective governance and meeting theneeds of students for the 21st century througheducational excellence and equity of all students.A panel of PSBA past presidents reviewed theanonymous applications to evaluate compliance withthe requirements for accreditation. Only 9 schoolboard members from across the state of Pennsylvaniareceived the prestigious award. Roberta Marcus iscurrently president-elect of the state-wide PSBAorganization.
